Female Glossina pallidipes Austen trapped with baited NG2B traps were subjected both to detailed ovarian dissection and to nutritional analysis. Using a calibration curve derived from dissected wild-caught, laboratory-held flies, the field females were assigned by discriminant analysis to each day of the pregnancy cycle. Field females were most available to NG2B traps while carrying the first instar larva. The nutritional characteristics of trapped field females over the pregnancy cycle lead to the following main conclusions. (i) Fat levels increase most rapidly during the egg in utero stage, while CRDW increases significantly only during the larval stages, culminating in a 4 mg increase during the last day of the third larval instar. (ii) The haematin content of the flies indicates that females feed at approximately 3-day intervals and may feed on any day of the pregnancy cycle. (iii) The estimated time of feeding during the day corresponds with the observed time of peak activity, both of which are earlier in the day later in the pregnancy cycle. (iv) The rate of fat usage reveals significantly greater flight activity on day 5 of the cycle than on other days, agreeing with the high trappability on this day, and overall females appear to use fat at twice the rate of males. Reproductive data provide a much more accurate picture of the relative sampling efficiency than do nutritional data, although the latter reveal the general trends correctly. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. A diplomonad flagellate, Spironucleus torosa n. sp. is described from Atlantic Cod Gadus morhua and haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus . This is believed to be the 1st confirmed report of Spironucleus from a marine fish. Organisms swimming in the rectal lumen were broadly pyriform to elongate, and measured 10.5–18.6 μm long and 3.2–13.3 μm wide; other elongate organisms were attached to the rectal epithelium, via apical extensions appearing continuous with the microvilli. The posterior end of the body was extended into a caudal projection, on either side of which was a posteriolateral ring-shaped protrusion or torus, with a recurrent flagellum emerging from its centre. A symmetrical system of microtubules and lamellae, forming a "V" in protargol impregnated specimens, supported the flanges of the body surrounding the tori, the tori themselves and the caudal projection. Supranuclear microtubules were an inverted V to U shape in transverse section, and an electron dense band accompanied the cytostomes. Lightly staining homogenous cytoplasm was usually present in the anterior part of the body, the remainder being highly vacuolated with numerous dark granules. In swimming organisms, rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) was present around the nuclei and cytostomes, and bacteria were occasionally seen in the cytoplasm. In "attached" organisms, RER was reduced, and bacteria were absent. Hexamita salmonis Moore from Salvelinus fontinalis was studied by light and scanning electron microscopy for comparison; its cytoplasm was not highly vacuolated. The two recurrent flagella emerged close together from the blunt posterior end of the body. 相似文献

The integration of macroevolutionary pattern with developmental mechanism presents an outstanding challenge for studies of phenotypic evolution. Here, we use a combination of experimental and comparative data to test whether evolutionary shifts in the direction of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) correspond to underlying changes in the endocrine regulation of growth. First, we combine captive breeding studies with mark‐recapture data to show that male‐biased SSD develops in the brown anole lizard (Anolis sagrei) because males grow significantly faster than females as juveniles and adults. We then use castration surgeries and testosterone implants to show that castration inhibits, and testosterone stimulates, male growth. We conclude by reviewing published testosterone manipulations in other squamate reptiles in the context of evolutionary patterns in SSD. Collectively, these studies reveal that the evolution of SSD has been accompanied by underlying changes in the effect of testosterone on male growth, potentially facilitating the rapid evolution of SSD. 相似文献

Saiphos equalis , a semi-fossorial scincid lizard from south-eastern Australia, is one of only three reptile species world-wide that are known to display geographic variation in reproductive mode. Uniquely, Saiphos equalis includes populations with three reproductive modes: oviparous with long (15-day) incubation periods; oviparous with short (5-day) incubation periods; and viviparous (0-day incubation periods). No Saiphos populations show 'normal' scincid oviparity (> 30-day incubation period). We used mitochondrial nucleotide sequences ( ND2 and cytochrome b ) to reconstruct relationships among populations from throughout the species' distribution in New South Wales, Australia. Under the phylogenetic species concept, phylogenetic analyses are consistent with the oviparous and viviparous populations of S. equalis being conspecific. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that the long incubation period oviparous lineage is the sister group to all other populations; and that the viviparous populations belong to a cluster of weakly supported clades basal to the short-incubation-period oviparous clade. These clades correspond to variation in reproductive mode and geographic location. 相似文献
