Titi monkeys (Callicebus cupreus) are a monogamous, New World primate. Adult pair‐mates form a bidirectional social bond and offspring form a selective unidirectional bond to their father. Some of the neurobiology involved in social bonds and maternal behavior is similar to the neural circuitry involved in nonsocial reward. Due to these overlapping mechanisms, social states may affect responses to external rewarding stimuli. We sought to determine whether having a social attachment, and/or being in the presence of that attachment figure, can affect an individual's response to a rewarding stimulus. In addition, we compared affiliative bonds between pair‐mates to those between offspring and fathers. Eighteen adult male titi monkeys were either living alone (Lone), with a female pair‐mate (Paired), or with the natal group (Natal; N = 6/condition). Each individual went through eight 30‐min preference tests for a sweet substance, Tang. For Paired and Natal males, half of the test sessions were with their attachment figure and half were alone. Lone males were always tested alone. Preference scores for Tang, time spent drinking, affiliative, and arousal behaviors were measured. Paired and Natal males emitted significantly more isolation peeps and locomoted more when tested alone compared to when tested with their attachment figure, and paired males engaged in more affiliative behavior than Natal males. Lone males engaged in significantly more behaviors indicative of behavioral arousal such as locomotion and piloerection compared to Paired and Natal males. Finally, Paired males drank significantly more Tang and had a significantly greater preference for Tang compared to Lone and Natal males. These results indicate that offspring undergo a behavioral separation response upon separation from their father that persists into adulthood, Lone males are more behaviorally reactive, and that living with an attachment figure and the type of attachment relationship result in different responses to a rewarding sweet stimulus. Large protein crystals were located in the leaf and stem trichomesof Solanum tuberosum L. and Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. Inpotato the crystals ranged from 1.05 to 4.5 µm (average2.3 µm) on a side and in tomato they ranged from 1.16to 3.5 µm (average 2.7 µm) on a side. The proteinnature of the crystals was determined by histochemical stainingwith Coumassie brilliant blue R250 and aniline blue black. Thecrystalline structure of the inclusions was observed in ultrathinsections using electron microscopy. In potato, in cleared areasof the cytoplasm, ribosomes were observed scattered among proteinfilaments. The filaments were approximately 7 nm in diameter.Morphologically similar crystals were observed in the tomatotrichomes but the protein filaments were smaller (approximately4 nm in diameter). Protein crystals were also observed in palisadeand spongy parenchyma and epidermal leaf cells in tomato. Along the coast of Somerset, the numbers of animal and plant species progressively decline from west to east. Changes in zonation patterns thus reflect a decrease in species richness as well as the direct influences of increasing tidal range and turbidity. The patterns are also complicated by the differing rock types: quartzite to the west, limestone to the northeast with softer marls and shales inbetween. The overall appearance of some shores has changed in recent years as a result of fucoid responses to hot summers and cold winters. This has greatly influenced community structure. In contrast to the Quoddy Region (Bay of Fundy), Ascophyllum nodosum is confined to sheltered sites whilst Nucella lapillus (together with several other gastropods) becomes increasingly restricted to lower levels – especially where a fucoid canopy is present.  相似文献

1. Additions of large wood are being used to restore streams that have been subjected to channelization, wood removal or riparian timber harvest. This added wood potentially increases channel stability, habitat complexity and organic matter retention and improves habitat and productivity of higher trophic levels. However, few stream restorations monitor restoration effectiveness after project completion. 2. We added 25 aspen logs (each 2.5 m length × 0.5 m diameter) to 100‐m reaches of each of three forested headwater streams in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, U.S.A. These wood‐poor streams drain forests that were completely harvested of timber over a century ago and have been selectively logged for the past 50–60 years. An upstream unmanipulateds 100‐m reach in each stream served as the control. 3. We evaluated responses in organic matter processing by measuring red maple leaf decomposition 1 year before and 2 years after wood addition. We also quantified coarse organic matter standing stocks in the main channel and in debris accumulations associated with large wood. In response to wood addition, we predicted both organic matter standing stocks and leaf decomposition rates would increase, thereby enhancing resource availability to higher trophic levels. 4. Leaf decomposition rates did not change following wood addition. Temporal variation in rates among streams was mostly explained by differences in degree days, water velocity, scour/burial and water column inorganic nitrogen concentrations, but not large wood. Variation within streams across years was explained by differences in degree days, water velocity and shredder biomass. 5. Contrary to our prediction, organic matter standing stocks did not increase significantly at the reach scale. However, the experimentally added wood retained c. 4% of total annual coarse benthic organic matter (CBOM) in the first year and an additional c. 15% in the second year, suggesting accumulation over time in the manipulated reaches. The CBOM held by the new logs may be more biologically available because it is less susceptible to burial and transport than material in the streambed. 6. Some shredding macroinvertebrates responded to changes caused by the wood additions. In particular, the common caddisfly shredder, Lepidostoma sp., increased in abundance in leaf bags following wood addition, whereas the biomass of the winter stoneflies, Capniidae, declined in the first year. 7. Considerable funds are spent to restore in‐stream habitat, but few restorations are monitored, particularly over long periods (>5 years). Our results show that longer‐term monitoring is needed to determine the efficacy of these restorations on ecosystem function; organic matter decomposition in our low‐gradient streams did not respond to a substantial increase in large wood after 2 years.  相似文献

