Within the catfish family Clariidae, species exist with different degrees of jaw adductor hypertrophy. This jaw adductor hypertrophy has been related to bite performance, in turn suggesting a link to dietary specialization. Thus, an increase in the degree of hypertrophy will likely be reflected in an increase in the amount of hard prey in the diet. In the present study, we examine the ontogenetic scaling of cranial structure and diet in a species of catfish with a moderate degree of jaw adductor hypertrophy, Clariallabes longicauda . Additionally, we investigate whether the observed changes in the morphology of the feeding system during growth are linked to changes in diet. The fish examined demonstrate a strong positively allometric growth of the jaw adductors, of head height and of maximal head width, suggesting that larger fish can feed on larger and harder prey. Dietary data confirm these hypotheses and reveal an increase in maximal prey size consumed, the proportion of large prey in the diet, and average prey hardness during ontogeny. Moreover, the observed changes in the proportion of large prey consumed and prey hardness are correlated with an increase in lower jaw width and maximal head width, respectively. An increase in the amount of evasive prey in the diet with fish size is correlated with an increase in hyoid length. A new spider cricket (Orthoptera: Gryllidae: Phalangopsinae) is described from an adult female preserved in Early Miocene (Burdigalian) amber from the Dominican Republic. Araneagryllus dylani gen. et sp. nov. represents the first fossil record of Phalangopsinae, and is assigned to the tribe Luzarini, subtribe Amphiacustina stat. nov. A cladistic analysis of Amphiacustina places Araneagryllus gen. nov. within a clade comprising Arachnopsita, Leptopedetes, Longuripes, Mayagryllus, Nemoricantor, and Prolonguripes. This clade is the sister group to a clade comprising Amphiacusta, Cantrallia, and Noctivox. The results of this analysis suggest that: (1) the common ancestor of all Amphiacustina was epigean, and was likely to have been cavicolous and/or straminicolous; (2) strict troglobitism evolved twice within Amphiacustina, once in the lineage leading to Noctivox and again in the clade comprising Mayagryllus, Arachnopsita, Longuripes, and Prolonguripes; and (3) Prolonguripes is secondarily epigean, having reverted to life above ground. The occurrence of Araneagryllus gen. nov. in amber indicates that it was not troglobitic, but was instead more likely to have been straminicolous, living on the ground and foraging amongst leaf litter. Araneagryllus gen. nov. possesses a number of characters that are usually considered to be adaptive to a troglobitic life history, suggesting that many so‐called troglobiomorphies are not adaptations to life in caves, but are instead likely to have been exaptive. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 158 , 56–65.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The teiid lizard Ameiva ameiva praesignis in Panama is parasitized by 2 species of Plasmodium: P. cnemidophori Carini and P. diminutivum sp. n. The Panamanian strain of P. cnemidophori has thick macrogametocytes which are larger than the oval microgametocytes, and schizonts which contain 42–119 nuclei. P. diminutivum is characterized by round to oval gametocytes which are usually smaller than the host cell nucleus; fan-shaped schizonts with 4–6 nuclei; and prominently vacuolated young stages, with a thick band of chromatin along the periphery of the vacuole.  相似文献

  • 1 The metapopulation metaphor is increasingly used to explain the spatial dynamics of animal populations. However, metapopulation structure is difficult to identify in long‐lived species that are widely distributed in stochastic environments, where they can resist extinctions. The literature on mammals may not provide supporting evidence for classic metapopulation dynamics, which call for the availability of discrete habitat patches, asynchrony in local population dynamics, evidence for extinction and colonization processes, and dispersal between local populations.
  • 2 Empirical evidence for metapopulation structure among mammals may exist when applying more lenient criteria. To meet these criteria, mammals should live in landscapes as discrete local breeding populations, and their demography should be asynchronous.
  • 3 We examined the literature for empirical evidence in support of the classical criteria set by Hanski (1999 ), and for the more lenient subset of criteria proposed by Elmhagen & Angerbjörn (2001 ). We suggest circumstances where metapopulation theory could be important in understanding population processes in mammals of different body sizes.
  • 4 The patchy distribution of large (>100 kg) mammals and dispersal often motivate inferences in support of a metapopulation structure. Published studies seldom address the full suite of classical criteria. However, studies on small mammals are more likely to record classic metapopulation criteria than those on large mammals. The slow turnover rate that is typical for medium‐sized and large mammals apparently makes it difficult to identify a metapopulation structure during studies of short duration.
  • 5 To identify a metapopulation structure, studies should combine the criteria set by Hanski (1999 ) and Elmhagen & Angerbjörn (2001 ). Mammals frequently live in fragmented landscapes, and processes involved in the maintenance of a metapopulation structure should be considered in conservation planning and management.

