Genome size variation in Tardigrada   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The genome size of tardigrades has been documented to date in seven species of eutardigrades, and it is among the lowest in invertebrates. In this paper the evaluation of genome size is extended to eight other speeies of eutardigrades and to one species of heterolardigradcs, in order to obtain a more comprehensive picture of minimum DNA content evolution in this phylum. The genome size of the heterotardigrade Pseudechiniscus juanitae (0.6 pg), measured using le cells, is found to resemble that of some eutardigrades. Thus, it is not possible to discriminate between the two classes of tardigrades on this basis. Literature and new data on eutardigrades also suggest that families or subfamilies cannot be discriminated on the basis of genome size. Nevertheless, genome size and sperm cell shape are correlated. A lower DNA content always corresponds to a more specialized male gamete. In general, in tardigrades, the low genome size and its low variation could be related to the high specialization of the phylum. Preliminary data on nuclear AT contents suggest that the variations in those values are correlated with genome size variations.  相似文献

During the Iron Age, sea trade in the Mediterranean increased, particularly with the expansion of Phoenician and Greek colonies in the Western Mediterranean. A side effect of these human movements was the involuntary dispersion of commensal species, such as the house mouse (Mus musculus domesticus). One archaeological layer dated from the 4th Century BC, coming from an Iberian village located in the Mediterranean coast of Spain, contained a large and reliable accumulation of small mammals. The presence of the house mouse was highly suspected within this layer. To assess its abundance quantitatively, we used a geometric morphometrics approach of the first lower molar contour using elliptical Fourier analysis. We also increased the power of the discrimination between the Algerian mouse (Mus spretus) and the house mouse by combining a dimension reduction approach together with different validation procedures. The relative importance of age, sex, and geographical origin onto the shape and form of the lower molar contour was also investigated. The results obtained demonstrate the presence and the dominance of the house mouse in the landscape surrounding the Iberian village in the 1st Millennium BC, only a few centuries after its arrival in the Western Mediterranean Basin. A cross‐validated linear discriminant function considering different Mediterranean populations suggest Morocco and France as the most probable geographical origins for the Algerian mouse, and Tunisia for the origin of house mice in North‐Eastern Spain. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 483–497.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Euplotidium itoi harbors on its dorsal surface peculiar episymbionts (referred to as epixenosomes) equipped with a complex extrusive apparatus. In the laboratory. E. itoi stocks without epixenosomes behave and reproduce like symbiotized stocks. the hypothesis that epixenosomes play a defensive role against predators was tested by comparing the behavior of Litonotus lamella when preying upon Euplotes crassus, E. itoi without epixenosomes. and E. itoi with epixenosomes. Litonotus discharges its toxicysts upon direct-cell-to cell contact, and paralyzes the three types of prey with the same efficiency. Nevertheless, Litonotus can ingest Euplotes, Euplotidium without epixenosomes, and to a certain extent, Euplotidium with epixenosomes whose ejecting capability has been inhibited. while it never eats Euplotidium with unaltered epixenosomes. In each prey-type, about 60% of the individuals attacked by Litonotus toxicyst discharge are able to recover their normal behavior once transferred into pure sea water. This percentage for E. itoi with epixenosomes that are never eaten by the predator corresponds to the probability of survival. This probability is lower for the other two prey-types in which the prey engulfed by the predator do not have the chance to recover. These data support the hypothesis and suggest the involvement of the epixenosome's ejecting apparatus in a defensive function.  相似文献

