Effects of precocene and methoprene application in young adult Musca autumnalis

Abstract Observations were made on the relative rates of growth among corpora allata, ovarian follicles and fat bodies in diapausing and reproductive Musca autumnalis DeGeer. Rates of corpora allata growth were greater in long-day than in short-day animals. Topically applied precocene II reduced the size of the corpora allata. Two sequential doses of precocene inhibited vitellogenesis. Topically applied methoprene produced vitellogenesis in short-day flies and inhibited development of hypertrophied fat body. This work provides evidence that Juvenile Hormone is the primary agent controlling diapause and non-diapause (vitellogenic) development in the ovaries of face flies.     

A new species of eastmanosteid arthrodire (Pisces: Placodermi) from Gogo, Western Australia

A new species of Eastmanosteus Obruchev is described from the Upper Devonian Gogo Formation of Western Australia as E. calliaspis sp. nov. It is at the pachyosteomorph level of organization having no contact between the plates of the flank and those of the ventral shield behind the pectoral fin. Well preserved material of the parasphenoid and scapulocoracoid throws further light on the structure of these elements in arthrodires. The genus Eastmanosteus is reviewed.     

Management of persons with co-occurring severe mental illness and substance use disorder: program implications

Adults with severe mental illness have extraordinarily high rates of co-occurring substance use disorders, typically around 50% or more, which adversely affect their current adjustment, course, and outcome. Separate and parallel mental health and substance abuse treatment systems do not offer interventions that are accessible, integrated, and tailored for the presence of co-occurrence. Recent integrated interventions for this population have the specific goal of ameliorating substance use disorder and the general goal of improving adjustment and quality of life. The authors overview the current research and offer guidelines related to mission and philosophy, leadership, comprehensive reorganization, training, specific programs, and quality improvement.     

A COMPARISON OF CATEGORY AND LINE SCALES UNDER VARIOUS EXPERIMENTAL PROTOCOLS

Judges were required to rate the total intensity of NaCl solutions and the sweetness of orange flavored beverages using a variety of unstructured category and line scales. Discrimination errors were noted for each type of scale. No strong differences were observed in discrimination between category and line scales although a 20-point category scale incurred fewer discrimination errors than 9-point category and line scales. Allowing judges to retaste stimuli and review and modify their scores reduced discrimination errors.     

A STUDY OF BIOETHICAL KNOWLEDGE AND PERCEPTIONS IN KOREA

This study assessed the knowledge and perception of human biological materials (HBM) and biorepositories among three study groups in South Korea. The relationship between the knowledge and the perception among different groups was also examined by using factor and regression analyses. In a self‐reporting survey of 440 respondents, the expert group was found more likely to be knowledgeable and positively perceived than the others. Four factors emerged: Sale and Consent, Flexible Use, Self‐Confidence, and Korean Bioethics and Biosafety Action restriction perception. The results indicate that those who are well aware of the existence of biobanks were more positively inclined to receive the Sale and Consent perception. As a result of the need for high quality HBMs and the use of appropriate sampling procedures for every aspect of the collection and use process, the biorepository community should pay attention to ethical, legal, and policy issues.     

The Diascia (Scrophulariaceae) window: an orientation cue for oil-collecting bees

The Diascia (Scrophulariaceae) window: an orientation cue for oil-collecting beeS. Flowers of Diascia section Racemosae are characterized by an unusual translucent 'window' at the base of the upper corolla lip which is bright yellow with maroon flecks and varies from a nearly flat to a deeply cone-shaped depression. The inner epidermal cells of the window are also variable in shape ranging from lenticular to long papillate. In contrast to the surrounding corolla which strongly reflects ultraviolet light, the window tissue is strongly ultraviolet absorptive due to the presence of ultraviolet absorbing flavonoids in the epidermal cellS. Observations in natural and experimental situations suggest that the window is used as an orientation cue by oil-collecting bees.
