Abstract Invasive exotic plants are a significant threat to areas of conservation value, with endangered ecological communities being especially vulnerable. We assessed the role of different anthropogenic disturbances in determining the success of exotic plants in the endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland community of western Sydney and examined the impact of these disturbances on soil characteristics that are likely to impact on vegetation, including total P, pH, water retention capacity, organic matter content and electrical conductivity. The disturbance types were: (i) land use incorporating clearing, agriculture and grazing by stock; (ii) creeks draining a developed catchment; and (iii) roads. Remnants that had been cleared and grazed had higher exotic and lower native species richness and cover than all other disturbance types. Areas that had been grazed but not cleared did not have more exotic species richness or cover than uncleared/ungrazed areas, thus retaining high conservation value. Areas within 2 m of a creek edge had higher exotic species richness and cover than areas further from the creek edge. Areas downslope of sealed roads had significantly higher exotic species richness and cover than areas below unsealed roads. No single soil attribute or combination of soil attributes was consistently able to account for variation in exotic species cover under the different disturbance types. Thus it appears that other factors such as site history and propagule pressure may be more important in determining exotic species success than soil characteristics alone, in this vegetation community. 相似文献

Twenty-four plant species native or naturalized in Britain weregrown in the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, UK and evaluatedas potential resources for nectar-foraging bees, butterfliesand hoverflies. In ten plant species a series of measurementswere made, at regular intervals from dawn to dusk, of nectarsecretion rate and standing crop, and in all species insectvisits were monitored throughout daylight hours. The study revealeddifferences between plant species in the composition of theassemblage of insect visitors, and in the magnitude and temporaldistribution of the nectar reward. In some cases we found interestingcorrelations between temperature and secretion rates or patternsof insect visits. Species that received numerous insect visitsin our study are potentially valuable forage plants that mightbe planted by gardeners to support local pollinator populations.Deep flowers whose nectar is accessible to long-tongued bumblebees(Bombus hortorum, B. pascuorum) but not to honeybees may providelong-tongued pollinators with a resource refuge relatively freefrom honeybee competition. The pollination biology of Syzygium sayeri was documented using the special capabilities of the Australian Canopy Crane. Syzygium sayeri is a xenogamous species with poor self-compatibility, moderate levels of natural out-crossing, and the producer of copious amounts nectar throughout the day and night. Of a diverse fauna associated with, and visiting the flowers of S. sayeri , larger vertebrates (blossom bats and honeyeaters) account for approximately half its natural pollination rate, while the balance of pollination is attributable to a host of invertebrate visitors (wasps, flies, thrips, butterflies). Day and night pollinators contributed approximately equally to the successful pollination of S. sayeri ; although the number of individuals visiting flowers was greater during the day, further experimentation might reveal night visitors to be more effective pollinators. The co-occurrence of vertebrates and invertebrates, as well as day and night visitors, suggests that S. sayeri has a generalist pollination system, whereby the absence of a discrete set of faunae could be compensated for by the presence of other pollinators. What is not clear is the contribution of different pollinators to the population success (i.e. gene flow) of this species. Abstract Soil was investigated in a Cumberland Plain Woodland community to determine the presence of a soil seed‐bank and whether species richness and abundance of plants germinating from it were affected by heating such as that experienced in a fire. Soil samples were taken from the Holsworthy Military Area, in the south‐eastern region of the Sydney Basin, New South Wales, Australia, and one of four treatments was applied; soil was heated to 80°C, 40°C, unheated or unheated with litter not removed. Sixty‐eight species, representing 26 families including 11 exotic and 57 native species germinated from the soil. Herbs and grasses dominated and were in similar proportions to those surveyed in the above‐ground vegetation, suggesting that the soil seed‐bank reflected the current structure of the vegetation, although species composition differed. Species responded differently to heating. The seeds of some species germinated when heated at a higher temperature (80°C), particularly those from the family Fabaceae, whereas other species were more common in unheated or lightly heated samples (40°C). This suggests that fire is likely to change the species composition of the above‐ground vegetation and indicates that management must ensure that species that do not germinate when heated are maintained, as well as those species that germinate following heating. A large proportion of soil seed‐bank species showed low germination rates in the trials, and 112 above‐ground species did not germinate in the soil samples. We do not understand whether species of these two sets do not produce a soil‐stored seed‐bank or whether the seed‐bank has been depleted by past practices at Holsworthy. Measurements were made of Oystercatcher corpses to find the most reliable measure of body condition in live birds. Total body weight was as accurate as muscle thickness in assessing the weight of the pectoral muscles, a major store of protein reserves. Total body weight was also a good indicator of fat reserves. Wing‐length was the most reliable measure of body size. Body condition in live birds was measured as an individual's residual weight derived from a general linear model of (loge) body weight against age, month, (loge) wing‐length and time since capture. On the Exe estuary in autumn, there was no significant difference in body condition between same‐age Oystercatchers of different diets and feeding methods. In the winter months, however, body condition differed significantly between mussel feeders using different feeding methods, and between mussel feeders and birds that fed on worms and clams. Differences between diet/feeding methods were not the same for each age group. Birds with the highest mean body condition index in adults were mussel hammerers, in immatures mussel stabbers and in juveniles, worm/clam feeders. No significant difference in body condition was found between the sexes in any age group in autumn. In winter, when birds with the same diet/feeding method were considered, females were significantly heavier than males. However, when birds of all diets and feeding methods were combined, weight differences between the sexes were not apparent. We examine reasons why birds with certain diets and feeding methods may be heavier than others in winter, and why females are sometimes heavier than males. We conclude that, in most cases, it is due to differences between birds in their ability to achieve a common target weight. However, we conclude that adult females try to achieve a higher target weight than males, probably as a premigratory and prebreeding strategy. In the light of this, we consider the consequences for adult females, in terms of reproductive success and survival, of specializing in diets and feeding methods associated with lower body weights in winter. 相似文献

