Allozyme electrophoresis was conducted to survey the levels and distribution of genetic diversity in the tetraploid perennial larkspur Delphinium montanum (Ranunculaceae), which is endemic to the eastern Pyrenees of Spain and France and considered to be endangered. Seven populations were sampled, resolving 14 putative enzymatic loci belonging to eight enzymes. Banding patterns stained in gels revealed several enzymatic duplications attributable to autotetraploidy, such as the presence of both balanced and unbalanced heterozygotes and the lack of fixed heterozygosity. However, variability in D. montanum ( P  = 23.8%, A  = 1.48, and H e = 0.082) was lower than that expected for an autotetraploid species. This, in addition to the scarcity of loci showing three or four different alleles, could indicate that this species has suffered genetic erosion through population bottlenecks, or, alternatively, that it is undergoing diploidization.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 155 , 211–222.  相似文献

Abstract:  Trilobites, a dominant component of marine faunas during the Cambrian and Ordovician and which survived until the end of the Permian (542–251 Ma) have been used in many macroevolutionary analyses. Here, we use a discovery curve to document the sampling history of trilobites, which we consider a proxy for Palaeozoic faunas in general. At higher taxonomic ranks, orders, suborders and superfamilies, the fossil record has been completely sampled, while the family rank also shows a high level of sampling completeness, having reached an asymptote in 1970. Importantly, this levelling-off occurred even though worker effort continued to increase. However, at genus level the sampling record is incomplete, indicating that families should not be used as a proxy for genera. There is little variation among the different subsets of generic data, with the sampling history of different stratigraphic periods and among different orders being very similar. However, there is noticeable variation among geographical regions, caused by variations in worker effort, and this could cause problems when comparing speciation and diversity patterns across faunal provinces. The role of synonyms on sampling history has had little effect.  相似文献

1. A series of laboratory-based equations on trout growth and bioenergetics developed by J.M. Elliott were applied to data collected for brown trout ( Salmo trutta L.) under field conditions in Co. Mayo, Western Ireland. Fish were collected by electrofishing eight upland streams with contrasting riparian vegetation; grassland, open canopy and closed canopy deciduous.
2. Stream temperatures, one of the main influencing factors on fish growth and energetics, did not differ significantly between riparian types.
3. Observed growth rates were lower than the predicted maximum growth rates and were not influenced by riparian vegetation type. Growth ranged between 0.66% day−1 for 0 + trout to 0.08% day−1 for 2 + trout.
4. Production estimates showed no clear difference between riparian vegetation types over the growing season.
5. Fish densities and biomass tended to be greater in closed canopy streams particularly in summer.
6. Actual ration sizes calculated for trout were similar to the ration required for maintenance metabolism and were only 45–63% of the maximum potential rations. Although there was an ontogenetic increase in ration size with increasing fish age, the proportion of ration available for growth (i.e. the difference between actual and maintenance rations) did not differ between age classes but was greatest in summer. 1+ and 2+ trout show greatest ration available for growth in grassland streams.
7. Trout growth did not differ between riparian vegetation types but did vary seasonally with greatest attainment in summer. Growth was limited in the present study possibly due to combined effects of reduced prey available to fish and low stream temperatures reducing metabolic requirements. In such food limited systems, terrestrial invertebrate energy subsidies could have significant benefits to brown trout growth, production and bioenergetics.  相似文献

Foliar oils, particularly monoterpenes, can influence the susceptibility of plants to herbivory. In plants, including eucalypts, monoterpenes are often associated with plant defence. A recent analysis revealed an increase in foliar oil content with increasing latitudinal endemism, and we tested this pattern using three eucalypt taxa comprising a latitudinal replacement cline. We also examined the relative concentrations of two monoterpenes (α‐pinene and 1,8‐cineole), for which meta‐analyses also showed latitudinal variation, using hybrids of these three taxa with Corymbia torelliana. These, and pure C. torelliana, were then assessed in common‐garden field plots for the abundance and distribution of herbivory by four distinct herbivore taxa. Differing feeding strategies among these herbivores allowed us to test hypotheses regarding heritability of susceptibility and relationships to α‐pinene and 1,8‐cineole. We found no support for an increase in foliar oil content with increasing latitude, nor did our analysis support predictions for consistent variation in α‐pinene and 1,8‐cineole contents with latitude. However, herbivore species showed differential responses to different taxa and monoterpene contents. For example, eriophyid mites, the most monophagous of our censused herbivores, avoided the pure species, but fed on hybrid taxa, supporting hypotheses on hybrid susceptibility. The most polyphagous herbivore (leaf blister sawfly Phylacteophaga froggatti) showed no evidence of response to plant secondary metabolites, while the distribution and abundance patterns of Paropsis atomaria showed some relationship to monoterpene yields.  相似文献

