The mealybug tribe Xenococcini (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) comprises three genera, Eumyrmococcus Silvestri, Neochavesia Williams & Granara de Willink and Xenococcus Silvestri, trophobiotically associated with ants of the genus Acropyga Roger (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Alate Acropyga queens vertically transmit trophobionts by carrying them along on the nuptial flight, a unique behaviour termed trophophoresy. Xenococcine mealybugs have never been collected without ant associates, and putatively only associate with Acropyga. Xenococcine mealybugs are characterized by the absence of dorsal ostioles, presence of distally cup‐shaped circuli and a female pupal instar rather than a third feeding instar. The phylogeny of this tribe is derived for the first time using morphological data from adult females (53 characters) through Bayesian inference and maximum parsimony methods. Monophyly of the clade is strongly supported and a discussion of their taxonomy is included. The Neotropical genus Neochavesia was recovered as monophyletic. Eumyrmococcus, as previously defined, was recovered as paraphyletic, and thus two species are transferred to Xenococcus: Xenococcus kinomurai (Williams & Terayama) comb.n. and Xenococcus neoguineensis (Williams) comb.n . Two species groups are recognized within Eumyrmococcus: the Eumyrmococcus scorpioides species group, restricted to the eastern Mediterranean and Afrotropics, and the Eumyrmococcus smithii species group, restricted to the Orient and Indo‐Australasia. Six new species are described: Eumyrmococcus adornocapillus sp.n. from Australia; Eumyrmococcus sarnati sp.n. from Fiji; Eumyrmococcus ordinotersus sp.n. and Xenococcus baryglobosus sp.n. from the Solomon Islands; Neochavesia cephalonodus sp.n. from French Guiana; and Neochavesia linealuma sp.n. from Guyana. The systematics and biology of the xenococcine mealybugs is discussed in the context of obligate ant symbiosis. 相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of extant and extinct Megalyridae are analysed at the genus level. The dataset comprises seven outgroup taxa, all eight extant genera and a number of extinct taxa that have been associated with Megalyridae, including two genera from Maimetshidae, whose affinity with Megalyridae is uncertain. Analytical results are unstable because some of the fossil taxa have many missing entries. The most stable results are produced when the maimetshid taxa and Cretodinapsis are excluded. When included, these taxa fall outside crown‐group Megalyridae, the maimetshid taxa being the sister of Orthogonalys (Trigonalidae). Based on the results of our analyses, we synonymize the fossil genera Rubes Perrichot n.syn . and Ukrainosa Perrichot & Perkovsky n.syn . with Prodinapsis, creating the new combinations Prodinapsis bruesi n.comb . and Prodinapsis prolata n.comb . When comparing past and present distributions of Megalyridae with the results of the phylogenetic analyses, it is evident that the genera radiated in the Mesozoic, and that the family as a whole was much more widespread then. The present‐day distribution is essentially relictual, with range contraction since the early Tertiary probably being the result of climate deterioration, which caused the disappearance of tropical forests throughout the Palaearctic. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Harvest of furbearers through trapping has been challenged by anti-trapping organizations for centuries, with organizational goals often including prohibition of all forms of trapping. Challenges to trapping may also include dissention among state wildlife agencies, pro-hunting organizations, and pro-trapping organizations. Despite recent efforts by anti-trapping organizations and occasional dissention among consumptive-use groups, national trends in snaring regulations included less restrictive regulations through time. This positive trend may offer opportunities for state wildlife agencies and pro-trapping organizations to enhance the public image of trapping, increase recruitment of trappers, and reverse the increasing trend of wildlife damage and associated costs. We offer support and suggestions to state wildlife agencies and pro-trapping organizations to help achieve these goals, with their partnership likely having a synergistic effect. Although we attempt to illuminate approaches for increasing support for trapping within the constraints of the cultural norms of the United States, we hope our approaches are useful to and promote dialogue in other jurisdictions experiencing similar problems. 相似文献

The uptake of cobalt by Rhodymenia palmata from sea-water hasbeen studied by the use of radio-cobalt 6o. Periodic absorptionand desorption associated with illumination have been found.A dependence on carbon dioxide concentration has also been established.No effect of the addition of antibiotics to the sea-water canbe detected and no evidence of cobalt fixation as vitamin B12has been obtained. Instead, another stable organic compoundof cobalt has been discovered, differing from vitamin B12 inchromatographic and ionophoretic behaviour. ABSTRACT. Metanophrys diminuta n. sp., a marine philasterine scuticociliate collected from the south Florida coast, was preserved for transmission electron microscopy using a mixed fixation technique. Rough endoplasmic reticulum profiles were found proximal to mitochondria and within mitochondrial fenestrations (or deep pockets). In longitudinal sections mitochondrial profiles appear to be very long, occupying almost the entire length of the cell. The micronucleus is roughly spherical to ovoid, semi-enclosed in the macronucleus. The oral polykinetid #1 is composed of two files of kinetosomes. The c segment of the oral dikinetid is composed of three to four kinetosomes. This species is the smallest within the genus Metanophrys. 相似文献
