Boyeria irene and Boyeria cretensis are species of spotted dragonflies belonging to the ‘darner’ family, Aeshnidae. In 1991, Peters classified Boyeria from Crete as B. cretensis, based on adult morphological characters. In this study, we used molecular evidence to determine if indeed B. irene and B. cretensis are different species. DNA was sequenced from samples of B. irene (from France, Switzerland, Tunisia, Spain and Italy) and B. cretensis (from Crete). These species were recovered as two different clades with strong support. We conclude that B. irene and B. cretensis are different species, with evidence based on molecular and morphological differences. In addition, we present the first phylogenetic hypothesis for Boyeria for which we have sequenced all but three species. Lastly, we discuss different scenarios that may have led to the present‐day distribution and speciation patterns of Mediterranean Boyeria. 相似文献

Vibratory communication during reproductive behaviour is less well described in predatory (Asopinae) than in phytophagous (Pentatominae) stink bugs. Different steps in the mating behaviour of the predatory stink bug Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae; Asopinae) are described in the present study, together with vibratory signals emitted on artificial and natural substrate during courtship and copulation. Vibratory signals in Podisus nigrispinus have a decisive role in copulation success and are produced in both sexes by abdominal vibration and tremulation. In P. nigrispinus, one species‐specific female and two male songs, which do not show the calling function typically found in phytophagous stink bugs, are produced by abdominal vibration and are emitted during reproductive behaviour. Additionally, P. nigrispinus produces tremulatory signals that have no species or sex specificity. Tremulatory signals emitted spontaneously on a plant as a sequence of readily repeated pulses are similar to the calling songs of the Pentatominae stink bug. These signals may carry information on the presence of a mate; however, in other behavioural contexts, they may have a different function, such as advertisement or even alarm signals. Plants transmit vibratory signals produced by both mechanisms as a low‐pass filter, increasing the amount of low‐frequency components. The results of the present study raise important questions about the interaction between chemical and vibratory signals in the mating behaviour of predatory stink bugs. 相似文献

Fluorescence-labeled neuropeptide Y (NPY) has been used in flow cytometric binding assays for the determination of affinity constants of NPY Y1, Y2, and Y5 receptor ligands. Because the binding of fluorescent NPY is insufficient for competition studies at the human Y4 receptor (hY4R), we replaced Glu-4 in hPP with Lys for the derivatization with cyanine-5. Because cy5-[K4]hPP has high affinity (Kd 5.6 nM) to the hY4R, it was used as a probe in a flow cytometric binding assay. Specific binding of cy5-[K4]hPP to hY4R was visualized by confocal microscopy. The hY4R, the chimeric G protein Gqi5 and mitochondrially targeted apoaequorin were stably coexpressed in CHO cells. Aequorin luminescence was quantified in a microplate reader and by a CCD camera. By application of these methods 3-cyclohexyl-N-[(3-1H-imidazol-4-ylpropylamino)(imino)methyl]propanamide (UR-AK49) was discovered as the first nonpeptidic Y4R antagonist (pKi 4.17), a lead to be optimized in terms of potency and selectivity. 相似文献

The semiaquatic grasshopper Cornops aquaticum is native to South America, with a distribution as far south as the Argentinean pampas and as far north as the Gulf of Mexico. This grasshopper is being proposed as a form of biological control agent for the invasive aquatic macrophyte (Eichhornia crassipes) in South Africa. The results of a molecular study (six microsatellite loci) conducted on 11 C. aquaticum populations is presented. Unlike in contiguous mainland South American populations, we found genetic diversity to be lowest in a South African quarantine population, with reduced values in two other isolated populations from South America. In addition, Fst/Rst/analysis of molecular variance and Bayesian cluster analysis suggested high levels of connectivity between mainland populations. The implications of these findings and their relationship to those of a recent morphological study suggest that the suitability of C. aquaticum as a form of biocontrol might be unpredictable at best. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 666–676. 相似文献