Two phases of an experimental reduction in management at Langholm Moor in southwest Scotland provided an insight into factors that determined trends in the abundance of moorland birds. In 1992 the historical control of breeding Hen Harriers Circus cyaneus stopped and in 2000 grouse moor management was discontinued. Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria , Lapwing Vanellus vanellus , Curlew Numenius arquata and Red Grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus declined, whilst Carrion Crow Corvus corone and Snipe Gallinago gallinago increased. Hen Harriers increased from two to 20 breeding females, then declined back to two. Lapwing abundance was positively associated with that of Hen Harriers, and moorland passerines (Skylark Alauda arvensis , Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis and Stonechat Saxicola torquata ) were negatively associated. Golden Plover, Lapwing, Curlew, Red Grouse, Skylark and Hen Harrier were more abundant when the moor was managed for grouse, whilst Carrion Crow, a common predator of clutches of ground-nesting birds, increased during the second half when management ceased. Increased Crow numbers, together with an increase in Red Foxes Vulpes vulpes , probably contributed to the observed bird declines.  相似文献

1. Microbial plankton dynamics in an ultra‐oligotrophic epishelf lake (Beaver Lake, Antarctica) were investigated over an austral summer (December 2002 to January 2003). The aim was to characterise carbon cycling in an environmentally extreme lake. 2. The lake had an unusual temperature profile with peak temperatures of 1.3–1.9 °C between 20 and 25 m. Photosynthetically active radiation penetrated to the lake bottom (110 m) on occasions. The ice cover underwent marked thinning and melting during the study period. 3. Chlorophyll a concentrations were consistently low, usually below 1 μg L?1, with highest concentrations close to the lake bottom, where the photosynthetic elements showed strong autofluorescence. Mean photosynthetic nanoflagellates ranged between 34.9 × 104 L?1 ± 33.5 (23rd December) and 130.9 × 104 L?1 ± 112.3 (4th December). Highest photosynthetic activity was usually recorded below 25 m. Rates of carbon fixation varied between 0.089 μg C L?1 h?1 ± 0.002 and 0.579 μg C L?1 h?1 ± 0.156. Primary production was limited by low temperature and orthophosphate availability. 4. Mean bacterial concentration throughout the water column ranged between 9.3 × 107 L?1 ± 1.2 (23rd December) and 14.0 × 107 L?1 ± 1.8 (28th January). Bacterial production was low, less than 10% of primary production and ranged between 2.1 ng C L?1 h?1 ± 0.8 and 12 ng C L?1 h?1 ± 0.9. Highest rates coincided with times of highest primary production. On occasion dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations dropped to 20 μg L?1, probably below accurate limits of detection, suggesting that carbon substratum and phosphorus may have limited bacterial growth. 5. Heterotrophic nanoflagellates varied significantly over the summer from a mean of 26.6 × 104 L?1 ± 14.2 (23rd December) to 133.8 × 104 L?1 ± 33.5 (14th December). They imposed a significant grazing impact on the bacterioplankton, removing in excess of 100% of bacterial production in December. 6. The total organic carbon pool [DOC and particulate organic carbon (POC)] was below 600 μg L?1. The ratio of DOC : POC ranged between 0.44 : 1 and 2.8 : 1 in the upper 40 m of the water column, and 1.8 : 1 and 3.7 : 1 in the lower waters. The microbial plankton contributed 1–29% of POC, thus detrital POC made up the largest fraction of the POC pool. 7. Beaver Lake is an extreme lacustrine ecosystem where heterotrophic processes occasionally appear to be carbon limited. Significant summer ice‐melt, not seen in a previous opportunistic sampling, may be having an impact on the carbon cycle.  相似文献
