Migratory species may be especially sensitive to climate change because their lifecycles are affected by dynamic ecological processes operating at global spatial scales. Insight into environmental effects upon en route decisions by migrants can therefore be a critical first step toward assessing their vulnerability to future climatic shifts. We extracted behaviour-related parameters from a recent formulation of multistate mark–recapture models, and used them to evaluate the importance of variation in local weather and broad-scale climate to decisions made by autumn passerine migrants at a coastal stopover site in Atlantic Canada. We found dramatic interannual fluctuations in the proportion of migrants that were transient (departing within a day of arrival), with annual average values ranging from 24% to 96% over the years 1996–2007. However, the relationships of stopover behaviour (transience and departure probability) to local weather (wind and precipitation) and to regional climatic fluctuations were similar across three distinct species groups and for birds of different fuel-loads, indicating the potential for both immediate (day-to-day) and long-term environmental influences (spanning several seasons). This cross-scale approach contributes valuable information toward the conservation of migrants in the face of a changing climate by (i) quantifying environmental influences on stopover behaviour in broad temporal and geographic contexts, and (ii) demonstrating largely parallel interannual variation in stopover site-use among birds with contrasting migratory timing and strategies. 相似文献

Dromaeosauridae is the sister taxon of the Avialae; thus, an investigation of dromaeosaur shoulder girdle musculature and forelimb function provides substantial information regarding changes in the size and performance of the theropod shoulder girdle musculature leading to avian powered flight. Twenty-two shoulder girdle muscles were reconstructed for the dromaeosaurid shoulder apparatus, based on phylogenetic inference, which involves the comparison of lepidosaurian, crocodilian and avian musculature, and extrapolatory inference, which involves a secondary comparison with functional analogues of theropods. In addition to these comparative methodologies, osteological correlates of shoulder musculature preserved in eumaniraptorans are identified, and comparisons with those of extant archosaurs allow these muscles to be definitively inferred in dromaeosaurids. THE life cycle of certain pathogenic African trypanosomes is characterized by a striking change in the mechanism of oxidative reactions on which the aerobic metabolism of the organism depends. Vertebrate bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei group trypanosomes apparently depend on a non-mitochondrial, cyanide-insensitive α-glycerophosphate oxidase system1. Cells which become established when trypanosomes are grown in culture resemble those found in the insect vector. Early reports on the metabolism of these culture forms described a cyanide-sensitive terminal respiration2, associated with the presence of a complex mitochondrial network3,4 and cytochrome pigments2,5,6. Hydraulic architecture was studied in shrub species differing in rooting depth in a cold desert in Southern Argentina. All species exhibited strong hydraulic segmentation between leaves, stems and roots with leaves being the most vulnerable part of the hydraulic pathway. Two types of safety margins describing the degree of conservation of the hydraulic integrity were used: the difference between minimum stem or leaf water potential (Ψ) and the Ψ at which stem or leaf hydraulic function was reduced by 50% (Ψ – Ψ50), and the difference between leaf and stem Ψ50. Leaf Ψ50 – stem Ψ50 increased with decreasing rooting depth. Large diurnal decreases in root‐specific hydraulic conductivity suggested high root vulnerability to embolism across all species. Although stem Ψ50 became more negative with decreasing species‐specific Ψsoil and minimum stem Ψ, leaf Ψ50 was independent of Ψ and minimum leaf Ψ. Species with embolism‐resistant stems also had higher maximum stem hydraulic conductivity. Safety margins for stems were >2.1 MPa, whereas those for leaves were negative or only slightly positive. Leaves acted as safety valves to protect the integrity of the upstream hydraulic pathway, whereas embolism in lateral roots may help to decouple portions of the plant from the impact of drier soil layers. 相似文献

We performed a comprehensive comparative study of functional traits in coexisting alien and native woody species in order to examine the strategies related to resource use and dispersion underlying alien success in mountain Chaco woodlands of central Argentina. Our approach integrated seemingly contrasting pieces of evidence in the region. We specifically assessed whether (i) the ‘functional acquisitive trend’ previously observed along a broad environmental gradient accounts for woody alien naturalization when considering a single mesic ecosystem; or (ii) more than one trait syndrome is important among alien species, which would be more in line with the context‐dependent nature of biological invasions at a local scale. Fifteen vegetative and regenerative traits were measured on the most common 14 native and 11 alien woody species. We compared the attributes of (i) native and alien species and (ii) between native species and two contrasting groups of alien species identified in the previous analysis. The overall trait comparison (i) showed that, in terms of vegetative attributes, woody alien species tend to be on average more acquisitive than native species. However, (ii) two contrasting syndromes were revealed among alien species: a group of seven deciduous species with acquisitive attributes; and a group of four evergreen species showing markedly more conservative attributes than the first group. The functional attributes of ‘conservative aliens’ completely overlapped with the range observed for native species, except for an exclusive dispersal phenology and a stronger tendency to clonal spread. Acquisitive aliens, in turn, proved to be beyond the range of attributes of native species, at the acquisitive extreme, as they did in previous comparisons. Despite their importance, general trends in plant functional attributes across regions and ecosystems can sometimes obscure trends at more local scales that are nevertheless important for the understanding and management of particular systems. Our study concurs with previous general trends when looking at the overall comparison between native and alien species, but unveils contrasting functional strategies among alien species when examining their attributes more closely, even within the same ecosystem. 相似文献

1. Explaining resource–diversity relationships is a long‐standing goal in ecology, and there is currently little consensus as to the relative contributions of neutral versus a variety of proposed niche‐related mechanisms. 2. The resource–diversity relationship of insect detritivores was examined in a survey of 25 small, parallel streams flowing into the Bay of Fundy in eastern Canada, with the objective of determining whether neutral processes (sampling effects) could account for the observed patterns. 3. Detritivore taxonomic richness showed a positive, but decelerating relationship with quantity of detritus. Richness also increased with catchment area and with stream permanence. 4. Species distribution patterns were significantly nested, and low resource streams (little detritus) tended to have species with large ranges (i.e. found in many or most streams). 5. Sampling effects could explain only part of the positive relationship between richness and detrital resources, but accounted for the species richness–area relationship. 6. Two mechanisms that could potentially increase niche space as resource abundance increased were rejected: there was no evidence that riparian forest diversity or beta diversity increased with detrital resources. 7. Two niche‐related mechanisms were consistent with existing data, but will require further testing. First, flood disturbance may decrease species richness by eliminating species that require benign habitat, and lowering detritus retention, producing a positive correlation between detritivore richness and resources. Second, large wood in streams located in older riparian forest may increase habitat heterogeneity (number of niches) and the retention of organic matter, again leading to a positive relationship between detritivore diversity and detrital resources. 8. It was concluded that the positive ‘productivity–diversity’ relationship for stream detritivores was most likely produced in part by sampling effects, but also by ecological processes (disturbance and succession) that simultaneously influence resource level and niche availability. 相似文献