1. We measured responses in macroinvertebrate secondary production after large wood additions to three forested headwater streams in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. These streams had fine‐grained sediments and low retention capacity due to low amounts of in‐channel wood from a legacy of past logging. We predicted that wood addition would increase macroinvertebrate secondary production by increasing exposed coarse substrate and retention of organic matter. 2. Large wood (25 logs) was added haphazardly to a 100‐m reach in each stream, and a 100‐m upstream reach served as control; each reach was sampled monthly, 1 year before and 2 years after wood addition (i.e. BACI design). Macroinvertebrate secondary production was measured 1 year after wood addition in two habitat types: inorganic sediments of the main channel and debris accumulations of leaf litter and small wood. 3. Overall macroinvertebrate production did not change significantly because each stream responded differently to wood addition. Production increased by 22% in the main‐channel of one stream, and showed insignificant changes in the other two streams compared to values before wood addition. Changes in main‐channel macroinvertebrate production were related to small changes in substrate composition, which probably affected habitat and periphyton abundance. Macroinvertebrate production was much greater in debris accumulations than in the main‐channel, indicating the potential for increased retention of leaf litter to increase overall macroinvertebrate production, especially in autumn. 4. Surrounding land use, substrate composition, temperature and method of log placement are variables that interact to influence the response of stream biota to wood additions. In most studies, wood additions occur in altered catchments, are rarely monitored, and secondary production is not a common metric. Our results suggest that the time required for measurable changes in geomorphology, organic matter retention, or invertebrate production is likely to take years to achieve, so monitoring should span more than 5 years, and ecosystem metrics, such as macroinvertebrate secondary production, should be incorporated into restoration monitoring programs.  相似文献

Twenty-four strains of anaerobic fusiform-shaped bacteria were isolated from the caecum of conventional mice. Ten of the isolates belonged to the genus Clostridium , nine to Fusobacterium and five to Bacteroides. The clostridia were put into eight biotypes on the basis of their ability to: hydrolyze mucin and esculin; produce indole and hydrogen; utilize pyruvate, and ferment arabinose, cellobiose, fructose, glucose, galactose, maltose, mannose and N-acetylglucosamine and on the acid end-products of such fermentations. The fusobacteria were assigned to six biotypes based on their ability to hydrolyze casein, mucin and starch, and to ferment arabinose, lactose, maltose and N-acetylglucosamine. Each of the bacteroides was deemed to be a separate biotype because of the differences in their ability to hydrolyze casein and starch, grow in bile medium, utilize pyruvate, and to ferment arabinose, maltose, xylan and N-acetylglucosamine. Five of the Fusobacterium isolates resembled F. russii. The remaining 19 isolates did not resemble previously described species of anaerobic bacteria.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. DNA is eliminated during development of the somatic MACronucleus from the germinal MICronucleus in the ciliated protozoan, Tetrahymena thermophila. Facultatively persistent sequences are a class of sequences that persist in the MAC DNA of some cell lines but are eliminated from the MAC DNA of other cell lines. One cloned MAC fragment contains a persistent sequence as well as sequences normally retained in the MAC. When this cloned fragment was used to construct MAC restriction maps of this region in cell lines whose MAC DNAs do, or do not, contain the persistent sequence, extensive variation in the map flanking this region was observed. The different DNA rearrangements of this MIC segment are epigenetically determined during or soon after MAC development. Moreover, different rearrangements may occur among the 45 copies of this MIC segment as a MAC is formed, resulting in polymorphisms that are later resolved by phenotypic assortment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The main proleg retractor muscle (y) of Antheraea pernyi Guer. (Lepidoptera, Saturniidae) larvae consists of three layers of fibres. The innermost layer of fibres is dually innervated. Cobalt backfills of the two motor neurones, in nerve 2d, showed the somata to be situated ventrally and anteriorly in the same segmental ganglion, ipsilateral to the filled nerve. Intramuscular microelectrode recordings showed excitatory junction potentials (EJPs) of two distinct amplitudes, both of which were relatively slow. However, 26% of the larger amplitude EJPs had an active membrane response. The EJPs and mechanical responses both summated at low stimulation frequencies. Large EJPs resulted in a much greater development of tension than small ones. Extracellular stimulation of nerve lbiii modulated peak tension and peak rate of relaxation.  相似文献
