Parasites induce phenotypic modifications in their hosts, which can compromise host fitness. For example, the parasitic fly Philornis downsi , which was recently introduced to the Galápagos Islands, causes severe naris and beak malformation in Darwin's finches. The fly larvae feed on tissues from the nares of developing finch nestlings, thereby altering the size and shape of the nares and beak. Although the parasitism is age-specific (adult finches are not parasitized), naris and beak malformations persist into adulthood as parasite-induced malformations. We systematically examined adult populations of Darwin's small ground finch, Geospiza fuliginosa , on the islands of Santa Cruz for P. downsi -induced malformation. We found that malformed birds had significantly longer nares, and shorter, shallower beaks, than birds considered to be normal (i.e. with no nares or beak malformation). In addition, normal birds showed an isometry between naris length and beak dimensions (beak length feather and beak depth), which was not found in malformed birds. These differences suggest that beak morphology was influenced by P. downsi parasitism. Interestingly, we did not find any evidence of developmental impairment (smaller body size) or reduced foraging efficiency (lower body condition) between normal and malformed birds. Our findings of P. downsi -induced malformation raise new questions about the evolutionary trajectory and conservation status for this group of birds.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 577–585.  相似文献

Predation can promote divergence between prey populations and contribute to ecological speciation. In theory, predators can also constrain prey population divergence. In coastal British Columbia, Canada, Gasterosteus aculeatus (three‐spined stickleback) species pairs only occur in lakes with a single species of predatory fish: Oncorhynchus clarkii (the cutthroat trout). Similar lakes containing additional predatory fish species (Cottus asper, prickly sculpins; Oncorhynchus mykiss, rainbow trout) contain only single species of morphologically intermediate stickleback, suggesting that these predators prevent the coexistence of stickleback species pairs. We conducted a mesocosm experiment to investigate how prickly sculpins might constrain divergence, by quantifying their impact on survival and natural selection on antipredator (armour) traits in F2 stickleback from a cross between ecologically divergent populations. We tested three hypotheses: (1) sculpin predation on sticklebacks reduces survival in a way that could result in their exclusion from certain niches; (2) sculpins compete with stickleback; (3) sculpins respond to prey vulnerabilities in similar ways to cutthroat trout, tending to constrain rather than to enhance divergence. We found that sculpins significantly reduce stickleback survival, that their presence per se does not reduce growth in stickleback, and that predation did not result in selection on any of the armour traits measured, or on gill raker length, which is an important trophic trait. These results tend to refute hypotheses (2) and (3), while supporting hypothesis (1). © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 104 , 877–885.  相似文献

A revision of the three endemic Iberian species of Succisella G. Beck ( S. carvalhoana , S. microcephala and S. andreae-molinae ), based on herbarium studies, SEM photographs and field observations, is presented utilizing morphological, palynological, karyological, biogeographical and ecological characters. The distribution of the species in the Iberian Peninsula is shown in a grid map. Full synonymy is given for all taxa.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 144 , 351–364.  相似文献

The function of the excretory system of the teredinid bivalveNausitora fusticula is discussed on the basis of new informationon histology and ultrastructure. The wall of the auricles islined with podocytes that allow haemolymph ultrafiltration tothe pericardial cavity. These podocytes also show apical microvilliwith absorptive activity. The primary urine is drained fromthe pericardial cavity to the afferent ducts by a citiated bulb-likestructure. Theafferent and efferent ducts together form thekidney body. The afferent duct shows structures related to absorption, excretion and conduction of the urine. The efferent ducts, however, have structures concerned only with urine absorption and conduction. Conditions for plant regeneration from explants of tomato (Lycopersiconesculentum) cv. UC82B were studied for optimizing transformationprocedure. The best regeneration rate was obtained from cotyledonexplants from 8–10-d-old seedlings on a modified Murashigeand Skoog medium (1962) with 0·5 mg dm–3 zeatinand 0·5 mg dm–3 indolylacetic acid. Tomato cultivars(UC82B, Castone, Fl Ferline, Monalbo) and a Lycopersicon peruvkmum‘CMV sel. INRA’ were studied. The cultivarUC82Band the wild Lycopersicon species showed an efficient shootregeneration potential. Early events in the transformation of tomato cotyledons wereanalysed using an Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain carryinga binary vector with an nptII (pnos) gene and a reporter GUS-intron(p35S) chimeric gene. Two days after infection, GUS activityappeared specifically at the cut surface. Subepidermal cellswere more susceptible to transformation than epidermal cells. When selection for kanamycin resistance was applied 2 d afterinoculation, transformed cells were efficiently recovered. Preculturewith feeder cells stimulated cell transformation, but reducedregenerationcapacity from transformed cells. The optimal transformationrate was observed witha time of preculture of 1 and 2 d. Transformationevents for two tomato cultivars (UC82B and Monalbo) occurredat the same rate as 55% of the inoculated explants developedkanamycin resistant calli. However, transformed plants wereobtained at different rates of 8% and 14% for cv. Monalbo andcv. UC82B. As atmospheric CO2 increases, ecosystem carbon sequestration will largely depend on how global changes in climate will alter the balance between net primary production and decomposition. The response of primary production to climatic change has been examined using well‐validated mechanistic models, but the same is not true for decomposition, a primary source of atmospheric CO2. We used the Long‐term Intersite Decomposition Experiment Team (LIDET) dataset and model‐selection techniques to choose and parameterize a model that describes global patterns of litter decomposition. Mass loss was best represented by a three‐pool negative exponential model, with a rapidly decomposing labile pool, an intermediate pool representing cellulose, and a recalcitrant pool. The initial litter lignin/nitrogen ratio defined the size of labile and intermediate pools. Lignin content determined the size of the recalcitrant pool. The decomposition rate of all pools was modified by climate, but the intermediate pool's decomposition rate was also controlled by relative amounts of litter cellulose and lignin (indicative of lignin‐encrusted cellulose). The effect of climate on decomposition was best represented by a composite variable that multiplied a water‐stress function by the Lloyd and Taylor variable Q10 temperature function. Although our model explained nearly 70% of the variation in LIDET data, we observed systematic deviations from model predictions. Below‐ and aboveground material decomposed at notably different rates, depending on the decomposition stage. Decomposition in certain ecosystem‐specific environmental conditions was not well represented by our model; this included roots in very wet and cold soils, and aboveground litter in N‐rich and arid sites. Despite these limitations, our model may still be extremely useful for global modeling efforts, because it accurately (R2=0.6804) described general patterns of long‐term global decomposition for a wide array of litter types, using relatively minimal climatic and litter quality data.  相似文献