ABSTRACT

Whales, dolphins and porpoises, 80 species of entirely aquatic mammals, constitute the order Cetacea. In the early Eocene, about 55 to 60 million years ago according to paleontologists, distant ancestors of modern cetaceans left land for aquatic life. Cetaceans are diverse; average adult size of cetacean species varies by 1000 to 2000 times. Small and large species occupy all oceans from the equator to the polar seas, some forms inhabit rivers and four species live only in fresh water.

Cetaceans are born in water and spend their entire lives in the aquatic medium. There is a great gap in knowledge about hearing in most cetacean species and especially about how noise and high-intensity sound may affect all cetaceans and other mammals underwater. Studies of temporary threshold shift (TTS) and occupational noise exposure in human divers suggest a cautious approach to cetacean noise exposure until data on cetacean TTS can give us some idea of the dynamic range of cetacean ears.  相似文献

We examined numbers of plant species and individuals relative to land use in an agricultural settlement in the Brazilian Amazon. Land uses were forest, cropped after forest, fallows, cropped after fallow, and pasture. These corresponded roughly to farmers' land-use changes over time. Numbers of species and diversity indices were generally highest in forest, but we found quite similar values in older fallows as a result of both survival/re-establishment of forest species and emergence of plants not encountered in forest. The dominant species in fallows, however, were different from those in forest. Lands cropped using slash-and-burn maintained moderate numbers of species–both forest and non-forest. Trends in plant density (individuals per unit ground area) on cropped lands were mainly related to invasion of weedy species (increasing in time after slash-and-burn) and shifts in crop species (replacement of small-sized rice by larger-sized maize and cassava). Useful forest plants (e.g. for construction purposes, food and medicines) decreased with land conversion, although new species also appeared. The fewest species, tree species, and useful plants, and the greatest losses of the forest flora, were encountered in pastures. Consequently, conversion to pasture rather than slash-and-burn agriculture per se led to high biodiversity loss.  相似文献

Abstract:  A new species of palaeoleontid neuropteran Baisopardus cryptohymen sp. nov. is described. The holotype is remarkable for the preservation of fine body structures and colour patterning on all of its four wings. The specimen is nearly complete, lacking only the abdomen and the right mesothoracic leg, and is preserved as a black-brown compression in laminated limestone of the Nova Olinda Member, Crato Formation (late Aptian, Early Cretaceous), Ceará, Brazil. The colour pattern of the forewings comprises a series of dark brown bands that overlap with colourless bands of the hindwings; it produced a cryptic colour pattern when the wings were folded.  相似文献

Forests play a critical role in the global carbon cycle, being considered an important and continuing carbon sink. However, the response of carbon sequestration in forests to global climate change remains a major uncertainty, with a particularly poor understanding of the origins and environmental responses of soil CO2 efflux. For example, despite their large biomass, the contribution of ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi to forest soil CO2 efflux and responses to changes in environmental drivers has, to date, not been quantified in the field. Their activity is often simplistically included in the ‘autotrophic’ root respiration term. We set up a multiplexed continuous soil respiration measurement system in a young Lodgepole pine forest, using a mycorrhizal mesh collar design, to monitor the three main soil CO2 efflux components: root, extraradical mycorrhizal hyphal, and soil heterotrophic respiration. Mycorrhizal hyphal respiration increased during the first month after collar insertion and thereafter remained remarkably stable. During autumn the soil CO2 flux components could be divided into ∼60% soil heterotrophic, ∼25% EM hyphal, and ∼15% root fluxes. Thus the extraradical EM mycelium can contribute substantially more to soil CO2 flux than do roots. While EM hyphal respiration responded strongly to reductions in soil moisture and appeared to be highly dependent on assimilate supply, it did not responded directly to changes in soil temperature. It was mainly the soil heterotrophic flux component that caused the commonly observed exponential relationship with temperature. Our results strongly suggest that accurate modelling of soil respiration, particularly in forest ecosystems, needs to explicitly consider the mycorrhizal mycelium and its dynamic response to specific environmental factors. Moreover, we propose that in forest ecosystems the mycorrhizal CO2 flux component represents an overflow ‘CO2 tap’ through which surplus plant carbon may be returned directly to the atmosphere, thus limiting expected carbon sequestration from trees under elevated CO2.  相似文献

Abstract: We developed a noninvasive method to estimate reproductive and survival parameters for free-ranging African savannah elephants (Loxodonta africana africana) and used these to estimate finite population growth rates. We used published data from 2 populations with known growth rates and birth and survival histories to validate our technique. Based on body measurements, our method yielded estimates of age at first and last calving, calving interval, and age-specific survival rates that were similar to those determined during long-term studies at both Addo Elephant National Park and Amboseli National Park. Our technique generated population data required to estimate population growth rates. The method may be particularly useful where censuses yield imprecise estimates or where long-term population data are unavailable. (JOURNAL OF WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT 72(3):822–829; 2008)  相似文献
