1. Increases in spatial heterogeneity may provide more food, create new resources or interfere with the foraging activities of a herbivore. 2. Three colonization experiments were performed in an upland stream to investigate the effects of one type of spatial heterogeneity (grooves on the substratum) on the relationship between an abundant herbivore, Agapetus monticolus (Banks, Trichoptera), and the epilithon on which it feeds. 3. The results indicate that grooves do not provide any different resources or interfere with the foraging activities of A. monticolus, but may increase food abundance, although the effect of grooves on food abundance appears to vary temporally. 4. Temporal variation in the effects of microspatial complexity raises the possibility that its importance to the community may be over- or underestimated unless experiments are designed to incorporate this temporal variation.  相似文献

Abstract:  Eoproscopia martilli gen. et sp. nov. is described from the Early Cretaceous (Aptian) Crato Formation Lagerstätte of Ceará State, north-east Brazil. The new taxon is assigned to the extant family Proscopiidae and represents the first occurrence of the group in the fossil record. Eoproscopia is similar to crown group proscopiids in its stick-like habitus, elongate prothorax and absence of the cryptopleuron, but differs in the presence of well-developed wings, the short head with a small, simple fastigium, the prothoracic legs being inserted near the posterior margin of the prothorax, and the absence of spines on the metathoracic tibiae. The discovery of Eoproscopia extends the geological range of the family by approximately 110 myr and confirms the presence of stem-group proscopiids in the Atlantic rift zone of South America during the Early Cretaceous.  相似文献

The present study tests the hypothesis that agents known to elevate the level of intracellular cyclic adenine nucleotide may direct different epithelial cells onto a pathway of epidermoid (squamous) development and differentiation. We report here that the mixture of dibutyryl cyclic AMP (dbcAMP), prostaglandins E1, E2 and B1, (PG E1, E2, B1), and papaverine (pap) enhances the rate of normal squamous cell development in organ-cultured skin of chick embryos. The three components may act synergistically to elevate the level of intracellular cyclic adenine nucleotide. We recently reported that the same group of agents induces abnormal development (squamous metaplasia) and aberrant differentiation (keratin production) in the normally cuboidal epithelium of cultured whole mammary glands of mice [1]. Thus, dbcAMP, PG E1, E2, B1, and pap are effective in enhancing normal squamous cell development and also in inducing squamous metaplasia de novo in the epithelial components of two different organs of embryonic and adult animals of two classes of vertebrates. The combined findings are suggestive that cyclic adenine nucleotide together with the prostaglandins may act generally on diverse types of epithelia to bring about squamous cell development and a differentiation marked by keratin production.  相似文献

Global average yields of the world's main food crops have increased over the past 50 years, and these yield increases have varied over time. For most crops, yields have grown significantly faster during periods of higher demand growth, and the contribution of yield growth to output growth has varied between crops. These variations reflect the range of measures available to growers to enhance yields of each crop, which are typically not fully deployed during periods of low demand growth and low relative price. This paper applies two methods using consistent, long‐term historic relationships to demonstrate that crop yield, area and price changes are not independent, and that area changes and yield changes in response to market signals are different for different crops and regions. One of these methods is used to show the expected percentages of exogenous estimates of overall demand growth that will be met by yield growth and by land use change for a range of biofuel crops. The estimated percentage of incremental output growth delivered by yield growth is 78% for EU cereals, with the remainder being met by area growth.  相似文献

1. The Ogeechee River, in south-eastern Georgia, U.S.A, is a blackwater river with an extensive floodplain that is inundated regularly during winter months. Previous studies have shown that low to moderate bacterial production rates cannot support the relatively high suspended bacteria concentrations observed (107?-108 cells ml?1), suggesting an allochthonous source of bacteria. We report the results of a combination of field and flume experiments which demonstrate that river sediments and floodplain soils are significant sources of suspended bacteria during seasonal flooding. Benthic bacteria are also entrained by normal discharges. There are sizeable fluxes of POC and DOC from river sediments and floodplain soils. 2. Bacterial, POC and DOC fluxes (14, 250, and 790 mg Cm?2 h?1, respectively) were substantial when water was percolated upward through floodplain soils. 3. Simulation of overland flow using a flume demonstrated further fluxes of bacteria and POC from floodplain soils (up to 61 and 10700 mg Cm?2h?1, respectively) and river sediments, but did not yield additional DOC from floodplain soils. 4. These laboratory results are supported by experiments in which we measured significant increases in concentrations of bacteria and DOC in a downstream direction in (i) the main river channel during a winter flood in 1986, and (ii) a floodplain slough (channel side-arm) which re-entered the main channel 800m from its initial divergence. Inputs of bacteria and DOC from the surrounding floodplain were estimated to be up to 3500 kg DOC h?1, and 4000 kg bacteria Ch?1 over a 50-km reach. 5. These previously unmeasured fluxes of organic carbon help to explain the high concentrations of suspended bacteria in the Ogeechee River.  相似文献

Two methods employing phioxine B and Bismarck brown Y followingdehydration and infiltration using a graded series of isopropylalcohol-paraffin combinations are presented: (1) a five-componentstain combination for highly differentiated plant tissues inwhich orange G is included to differentiate between the otherdyes and (2) a triple stain combination especially useful forgeneral differentiation. Both methods are uniformly successfuland result in colour-fast sections. Advantages of the isopropylalcohol technique are: diminished distortion and less hardeningof the material, ready availability, and low cost. Brief detailsof some of the stains used and their advantages are discussed.
