Selected strains of ectomycorrhizal fungi, such as the basidiomycete Laccaria bicolor , are currently being used as inoculants in nurseries to improve growth of forest trees after outplanting. Information is needed on the survival of these introduced strains in forests and their impact on indigenous biodiversity. Dissemination and persistence of an American strain, L. bicolor S238N, were studied 10 years after outplanting in a Douglas fir plantation located at Saint-Brisson (Morvan, France). About 430 Laccaria spp. sporophores were collected over 3 years. Inheritance of nuclear ribosomal DNA, as well as RAPD markers, was characterized in L. bicolor S238N, using a haploid progeny set of 91 monokaryons. More than 50 markers were identified (19 heterozygous and 33 homozygous or cytoplasmic markers), which unambiguously confirmed that the introduced strain was still present in the inoculated plots. Neither selfing ( P < 0.0008) nor introgression with indigenous strains was detected although in vitro interfertility between the American strain and indigenous L. bicolor was identified. No ingress of the introduced genet into adjacent uninoculated plots colonized by various local Laccaria genets was detected. It is proposed that the spatial distributions identified have developed through mycelial propagation of the introduced strain and intraspecific competition with native genets. Although longer-term data is still lacking, the stability of the inoculant strain and the limited disturbance to indigenous populations described support large-scale nursery production of this host-fungal combination. 相似文献

1. Since zebra mussel invaded Lake Constance in the 1960s the number of wintering waterbirds increased fourfold. We studied the impact of predation by waterbirds (tufted duck Aythya fuligula, pochard Aythya ferina and coot Fulica atra) on the population of Dreissena polymorpha in winter 2001/2002. These three species, with monthly peak numbers of approximately 230 000 individuals, currently comprise up to 80% of the waterbird population wintering at Lake Constance. 2. Four different study sites and four depths, that represent typical and characteristic habitats of mussels in Upper Lake Constance, were chosen. 3. Zebra mussels were sampled before, during and after predation by waterbirds. Their biomass in shallow areas decreased by >90%; the biomass reduction in deeper areas was highly variable and dependent on the substratum. With one exception, no changes could be detected at the greatest depth (11 m). 4. Concurrent exclosure studies revealed that the decrease in zebra mussels was caused by waterbird predation. A GIS‐based approximation revealed that in an area of 1 km2 a total of approximately 750 t mussel fresh mass was removed by birds, which is equivalent to 1390 g mussels per bird per day. 5. Photosynthetic electron transport and low-temperature fluorescence emission properties have been analyzed in isolated chloroplasts during the course of frost hardening and dehardening of Pinus silvestris L. Both the partial electron-transport reactions (H2O DPIP and Asc./DPIP NADP) and the overall electron transport (H2O — NAPD) showed decreasing capacities during the course of hardening. Upon exposing the plants to ?5°C and high irradiance a block in the electron-transport chain between the two photosystems developed, whereas the partial reactions still showed activities. The decrease in activity of PSl was accompanied by a decrease in P700 content, as determined by light oxidation of P700, which indicates a correlation between the two changes. Hardening also induced changes in the in vivo chlorophyll organization. During the course of hardening the fluorescence emission bands F692 and F726 decreased relative to F680. These changes were more pronounced if the plants were treated in high than in low irradiance. This suggests a greater destruction of the chlorophyll antennae in close association with the two photoreactions than in the so-called light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b antenna. During dehardening basically the reverse of the changes observed during hardening occurred. The recovery of secondary needles was complete, whereas primary needles only partly recovered. 相似文献

Populations of the turret spider Atypoides riversi from eight central Californian sites were compared based on variation at ten allozyme loci. Multidimensional scaling of interpopulation genetic distances defined four population units (Coast Range, Sierran, Valley, Jenness Camp), corroborating the distinctness of Coast Range and Sierran populations indicated by a prior study. While the species status of these units has yet to be determined, Jenness Camp is the most likely to represent a new species, given its clear genetic uniqueness (two fixed allelic differences). Populations in all units were generally in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium with no evidence of inbreeding, though variability was minimal (mean H o = 2.8%, mean P = 15.4%). Reduced variability in these populations may be the result of repeated bottlenecks, environmental homogeneity, and/or directional selection. Interpopulation differentiation within units was significant in the absence of intervening forest habitat and was substantially less in its presence, indicating that gene flow is likely only when forest corridors exist. To foster preservation of the existing gene pool and enhance participation in it, management of the units of At. riversi should focus on maintaining as many populations in situ as possible and facilitating connections between them, while also creating or restoring habitat for potential colonization. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 27–37. 相似文献

Arctic seas have warmed and sea ice has retreated. This has resulted in range contraction and population declines in some species, but it could potentially be a boon for others. Great Cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo have a partially wettable plumage and seem poorly suited to foraging in Arctic waters. We show that rates of population change of Cormorant colonies around Disko Bay, Greenland, are positively correlated with sea surface temperature, suggesting that they may benefit from a warming Arctic. However, although Cormorant populations may increase in response to Arctic warming, the extent of expansion of their winter range may ultimately be limited by other factors, such as sensory constraints on foraging behaviour during long Arctic nights. 相似文献

SUMMARY.
- 1 Two species of predatory caddisfly larvae—Rhyacophila fuscula (Walker) and R. melita Ross—have overlapping longitudinal distributions in southern Ontario streams.
- 2 The populations were studied at sites in areas of overlap (sympatry) and allopatry to determine what resources were partitioned, and if partitioning varied in the zones of overlap.
- 3 Life cycle and species size variation resulted in substantial physical differences between these univoltine species for most months of the year.
- 4 In May, when larvae of both species were not significantly different in size, a detailed microhabitat field study found no difference in microhabitat use between allopatric populations of R. fuscula and R. melita. Microhabitat selection by R. fuscula remained constant at sympatric sites but R. melita showed a significant change resulting in reduced microhabitat overlap with R. fuscula.
