The systematics of the Asplenium seelosii complex has been debated for a long time. This complex includes strictly rupicolous plants that live on limestone cliffs mainly in the mountains of south-west Europe: the Alps, the Pyrenees, and several mountain ranges of the eastern Iberian Peninsula. The disjunct distribution of its populations and several morphological characters, i.e. leaf indumentum and the structure of the perispore, have been used to distinguish two species and up to four subspecies. The goal of this study was to determine whether the characters of the gametophytic generation and young sporophytes can contribute to the recognition of the proposed taxa. The analysis of all of these characters together differentiated two groups that correspond to the established species, A. seelosii and A. celtibericum , but not enough differences were found to separate the subspecies in each of them.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 375–386.  相似文献

1. The quality of allochthonous organic matter influences the transfer of energy and nutrients through recipient food webs. We investigated the effects of variation in the composition of riparian forests (deciduous, mixed, coniferous) on the elemental imbalance between basal resources and consumers in streams, on consumer feeding and on potential feedbacks to riparian systems via emergent aquatic insects. 2. We tested for differences in elemental stoichiometry (carbon/nitrogen/phosphorus; C/N/P) and stable isotopes (?13C and ?15N) between deciduous (red alder, Alnus rubra) and coniferous litter (western hemlock, Tsuga heterophylla) and among abundant stream invertebrates from streams draining different riparian forests (deciduous, mixed, coniferous). We then assessed shredder feeding preferences (of the trichopteran, Lepidostoma unicolor) for litter incubated in streams with these different forest types and quantified differences in emergence of aquatic and semiaquatic insects among streams. 3. Both initial (non‐incubated) and stream‐incubated A. rubra litter had lower C/N and C/P and were more depleted in ?13C and more enriched in ?15N, than T. heterophylla litter. The stoichiometry of invertebrate tissue did not vary significantly among taxa or with riparian forest composition. A predator (the plecopteran Chloroperlidae) and a collector‐gatherer (the ephemeropteran Paraleptophlebia gregalis) from mixed and coniferous forest streams were more enriched in ?13C and ?15N isotopes than those from deciduous streams, suggesting that low availability of palatable, N‐rich A. rubra litter may constrain energy flow and nutrient fluxes up through the food web in systems with little or no A. rubra. 4. Consumption of A. rubra litter by L. unicolor was most rapid when the litter had been incubated in streams draining deciduous forests, whereas consumption of T. heterophylla litter was not influenced by the composition of the riparian forest. 5. Peak insect emergence from coniferous forest streams occurred 1 month earlier and at 2–3× higher density than from mixed and deciduous‐forest streams, but total biomass of emerging insects throughout the study period was not different between forest types. Assemblages of emerging insects were different between deciduous and coniferous forest streams, and taxon richness and diversity were nearly 2× greater from deciduous than from coniferous forest streams. 6. Forest composition influences stream invertebrate feeding and could have reciprocal feedbacks onto riparian systems via altered insect emergence.  相似文献

(Cyperaceae), with special reference to the Iberian and North African taxa. Karyological studies were carried out on Iberian and North African populations of all species included in sections Spirostachyae and Ceratocystis of the genus Carex , with observations made on meiotic divisions in one to seven individuals per population. In the light of the karyological data we present hypotheses of the most probable phylogeny of the section Spirostachyae , and of the relationships of the sections Spirostachyae, Ceratocystis and Elatae. Based on known data sets and maximum entropy distribution data of fern and lycopod species registered in the Yucatán Peninsula, track and parsimony analyses were undertaken to evaluate the contribution of these groups to the establishment of biogeographical relationships of the peninsula with other areas. The resulting generalized tracks clearly agree with the geological origin of the peninsula and the previously recognized relationship with the Greater Antilles is not supported for ferns and lycopods. Instead, a Central American generalized track connects the Yucatán Peninsula with south‐eastern México and Central America. Floristically, the peninsula harbours 66 species of ferns and lycopods. Seven are registered for the first time in the Yucatán Peninsula and one is a new species for México. These species do not follow the latitudinal pattern expected if ecological factors, such as humidity and rainfall, were the most important in determining their distributions. Groups of areas recognized with parsimony analysis of endemicity could not be defined as provinces as a result of the lack of endemic species. Nevertheless, a regionalization scheme based on maximum entropy distribution data and supported by track analyses is proposed. Section Choretropsis genus Phyllanthus (Euphorbiaceae) is formed by plants whose branches are modified into phylloclades. Despite the suitable characteristics of phylloclades within the Phyllanthus genus, the systematics of these species are poorly understood. Morphological data are presented here to allow future revision of this taxonomic group. The section is represented by nine species distributed in South America, eight of them endemic to Brazil. Our taxonomic studies distinguish the species and propose the synonymization of nine varieties of P. klotzschianus and two varieties of P. flagelliformis based on vegetative and reproductive characters. Assessing the potential future of current forest stands is a key to design conservation strategies and understanding potential future impacts to ecosystem service supplies. This is particularly true in the Mediterranean basin, where important future climatic changes are expected. Here, we assess and compare two commonly used modeling approaches (niche‐ and process‐based models) to project the future of current stands of three forest species with contrasting distributions, using regionalized climate for continental Spain. Results highlight variability in model ability to estimate current distributions, and the inherent large uncertainty involved in making projections into the future. CO2 fertilization through projected increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations is shown to increase forest productivity in the mechanistic process‐based model (despite increased drought stress) by up to three times that of the non‐CO2 fertilization scenario by the period 2050–2080, which is in stark contrast to projections of reduced habitat suitability from the niche‐based models by the same period. This highlights the importance of introducing aspects of plant biogeochemistry into current niche‐based models for a realistic projection of future species distributions. We conclude that the future of current Mediterranean forest stands is highly uncertain and suggest that a new synergy between niche‐ and process‐based models is urgently needed in order to improve our predictive ability.  相似文献

This paper explores the evolutionary implications of the enormous variability that characterizes populations of RNA viruses and retroviruses. It begins by examining the magnitude of genetic variation in both natural and experimental populations. In natural populations, differences arise even within individual infected patients, with the per-site nucleotide diversity at this level ranging from < 1% to 6%. In laboratory populations, two viruses sampled from the same clone differed by ∼0.7% in their fitness. Three different mechanisms that may be important in maintaining viral genetic variability were tested: (1) Fisher's fundamental theorem, to compare the observed rate of fitness change with the extent of fitness-related variation within the same experimental populations; (2) magnitude of genomic mutation rate, to assess whether it correlated with fitness-related variation, as predicted by the mutation-selection balance hypothesis; (3) frequency-dependent selection, which affords rare genotypes an advantage. The paper concludes with a discussion of two evolutionary consequences of variability: the fixation of deleterious mutations by drift in small populations and the role of clonal interference in large ones.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London.