Abstract. The effect of semen storage time, drone age and semen contamination on honey bee semen quality was investigated using assays for motility and viability of semen in vitro. Four age groups (1, 2, 4 and 6 weeks) and five storage times (0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 weeks) were examined. As storage time increased, sperm viability and motility significantly decreased. However, motility patterns of unstored semen samples were significantly lower than those samples that were stored up to 2 weeks. Sperm viability decreased significantly with increasing drone age, but motility patterns did not change. Those semen samples that were found to be contaminated with foreign particles or microorganisms had a significantly lower mean viability than uncontaminated samples. 相似文献

- 1 The question of whether the diets of twelve abundant macroinvertebrate taxa from the middle and lower reaches of the Buffalo River (eastern Cape, South Africa) were too variable to allow them to be assigned to functional feeding groups (FFGs) was addressed.
- 2 Spatial, temporal and developmental variations in diet were assessed. Foregut content analysis was used as an index to compare diets.
- 3 Foregut contents were compared from early (small) and late (large) instar larvae collected from riffles at thirteen sites in summer, and from riffles, stony backwaters and sediments at four of these sites in spring, summer, autumn and winter, in 1987.
- 4 For all individuals of all taxa, fine amorphous detritus (0.5–250 μm), was the most common dietary item. Differences in diet followed a similar pattern for all taxa. The most frequent differences in dietary content were between large and small larvae. The foreguts of large larvae contained more material, and a wider variety of rare items than small larvae. Neither species nor FFGs could be distinguished on the basis of foregut contents.
- 5 Two dietary types were recognized. The eight mayfly larvae were fine detritivores, having ingested fine detritus almost exclusively. In contrast, the two hydropsychid caddisfly larvae had ingested a mixed diet; their gut contents included chirinous invertebrate remains and other items as well as fine detritus.
- 6 Intra-specific dietary variability was not so great as to prevent these taxa from being assigned to FFGs. On the contrary, inter-specific dietary content was so similar that gut content analysis could not provide a positive basis upon which to identify FFGs.

The folded and twisted calcareous ribbon, forming both the ascending and descending lamellae of the loop of Waltonia inconspicua (Sowerby), is a two-layered structure consisting of a wedge of regularly stacked secondary layer fibres that overlie a thin layer of non-fibrous calcite (herein termed brachiotest). On one surface, that facing into the mantle cavity, secondary fibrous mosaic predominates, but smooth, finely banded brachiotest occurs as a narrow marginal lip upon which secondary layer fibres proliferate and progressively overlap. This growing edge of the ribbon is secreted by long, folded epithelial cells with digitate extensions to their apical plasmalemmas, which are distinguishable from the cuboidal epithelium-secreting fibres and their membranous sheaths. The other surface, facing the body cavity and the brachial coelom, consists entirely of roughened brachiotest exhibiting prominent banding that is aligned parallel to the growing loop edge. This surface is overlain by microfilamentar epithelium acting as a holdfast for the connective tissue frame of the lophophore. The other edge of the ribbon consists of truncated sections of both secondary-layer fibres and brachiotest which bear signs of resorption consistent with the degenerated state of the associated epithelium. Growth of the Waltonia loop is controlled by these localized processes of secretion and resorption of the fibrous and brachiotest layers and is typical of all terebratulides so far studied.
