The efficacy of six chemicals as selective male gametocideson perennial ryegrass plants was studied by making use of agenetic marker technique. In a preliminary screening experimenteach of the chemicals was used in five concentrations and infive treatments at several stages of development at or nearear emergence. Promising treatments from within this experimentwere assessed in more detail subsequently. In most treatmentsfemale fertility was impaired more than male fertility. Washed vegetative cells of various species of aerobic spore-forming bacteria sporulate abundantly when shaken in distilled water in air. The spores thus formed possess the same heat resistance as spores formed in a complete growth medium. Various factors influencing sporogenesis in water are described. Glucose in low concentration completely suppresses sporogenesis under these conditions and the suppression is relieved by the presence of ammonia as an exogenous source of nitrogen. Various amino acid and purine antimetabolite analogues inhibit sporogenesis and their inhibitory effects are completely reversed by much smaller amounts of the corresponding metabolites. Sporogenesis is thus regarded as a de novo synthesis of spore proteins from preexisting endogenous (enzyme) proteins. Cells low in protein fail to sporulate and the capacity of the cell to adaptively attack maltose and trehalose is strongly interfered with after the cell is irreversibly committed to sporulation, but not before that. Evidence is advanced supporting the hypothesis that sporogenesis is an endogenous process which commences when the supply of exogenous energy and carbon is depleted. It utilizes low molecular weight nitrogenous substances liberated by the degradation of preexisting enzyme proteins of the vegetative cell. Sporogenesis and adaptive enzyme formation are regarded as competitive synthetic processes, both utilizing endogenous enzyme proteins. The events of sporogenesis suggest that this process may be an adaptive protein synthesis, analogous to adaptive enzyme synthesis. 相似文献

SUMMARY. The algal flora of the Rivers Hayle and Gannel. whieh drain copper and lead mining regions of Cornwall, are described and compared. Although fluctuations in the rarer members of the algal communities were observed, the dominant filamentous algae at most sites did not change over the year of study. Both the total algal abundance and the number of species were depressed at high metal sites. Associations of species that were evident in field samples were confirmed and correlated with water metal levels by principal component analysis. The close similarity between the flora of similar sites on the copper-polluted River Hayle and the lead-polluted River Gannei implies that the degree of metal pollution, rather than the polluting metal per se, determines the species present. All mine sites were characterized by a Microspora -community whereas a Zygnemales community of Spirogyra and Mougeotia species was typical of low metal pollution. Moderately polluted sites downsteam of the mines had an intermediate flora of Zygnemaies, Microsporales. Ulotrichales and gelatinous Volvocales and Tetrasporales species. No species could be said to invariably indicate metal pollution; the most abundant species at highly contaminated sites were also those with the widest distributions. Field samples of filamentous algae (mainly Spirogyra, Zygogonium, Mougeotia and Microspora species) contained metal concentrations several orders of magnitude greater than ambient levels. For copper and iron, both algal metal contents and concentration ratios (μg g-1 algae/μg ml-1 water) were positive functions of water metal levels, although algal iron appeared to plateau at water concentrations of about 1 mg ml-1. Algal lead concentrations, but not the concentration ratios, also were positively correlated with water lead levels. Thus, for these three metals, the algal metal contents were indicative of ambient conditions. In contrast, algal zinc concentrations were nearly constant and consequently the concentration ratios for this metal were inversely related to water levels. This result suggests that unlike the uptake of other metals, uptake of zinc by these aigae may be strictly regulated. 相似文献

The coral-treaders (Hermatobatidae) are the only exclusively marine family of insects. Observations in the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji show that the insects can be abundant on shores that provide rocks with cavities that remain air-filled during high tide. The zone of suitable habitats for the insects is restricted to a narrow ( c. 20 cm) vertical band roughly centred around Mean Low Water Neaps. Transplant experiments show that the insects are unable to survive above or below this zone. The insects emerge from their rocky crevices about an hour before low tide, swim on the water surface during low tide, and return to their crevices about an hour after the tide has turned. There are only four larval instars, which can be readily separated by their morphology. Electron microscope studies show that the insects are clothed in a layer of micro-hairs of unique design: a short tapering shaft tipped with a sphere. These micro-hairs may act as a plastron: their distribution corresponds precisely to the pattern of the silvery 'air-layer' seen when the insects are submerged, their spherical tips provide a regular array that could support an air-water interface, they occur at high densities (up to 3.5 times 106 mm-2 ), and the layer makes connection with the thoracic spiracles. Half the insects were able to survive submergence in recirculated seawater for 12 hours.
