An Arrhenius plot of the respiration rate of cucumber leavesshows a break at 12°C; below this temperature Q10 is 5.7.Leaves can survive exposure to 10°C for a week, but if chilledat 8°C for 3 d they show some loss of fresh weight and leakelectrolytes when immersed in water. 1. The predictions of the marginal value theorem, that foragers should spend more time in both better quality patches and more distant patches, were tested with three European ant species, Lasius fuliginosus , L. niger and Myrmica ruginodis.
2. As the quality of patches of sucrose solution increased, the feeding time of foraging workers of L. niger also increased.
3. At constant patch quality, feeding times of L. niger and M. ruginodis increased with increasing distance of the patch from the nest entrance.
4. Foraging workers of L. fuliginosus showed a similar response to patch distance in the field, but feeding times were also significantly influenced by air temperature, decreasing as temperature increased.

Under normal conditions of germination, there is never muchlactate in bean cotyledons, but when beans are germinated underwet conditions lactate accumulates for about 30 h and then slowlydisappears, as radicle emergence begins. Removal of the testaefrom soaked seeds prevents subsequent lactate accumulation.Lactate also appears in beans germinated under nitrogen. Lactate dehydrogenase activity is enhanced in wet or anaerobicconditions. Incubation with pyruvate increased lactate dehydrogenaseby 50 per cent. There was also a temporary accumulation of alcohol in beansgrown under wet conditions. Changes in shape and size of Robinia pulvinar cortical cellsin relation to leaflet movements have been investigated usingan image processing system applied to drawings of transverseand longitudinal pulvinar sections. Both the size and shapeof cell sections underwent change during movement. The dorsal-leftside region of the cortex has been characterized as the extensorregion which increases turgor during opening. Morphometric changesoccur throughout the cortical motor cells except in the threeor four inner layers. K, Cl, S, and Ca distribution in cellwalls and protoplasts of inner and outer motor cells have beenmeasured with X-ray microanalysis. The distribution patternof K and Cl shows that these ions are mainly responsible forturgor changes. K and Cl were simultaneously depleted in apoplastand protoplast, which suggests that cell walls do not possessa high enough ionic reservoir during Robinia leaflet movements.Ca was always higher in flexor cell walls than in extensor regionsof closed pulvini. This fact could be related to a lower abilityto extend of flexor cells which underwent fewer morphomerticchangrs during movement.  相似文献

1. Clones of Sitobion avenae from the west of France exhibited four types of responses in growth chambers to short days and low temperatures: in addition to permanently parthenogenetic clones (anholocyclic) and clones producing both males and parthenogenetic females (androcyclic), lineages producing both mating females and males were categorized into holocyclic and intermediate types, the latter investing into both sexual and parthenogenetic reproduction.
2. Holocyclic, intermediate and androcyclic clones were tested outdoors for sexual production in autumn and results were consistent with those obtained in growth chambers. Eggs from holocyclic and intermediate clone selfings were laid and hatched for most crosses.
3. Reciprocal crosses within and between life cycle variants showed no effect of the type of cross on the number of eggs laid per mating female, their hatching success, or the survival and fecundity of the parthenogenetic females born from eggs (fundatrices).
4. Eggs from intermediate × intermediate crosses hatched 20 days earlier than those involving at least one holocyclic parent. It is suggested that this short diapausing time gives a selective advantage to intermediate clones in oceanic climates, which could compensate for their lower sexual production in autumn.
5. Selfed offspring showed inbreeding depression, which seems to be common in non host-alternating aphids.
6. Mating with androcyclic males affects percentage (lower) and time (longer) of egg hatching, but not the other investigated traits.
7. The significance of intragenotypic strategy mixing in androcyclic and intermediate clones is discussed as an overall adaptation to the uncertainty of winter climate in oceanic zones.  相似文献
