Although costs of mating have been widely documented in females,intrinsic costs of copulation have been poorly documented inmales, and there is little evidence that such costs constrainmale mating success under natural conditions. Male sagebrushcrickets, Cyphoderris strepitans, offer females an unusual somaticfood gift at copulation that may constitute a significant costof copulation: females chew on the ends of the males' fleshyhind wings and ingest hemolymph seeping from the wounds theyinflict. Previous studies have shown that once a male has mated,his probability of obtaining an additional copulation is reducedrelative to that of a virgin male seeking to secure his firstmating. If the future mating prospects of nonvirgin males arediminished because of the costs of copulation, this could stemeither from the resources required to manufacture a new spermatophoreor through the energy needed to replenish hemolymph lost throughfemale wing-feeding. To distinguish between these two alternatives,we experimentally depleted virgin males of varying amounts hemolymphin a way that mimicked hemolymph loss of nonvirgin males, withoutthe attendant costs of spermatophore production. After theyhad been treated, males were released in the field and recapturedover the course of the breeding season to monitor their matingsuccess. Control males mated significantly sooner than did malesdepleted of hemolymph. We conclude, therefore, that the depletionof hemolymph that occurs through female wing feeding is sufficientby itself to diminish a nonvirgin male's ability to secure anothermating. 相似文献

Females of many species mate repeatedly throughout their lives, often with many different males (polyandry). Females can secure genetic benefits by maximizing their diversity of mating partners, and might be expected, therefore, to forego matings with previous partners in favour of novel males. Indeed, a female preference for novel mating partners has been shown in several taxa, but the mechanism by which females distinguish between novel males and previous mates remains unknown. We show that female crickets (Gryllodes sigillatus) mark males with their own unique chemical signatures during mating, enabling females to recognize prior mates in subsequent encounters and to avoid remating with them. Because self-referent chemosensory cues provide females with a simple, but reliable mechanism of identifying individuals with whom they have mated without requiring any special cognitive ability, they may be a widespread means by which females across a broad range of animal mating systems maximize the genetic benefits of polyandry. 相似文献

Abstract.— Females, by mating with more than one male in their lifetime, may reduce their risk of receiving sperm from genetically incompatible sires or increase their prospects of obtaining sperm from genetically superior sires. Although there is evidence of both kinds of genetic benefits in crickets, their relative importance remains unclear, and the extent to which experimentally manipulated levels of polyandry in the laboratory correspond to those that occur in nature remain unknown. We measured lifetime polyandry of free-living female decorated crickets, Gryllodes sigillatus , and conducted an experiment to determine whether polyandry leads to an increase in offspring viability. We experimentally manipulated both the levels of polyandry and opportunities for females to select among males, randomly allocating the offspring of experimental females to high-food-stress or low-food-stress regimes to complete their development. Females exhibited a high degree of polyandry, mating on average with more than seven different males during their lifetime and up to as many as 15. Polyandry had no effect on either the developmental time or survival of offspring. However, polyandrous females produced significantly heavier sons than those of monandrous females, although there was no difference in the adult mass of daughters. There was no significant interaction between mating treatment and offspring nutritional regimen in their effects on offspring mass, suggesting that benefits accruing to female polyandry are independent of the environment in which offspring develop. The sex difference in the extent to which male and female offspring benefit via their mother's polyandry may reflect possible differences in the fitness returns from sons and daughters. The larger mass gain shown by sons of polyandrous females probably leads to their increased reproductive success, either because of their increased success in sperm competition or because of their increased life span. 相似文献

A challenging topic in cancer research is to create drug delivery system that can bring in a specific and noncytotoxic manner
a therapeutic compound. Usually, tumor targeting requires very specific compounds. Currently, peptide analogues like somatostatin,
neurotensin, or bombesin are used to target G-coupled receptors, which are overexpressed on tumor cells. However, many of
those analogues are rapidly degraded in the plasma and are cytotoxic [1–2]. Due to the limited efficiency and high toxicity
of conventional chemotherapy different strategies have been developed for non-cytotoxic cancer treatment and cancer localization
[3–5].
The recent development in bio-nanotechnology offers new avenues for cancer therapy. A lot of studies have been devoted to
nanoparticulate delivery systems (10–100nm) like lipid or polymer particles [6–8]. Due to the nanometer sized of such cargos,
the transportation of therapeutic compounds in the blood stream is increased in terms of time circulation. But their surface
functionalization to improve drug-targeting properties is usually complicated and rather uneffective.
We have recently designed a novel type of functional nanoparticles with regular icosahedral symmetry, mimicking small, rigid

