Osteoglossomorph fishes are unique in possessing a specialized feeding mechanism, the tongue-bite apparatus (TBA) involving the hyoid apparatus. The TBA is associated with two unique behaviour patterns - raking and open-mouth chewing - used to disable and macerate prey. The kinematics of these two behaviours was compared in two species of knifefishes (family Notopteridae): Xenomystus nigri (Gunther, 1868) and Chitala ornata (Gray, 1831) using high-speed video (250 frames s"1). Both univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that there were significant interspecific differences in both raking and open-mouth chewing. Raking can be divided into three stages; the preparatory phase, power stroke, and recovery phase. During the power stroke posterior motion of the pectoral girdle and neurocranial elevation both appear to play a major role in prey reduction. In Xenomystus the power stroke involves significantly greater levels of neurocranial elevation (35o) and pectoral girdle motion (38% of head length; 9.5o) than that found in Chitala (neurocranial elevation 11o; pectoral girdle motion 11% of head length and 5o). Indeed, Xenomystus represents the most extreme raking behaviour of any osteoglossomorph thus far studied. Temporal displacement variables demonstrated that the power stroke in Xenomystus is significantly faster than in Chitala. Although some of the interspecific differences might be size related, these data suggest that a greater degree of difference exists in these highly specialized behaviours than previous work has demonstrated. These findings support the notion that biomechanical duplication (an additional ligament found in osteoglossomorphs) could be linked to increased functional versatility.  相似文献

The epiphytic orchids of 31 sites in Eastern, Midwestern, Western and Northern Nigeria are enumerated. The distribution of these 109 species of orchids is related to geographic location and to the environmental factors: climate, vegetation type, most common tree species. Distribution is further discussed in relation to variation within species. An hypothesis of a former more or less continuous orchid population fragmented by climatic shifts toward dryness, by erosion and land level sinkage, and by change of vegetation brought about by man, is advanced. It is suggested that, with such fragmentation, the orchids are now in a phase of rapid speciation and evolutionary development.  相似文献

Microbial‐mediated decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM) ultimately makes a considerable contribution to soil respiration, which is typically the main source of CO2 arising from terrestrial ecosystems. Despite this central role in the decomposition of SOM, few studies have been conducted on how climate change may affect the soil microbial community and, furthermore, on how possible climate‐change induced alterations in the ecology of microbial communities may affect soil CO2 emissions. Here we present the results of a seasonal study on soil microbial community structure, SOM decomposition and its temperature sensitivity in two representative Mediterranean ecosystems where precipitation/throughfall exclusion has taken place during the last 10 years. Bacterial and fungal diversity was estimated using the terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. Our results show that fungal diversity was less sensitive to seasonal changes in moisture, temperature and plant activity than bacterial diversity. On the other hand, fungal communities showed the ability to dynamically adapt throughout the seasons. Fungi also coped better with the 10 years of precipitation/throughfall exclusion compared with bacteria. The high resistance of fungal diversity to changes with respect to bacteria may open the controversy as to whether future ‘drier conditions’ for Mediterranean regions might favor fungal dominated microbial communities. Finally, our results indicate that the fungal community exerted a strong influence over the temporal and spatial variability of SOM decomposition and its sensitivity to temperature. The results, therefore, highlight the important role of fungi in the decomposition of terrestrial SOM, especially under the harsh environmental conditions of Mediterranean ecosystems, for which models predict even drier conditions in the future.  相似文献

Background

CCN2, (a.k.a. connective tissue growth factor and CTGF) has emerged as a regulator of cell migration. While the importance of CCN2 for the fibrotic process in wound healing has been well studied, the effect of CCN2 on keratinocyte function is not well understood. In this study, we investigated the mechanism behind CCN2-driven keratinocyte adhesion and migration.Materials and methods: Adhesion assays were performed by coating wells with 10 μg/ml fibronectin (FN) or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). Keratinocytes were seeded in the presence or absence of 200 ng/ml CCN2, 5 mmol/l ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, 10 mmol/l cations, 500 μl arginine–glycine–aspartic acid (RGD), 500 μM arginine–glycine–glutamate–serine (RGES), and 10 μg/ml anti-integrin blocking antibodies. Migration studies were performed using a modified Boyden chamber assay. Quantitative PCR was used to study the effect of CCN2 on integrin subunit mRNA expression. To block intracellular pathways, keratinocytes were pretreated with 20 μM PD98059 (MEK-1 inhibitor) or 20 μM PF573228 (FAK inhibitor) for 60 min prior the addition of CCN2. Western blot was used to measure CCN2, p-ERK1/2, and ERK1/2.Results: CCN2 enhanced keratinocyte adhesion to fibronectin via integrin α5β1. The addition of anti-integrin α5β1 antibodies reduced CCN2-mediated keratinocyte migration. In addition, CCN2 regulated mRNA and protein expression of integrin subunits α5 and β1. CCN2 activated the FAK-MAPK signaling pathway, and pretreatment with MEK1-specific inhibitor PD98059 markedly reduced CCN2-induced keratinocyte migration.Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that CCN2 enhances keratinocyte adhesion and migration through integrin α5β1 and activation of the FAK-MAPK signaling cascade.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Department of Wildlife Sciences, New Mexico State University, and the New Mexico Wild Turkey Federation have developed a personal computer system for distinguishing individual male wild turkeys. The system determines census and distribution data for the State endangered subspecies of Gould's wild turkey Meleagris gallopavo mexicana. Since the bird is endangered, more conventional means such as capture, tagging and telemetry are not allowed. Programming provides software for acquisition of data, production of spectrograms and oscillograms, cross correlation and auto correlation and a data management capability. During the spring mating seasons of 1987 and 1988 field recordings were made of gobbling in a limited area of SW New Mexico. The data was processed by the computer and revealed a total of 9 recorded individual gobblers for 1987 and 11 for 1988. It also showed that 4 of the birds recorded in 1987 were also recorded in 1988, and movement data ranged from 1.6 to 11.2 kilometers. The system has proven to be a valuable tool in determining census data and movement information on the male Gould's wild turkey in SW New Mexico. Plans for future use are for the differentiation of subspecies, identification of individual females and the analysis of specific turkey calls.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. We investigated mechanisms causing predator–predator interference between fourth instar Hippodamia convergens larvae foraging for pea aphids on pea plants, Pisum sativum , with a wild-type wax bloom, and the lack of such interference between larvae foraging on pea plants with a reduced-wax bloom caused by the single gene mutation wel .
2. Observations showed that behavioural interactions between larvae were not affected by wax phenotype. Specifically, larvae did not encounter one another more frequently on normal-wax peas as may have been predicted because reduced ability by coccinellids to attach to normal-wax plant surfaces could restrict them to foraging on only some parts of these plants.
3. In a controlled bioassay on normal-wax peas, H. convergens larvae avoided leaflets previously exposed to another larva. On reduced-wax peas, this effect was not detected.
4. In microcosm experiments, inter-predator interference in terms of prey consumption occurred on normal-wax peas, but not on reduced-wax peas. The interference on normal-wax peas occurred whether two H. convergens larvae were placed on a pea aphid-infested, normal-wax plant simultaneously or sequentially.
5. We conclude that the observed inter-predator interference is not as a result of direct physical contact, but rather arises because of (i) inhibition of foraging by chemical trails left by other larvae, (ii) the inability of larvae to access portions of the normal-wax plants creating aphid refugia, or (iii) a combination of these factors.  相似文献