Two standard methods for the determination of osmotic potentialsin plant organs, thermocouple hygrometry of press saps and offreeze-thawed leaf discs, were compared on leaves of ten species.Strictly parallel samples invariably showed lower (more negative)osmotic potentials for the leaf discs. Evidence is presentedthat osmotically-active solutes are not completely extractedduring the preparation of press saps and that the discs contain,on average, a smaller amount of apoplastic water than the saps.Hydrolysis of macromolecules in the discs was not responsiblefor the differences. The presence of the cutinized epidermisresults in a comparatively long equilibration time for leafdiscs, which may be reduced by appropriate measures. Abstract.  Several parasitic wasps of the Pimplinae (Ichneumonidae) use self-produced vibrations transmitted through plant substrate to locate their concealed immobile hosts (lepidopteran pupae) by reflected signals. This mechanosensory mechanism of host location, called vibrational sounding, depends on the physical characteristics of the plant substrate and the wasp's body and is postulated to depend on ambient temperature. Adaptations of two parasitoid species to thermal conditions of their habitats and the influence of temperature on the trophic interaction during host location are investigated in the tropical Xanthopimpla stemmator (Thunberg) and compared with the temperate Pimpla turionellae (L.). Plant-stem models with hidden host mimics are offered to individual wasps under defined temperature treatments and scored for the number and location of ovipositor insertions. Significant effects of temperature are found on host-location activity and its success. The tropical species possesses an optimum temperature range for vibrational sounding between 26 and 32 °C, whereas the performance decreases both at low and high temperatures. The temperate species reveals substantial differences with respect to performance at the same thermal conditions. With increasing temperature, P. turionellae shows a reduced response to the host mimic, reduced numbers of ovipositor insertions, and decreased precision of mechanosensory host location. In the tropical X. stemmator , the female wasps are able to locate their host with high precision over a broad range of ambient temperatures, which suggests endothermic thermoregulation during vibrational sounding. Environmental physiology may therefore play a key role in adaptation of the host location mechanism to climatic conditions of the species' origin.  相似文献

The cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) of codling moth larvae collected in the field from their host plant species, apple and walnut, were analyzed and compared with the CHCs of fruits from these two phylogenetically distant hosts. The CHC profiles of the larvae consisted solely of n‐alkanes (C23–C31) and differed quantitatively between host populations. Amounts of the CHCs from the walnut‐collected larvae were shifted towards longer‐chain alkanes compared to those from apple‐collected larvae. A similar shift was observed for the CHC profiles of walnut and apple fruits. Analysis of the CHCs of larvae reared on artificial diet, in comparison with hydrocarbons from the diet, confirmed that larval CHCs scarcely reflect hydrocarbons from the food source. This finding indicates that the larval hydrocarbons must be biosynthesized to a large degree by the insect, rather than being gained directly from its diet. Hence, codling moth populations from apple and walnut each synthesize their own CHC profiles, which largely resemble those of their respective host plant, yielding a potential tool of chemical camouflage from certain natural antagonists of the larvae. The findings of the present study, together with recent molecular population analyses, provides evidence for a process that might ultimately lead to sympatric speciation of this herbivore species. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 376–384.  相似文献

Dioon argenteum sp. nov. (Zamiaceae) is described from northern Oaxaca, México. Flat leaves, and persistently tomentose, slightly imbricate leaflets with marginal prickles characterize this species. The specific epithet argenteum was chosen to describe the silver appearance of the persistent tomentum covering the new leaves. D. argenteum appears to have affinities with D. purpusii and D. califanoi.   © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 141 , 471–476.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an integrated study of a 115‐m‐thick section that spans the Ypresian/Lutetian boundary at Agost (Betic Cordillera, SE Spain). Our study includes magnetostratigraphic results and biostratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental data derived from planktic foraminifera, small and larger benthic foraminifera, and calcareous nannofossils. Our results demonstrate that the Agost section is continuous and spans from Zones P9 to P12 (E7 to E10), Zones CP11 to CP14a (NP13 to NP16), Zones SBZ11 to SBZ15, and Chrons C22n to C19r. The first occurrence (FO) of H. nuttalli (base of P10) and the FO of G. nuttalli (base of E8) are found within Chron C20r, at a much younger age (3–5 Myr) than previously considered in standard calibration schemes. Similarly, the boundary between SBZ12 and SBZ13 is located within Chron C21n, also at a younger age than previously considered. On the contrary, the FO of B. inflatus (base of CP12b) is found within Chron C21r, which conforms to the magnetostratigraphically calibrated age of ca. 48 Ma (middle part of C21r) considered in standard calibration schemes. These results corroborate earlier studies and indicate that all the events that have been proposed to mark the Ypresian/Lutetian boundary appear at different stratigraphic intervals and have different ages. Based on our results from Agost and on data from other sections elsewhere, we suggest that the Ypresian/Lutetian boundary might be approximated by the FO of B. inflatus (base of CP12b). The Agost section might be considered as a potential candidate to locate the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) of the base of the Lutetian Stage, because it includes all the events that might be selected as marker events for the Ypresian/Lutetian boundary and it fulfils most of the geological, biostratigraphic and infrastructure requirements demanded for definition of a GSSP.  相似文献