The terminal investment hypothesis proposes that decreased expectation of future reproduction (e.g., arising from a threat to survival) should precipitate increased investment in current reproduction. The level at which a cue of decreased survival is sufficient to trigger terminal investment (i.e., the terminal investment threshold) may vary according to other factors that influence expectation for future reproduction. We test whether the terminal investment threshold varies with age in male crickets, using heat‐killed bacteria to simulate an immune‐inducing infection. We measured calling effort (a behavior essential for mating) and hemolymph antimicrobial activity in young and old males across a gradient of increasing infection cue intensity. There was a significant interaction between the infection cue and age in their effect on calling effort, confirming the existence of a dynamic terminal investment threshold: young males reduced effort at all infection levels, whereas old males increased effort at the highest levels relative to naïve individuals. A lack of a corresponding decrease in antibacterial activity suggests that altered reproductive effort is not traded against investment in this component of immunity. Collectively, these results support the existence of a dynamic terminal investment threshold, perhaps accounting for some of the conflicting evidence in support of terminal investment. 相似文献

While a number of studies have measured multivariate sexual selection acting on sexual signals in wild populations, few have confirmed these findings with experimental manipulation. Sagebrush crickets are ideally suited to such investigations because mating imposes an unambiguous phenotypic marker on males arising from nuptial feeding by females. We quantified sexual selection operating on male song by recording songs of virgin and mated males captured from three wild populations. To determine the extent to which selection on male song is influenced by female preference, we conducted a companion study in which we synthesized male songs and broadcast them to females in choice trials. Multivariate selection analysis revealed a saddle‐shaped fitness surface, the highest peak of which corresponded to longer train and pulse durations, and longer intertrain intervals. Longer trains and pulses likely promote greater mate attraction, but selection for longer intertrain durations suggests that energetic constraints may necessitate “time outs”. Playback trials confirmed the selection for longer train and pulse durations, and revealed significant stabilizing selection on dominant frequency, suggesting that the female auditory system is tightly tuned to the species‐specific call frequency. Collectively, our results revealed a complex pattern of multivariate nonlinear selection characterized primarily by strong stabilizing and disruptive selection on male song traits. 相似文献

The condition dependence of male sexual traits plays a central role in sexual selection theory. Relatively little, however, is known about the condition dependence of chemical signals used in mate choice and their subsequent effects on male mating success. Furthermore, few studies have isolated the specific nutrients responsible for condition‐dependent variation in male sexual traits. Here, we used nutritional geometry to determine the effect of protein (P) and carbohydrate (C) intake on male cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) expression and mating success in male decorated crickets (Gryllodes sigillatus). We show that both traits are maximized at a moderate‐to‐high intake of nutrients in a P:C ratio of 1 : 1.5. We also show that female precopulatory mate choice exerts a complex pattern of linear and quadratic sexual selection on this condition‐dependent variation in male CHC expression. Structural equation modelling revealed that although the effect of nutrient intake on mating success is mediated through condition‐dependent CHC expression, it is not exclusively so, suggesting that other traits must also play an important role. Collectively, our results suggest that the complex interplay between nutrient intake, CHC expression and mating success plays an important role in the operation of sexual selection in G. sigillatus. 相似文献

Mycobacterium ulcerans produces a macrolide exotoxin, mycolactone which suppresses immune cells activity, is toxic to most cells and the key virulence factor in the pathogenesis of Buruli ulcer disease. Mycolactone is reported to mediate the production of reactive oxygen species in keratinocytes; cells that play critical role in wound healing. Increased levels of reactive oxygen species have been shown to disrupt the well-ordered process of wound repair; hence, the function of wound-healing cells such as macrophages, keratinocytes, and fibroblast could be impaired in the presence of the reactive oxygen species mediator, mycolactone. To ensure regeneration of tissues in chronic ulcers, with proper and timely healing of the wounds, natural antioxidants that can combat the effects of induced reactive oxygen species in wound-healing cells ought to be investigated. Reactive oxygen species activity was determined in mycolactone-treated RAW 264.7 macrophages and the scavenging ability of the antioxidants (ascorbic acid, gallic acid, and green tea kombucha) against mycolactone-induced reactive oxygen species (superoxide anions) was assessed using fluorescein probe (DCF-DA) and nitroblue tetrazolium dye. Cytotoxicity of the antioxidants, mycolactone, and the protective effect of the antioxidants on the cells upon treatment with mycolactone were determined using the Alamar blue assay. The expression levels of endogenous antioxidant enzyme genes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) in response to mycolactone-mediated reactive oxygen species were determined using RT-qPCR. Mycolactone induced the production of reactive oxygen species in RAW 264.7 macrophages, and the resulting superoxide anions were scavenged by some of the antioxidants. The selected endogenous antioxidant enzyme genes in the macrophages were upregulated in the presence of the antioxidants and mycolactone. The exogenously supplied ascorbic acid and green tea kombucha offered moderate protection to the macrophages against the toxicity of mycolactone. We conclude that the results provide insights into alternate and adjunct therapeutic approaches in Buruli ulcer treatment, which could significantly attenuate the toxicity of the pathogenic factor; mycolactone. 相似文献