A total of 215 freshly processed post-chill whole chicken carcasses were assessed for Campylobacter spp. contamination by a fluorescence concentration immunoassay (FCIA) procedure. Whole chicken carcasses were sampled with low volume water rinses from which 5 ml portions were enriched with brucella enrichment broth with or without oxyrase supplement in a test tube enrichment system. After a 24h stationary incubation at 42C, each sample was assayed using a FCIA procedure for the presence or absence of campylobacters. The FCIA procedure indicated Campylobacter spp. contamination in 84% of carcasses using oxyrase supplemented enrichment, while only 47% of the chicken carcasses were positive from nonsupplemented enrichment. The corresponding incidence rates detected by culture method were 92% and 87% for oxyrase supplemented and unsupplemented samples, respectively. The FCIA procedure can be completed in less than 1 h with 48 samples including a positive and a negative control assayed on one plate. In summary, the test tube oxyrase-supplemented stationary enrichment system followed by the use of the FCIA procedure was found to be an effective, rapid method for the detection of Campylobacter spp. in chicken rinse water.  相似文献

Predation is the main cause of passerine nesting failure. Traditionally, large intraspecific group size is thought to accrue individuals with fitness benefits from increased predator vigilance and hence lower predation risk. To date, few studies have investigated interspecific group size in relation to predation risk. In the present study, we examined predation outcome in Darwin's small tree finch, Camarhynchus parvulus , in nests with many or few interspecific neighbours. We tested the predictions: (1) nests in mixed associations have lower predation than do more solitary nests; (2) mixed species nesting associations covary with nest site vegetation characteristics; (3) older (i.e. presumably experienced) males more commonly nest in mixed associations than younger males; (4) older males select more concealed nesting sites; and (5) controlling male age, females prefer to pair with males in mixed associations than at solitary nests. Almost half of all nests occurred in mixed associations (46%) compared to solitary nests (54%), and the overall distribution of nests was decidedly nonrandom, displaying a bimodal pattern. Nest site vegetation characteristics of the focal species were inconsistently associated with nesting pattern, but older males did select more concealed nesting sites. Controlling differences in surrounding vegetation characteristics, mixed nesting associations experienced markedly lower predation than solitary nests, and females showed a preference for males in mixed associations, as demonstrated by higher male pairing success.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 313–324.  相似文献

Abstract: The physiological impacts and fitness costs of parasitism by an introduced ectoparasitic fly, Philornis downsi (Muscidae), were studied in nestlings of Darwin's Small Ground Finch, Geospiza fuliginosa (Geospizinae), on the Galápagos Archipelago. Whole blood haemoglobin (Hb) concentration was used to measure host response to ectoparasitism due to its high repeatability and validity, as well as for its key role in aerobic activities that affect fitness, such as flight capacity and nestling begging intensity. Increased numbers of ectoparasitic larvae of P. downsi were strongly correlated with lower Hb levels in nestlings in the absence of blood parasites. Furthermore, immature red blood cell counts were negatively correlated with Hb level and positively correlated with P. downsi intensity. Nestlings with high levels of parasitism suffered higher mortality, which varied with clutch size. Our results provide evidence that endemic Galápagos bird populations are physiologically compromised by P. downsi and experience substantial fitness costs due to ectoparasitism.  相似文献
