The effects of carbaryl, an insecticide and an abscission agent, and cyhexatin, an acaricide, on the survival, reproductive behaviour and subsequent egg hatch and larval migration of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella L., were investigated under laboratory conditions. Dilution series starting with the concentration recommended for high volume application in the field were evenly sprayed in plastic cups. Depending on the concentration used, both pesticides resulted in high adult mortality, males being more susceptible. Although the total number of the eggs laid by C. pomonella females was significantly reduced in most treatments, the females exposed to different residues of carbaryl laid significantly more eggs during the first 24 h of exposure. This was not the case for cyhexatin. While in all treatments almost 50% of the eggs were laid on the side of the cups, the spatial distribution of the eggs laid under the lid and on the floor was concentration dependent. With one exception, continuous exposure of the moths to carbaryl significantly reduced the number of spermatophores per female. Less than one spermatophore per female was transferred at the highest four concentrations of carbaryl and the highest three concentrations of cyhexatin; whereas, the number of spermatophores per female amounted to about four per female for the other treatments. In contrast to carbaryl, which exhibited a high ovicidal effect at all concentrations, the ovicidal activity of cyhexatin was low. This was manifested in a high rate of egg hatch and the extent of embryonic development in most of the treatments. Furthermore, while carbaryl killed the newly-hatched larvae at all concentrations, cyhexatin acted as a larvicide at the highest two concentrations only.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Water stress may increase or reduce the suitability of plants for herbivores. The recently proposed ‘pulsed stress hypothesis’ suggests consideration of stress phenology (pulsed vs. continuous stress) to explain these conflicting effects of plant water stress on herbivore performance. 2. This hypothesis was tested for the effect of differing stress intensity on performance and preference of insect herbivores belonging to different feeding guilds, namely leaf‐chewing insects (Spodoptera littoralis caterpillars) and phloem‐feeding insects (Aphis pomi aphids), on apple plants (Malus domestica). The plants were non‐stressed or exposed to a low or high intensity of pulsed water stress. 3. Plant responses to the different stress levels were generally monotonic. Growth, stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water, and old‐leaf nitrogen concentration decreased, whereas young‐leaf nitrogen concentration and leaf mass per area (LMA) increased with increasing stress intensity. The stable isotope composition of foliar carbon (δ13C) responded non‐monotonically to the drought treatments. The δ13C values were highest in low‐stress plants, intermediate in high‐stress plants, and lowest in non‐stressed plants. 4. The preference and performance responses of the caterpillars were also non‐monotonic. Non‐stressed plants were intermediately, low‐stress plants least, and high‐stress plants most attractive or suitable. Aphid population growth was highest on non‐stressed plants and lowest on low‐stress plants. 5. The results highlight the importance of water stress intensity for the outcome of interactions between herbivores and drought‐affected plants. They show that pulsed water stress may enhance or reduce insect herbivore performance and plant resistance, depending on stress intensity.  相似文献

1. Anthropogenic pressures have produced heterogeneous landscapes expected to influence diversity differently across trophic levels and spatial scales. 2. We tested how activity density and species richness of carabid trophic groups responded to local habitat and landscape structure (forest percentage cover and habitat richness) in 48 landscape parcels (1 km2) across eight European countries. 3. Local habitat affected activity density, but not species richness, of both trophic groups. Activity densities were greater in rotational cropping compared with other habitats; phytophage densities were also greater in grassland than forest habitats. 4. Controlling for country and habitat effects, we found general trophic group responses to landscape structure. Activity densities of phytophages were positively correlated, and zoophages uncorrelated, with increasing habitat richness. This differential functional group response to landscape structure was consistent across Europe, indicated by a lack of a country × habitat richness interaction. Species richness was unaffected by landscape structure. 5. Phytophage sensitivity to landscape structure may arise from relative dependency on seed from ruderal plants. This trophic adaptation, rare in Carabidae, leads to lower phytophage numbers, increasing vulnerability to demographic and stochastic processes that the greater abundance, species richness, and broader diet of the zoophage group may insure against.  相似文献

Phytochrome B (phyB) can adjust morphological and physiological responses according to changes in the red : far‐red (R:FR) ratio. phyB‐driven acclimation of plants to open environments (high R:FR ratio) increases carbon gain at the expense of increased water loss. This behaviour alleviates stressful conditions generated by an excess of light, but increases the chances of desiccation. Here we evaluated how phyB modulates this drought‐tolerance response by comparing wild‐type Arabidopsis thaliana adult plants to the null phyB in response to water shortage. phyB wilted before the wild type, and this was due to phyB maintaining open stomata under a reduction in soil water availability. Although phyB presented enhanced ABA levels under well‐watered conditions, this mutant was less sensitive than the wild type in diminishing stomatal conductance in response to exogenous ABA application. Reduced sensitivity to ABA in phyB correlated with a lower expression of ABCG22, which encodes a putative ABA influx transporter, and PYL5, which encodes a soluble ABA receptor. Furthermore, the expression of RAB18 and RD29A, both typical ABA‐induced genes, was lower in phyB than the wild type after ABA treatment. We propose that phyB contributes to the acclimation of plants to open environments by enhancing ABA sensitivity when soil water becomes limiting.  相似文献

The intrinsic fluorescence of vitelline envelope from amphibian eggs was enhanced after having been treated with pars recta secretion fluid. At the same time the total number of binding sites for 8-anilino-1-naphthalene sulfonate (ANS) was increased, with the affinity constant remaining unchanged. These observations are interpreted in terms of a structural change of the vitelline envelope submitted to pars recta fluid effect.  相似文献

Cydia pomonella L. is an important insect pest of pome fruits worldwide. We have isolated and characterized 17 microsatellite loci from the enriched genomic libraries constructed using a biotin/streptavidin capture protocol. Among these loci, 11 were scored polymorphic when 50 individuals from a laboratory population were screened. Their alleles numbered two to four, with the observed heterozygosity (HO) ranging from 0.114 to 0.404. Successful amplification was obtained for all these loci when the designed primers were tested, showing the promise of use in genetic mapping and population studies.  相似文献

Heterochrony produces morphological change with effects in shape, size, and/or timing of developmental events of a trait related to an ancestral ontogeny. This paper analyzes heterochrony during the ontogeny of Ceratophryinae (Ceratophrys, Chacophrys, and Lepidobatrachus), a monophyletic group of South American frogs with larval development, and uses different approaches to explore their morphological evolution: (1) inferences of ancestral ontogenies and heterochronic variation from a cladistic analysis based on 102 morphological larval and adult characters recorded in ten anuran taxa; (2) comparisons of size, morphological variation, and timing (age) of developmental events based on a study of ontogenetic series of ceratophryines, Telmatobius atacamensis, and Pseudis platensis. We found Chacophrys as the basal taxon. Ceratophrys and Lepidobatrachus share most derived larval features resulting from heterochrony. Ceratophryines share high rates of larval development, but differ in rates of postmetamorphic growth. The ontogeny of Lepidobatrachus exhibits peramorphic traits produced by the early onset of metamorphic transformations that are integrated in an unusual larval morphology. Trifolium repens L. and Lolium perenne L. were grown in monocultures and bi-species mixture in a Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) experiment at elevated (60 Pa) and ambient (35 Pa) CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) for three years. The effects of defoliation frequencies (4 and 7 cuts in 1993; 4 and 8 cuts in 1994/95) and nitrogen fertilization (10 and 42 g m–2 y–1 N in 1993; 14 and 56 g m–2 y–1 N in 1994/95) on the growth response to pCO2 were investigated. There were significant interspecific differences in the CO2 responses during the first two years, while in the third growing season, these interspecific differences disappeared. Yield of T. repens in monocultures increased in the first two years by 20% when grown at elevated pCO2. This CO2 response was independent of defoliation frequency and nitrogen fertilization. In the third year, the CO2 response of T. repens declined to 11%. In contrast, yield of L. perenne monocultures increased by only 7% on average over three years at elevated pCO2. The yield response of L. perenne to CO2 changed according to defoliation frequency and nitrogen fertilization, mainly in the second and third year. The ratio of root/yield of L. perenne increased under elevated pCO2, low N fertilizer rate, and frequent defoliation, but it remained unchanged in T. repens. We suggest that the more abundant root growth of L. perenne was related to increased N limitation under elevated pCO2. The consequence of these interspecific differences in the CO2 response was a higher proportion of T. repens in the mixed swards at elevated pCO2. This was evident in all combinations of defoliation and nitrogen treatments. However, the proportion of the species was more strongly affected by N fertilization and defoliation frequency than by elevated pCO2. Based on these results, we conclude that the species proportion in managed grassland may change as the CO2 concentration increases. However, an adapted management could, at least partially, counteract such CO2 induced changes in the proportion of the species. Since the availability of mineral N in the soil may be important for the species’ responses to elevated pCO2, more long-term studies, particularly of processes in the soil, are required to predict the entire ecosystem response.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. [35S]methionine incorporation into proteins of either T. cruzi epimastigotes or trypomastigotes was drastically inhibited by low concentrations of crystal violet in a dose-dependent manner. This inhibition was not due to ATP depletion since cellular ATP levels did not change significantly after incubation of epimastigotes with 50 μM crystal violet for similar periods of time, and was unaffected by changes in the extracellular free calcium concentration. Although crystal violet was able to inhibit protein synthesis in a cell-free system from T. cruzi epimastigotes, half maximal inhibition was at 1 mM, a concentration three orders of magnitude higher than those that inhibited protein synthesis in intact cells. On the other hand, crystal violet was able to inhibit total [35S]methionine uptake at similar concentrations to those that inhibited protein synthesis while addition of increasing concentrations of cold methionine to the incubation medium protected the cells against crystal violet inhibition. Crystal violet also inhibited total [3H]proline uptake thus indicating that it has a general inhibitory effect upon the transport of amino acids, and not specifically upon methionine. These results indicate that inhibition of protein synthesis by crystal violet is probably due to inhibition of amino acid uptake.  相似文献
