The effectiveness of the synthetic pyrethroids deltamethrin and lambda-cyhal-othrin in preventing (i) aphid colonisation of four cowpea cultivars with different levels of aphid resistance and (ii) the introduction and subsequent spread of cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus and cucumber mosaic virus was investigated under tropical field conditions. Sprays of these pyrethroids eight days apart prevent aphid colonisation and within crop spread of virus by the colonising Aphis craccivora. However, neither deltamethrin nor lambda-cyhalothrin prevented the initial introduction of virus into the cowpea crop and, when incoming alate incidence was high, virus incidence was higher in the sprayed than in the unsprayed plots. In addition, the degree of aphid resistance of each cultivar affected secondary virus spread within the crop, with greatest spread in the most resistant cultivar.  相似文献

About 6800 groundnut germplasm accessions originating from South America, Africa, and Asia were evaluated for resistance to rosette disease using an infector row technique between the 1990/91 and 1996/97 growing seasons. Of these, 116 germplasm accessions, including 15 short-duration Spanish types, have shown high levels of resistance to rosette disease. A high percentage of these resistant accessions were from West Africa and a few were from Asia and southern Africa. Only one out of 1400 accessions from South America showed resistance to rosette disease. All disease-resistant accessions were susceptible to groundnut rosette assistor virus. This is the first report to identify sources of resistance to rosette disease in groundnut germplasm from Asia and South America. These additional sources of resistance provide an opportunity to broaden the genetic base of resistance to rosette disease. The origins of rosette resistance in groundnut are discussed.  相似文献

The indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) concentration in leaves and stamens of the normal and a temperature-sensitive male sterile ‘stamenless-2′ (sl-2/sl-2) mutant of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), grown under three temperature conditions, was measured by gas chromatography — mass spectrometry — selected ion monitoring (GC-MS-SIM) and by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA). At low (LTR, 18°C day/15°C night), intermediate (ITR, 23°C day/18°C night), and high temperatures (HTR, 28°C day/23°C night), the mutant leaves had approximately 10 to 20 times higher IAA concentrations, respectively, than the normal leaves under these temperature regimes. Similarly, the stamens of mutant flowers had approximately five and eight times higher IAA concentration at ITR and HTR, respectively, than the normal flowers. In the low temperature reverted mutant stamens, however, the level of IAA was similar to that in normal stamens. Also, with an increase in temperature, there was an increase in the level of IAA in the leaves and stamens of mutant plants. However, different temperatures had no appreciable effect on the IAA content of leaves and stamens of normal plants. It is suggested that the high IAA content in leaves and stamens of the stamenless-2 mutant is one of the factors associated with male sterility and carpellization of stamens in this mutant.  相似文献

The pressure-volume technique was employed to compare waterrelations and moisture stress-induced osmotic adjustment ofPeriwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) cv. Pink (PC), Oscillatus (REC)and White (WC). Leaf water potential (w), osmotic potential(s), turgor potential (p), bulk modulus of elasticity (), boundwater (RWCw) and leaf hydration (H), were estimated by exposingthe plants to a drying cycle during which well watered plantswere dehydrated to zero turgor, and then irrigated. Osmoticadjustment (w 100) was calculated by comparing a at full hydration(a 100) in stressed plants after recovery, with a 100 in controlplants. Values of 2100 were 0.76, 0.33 and 0.11 MPa in cv. PC,REC and WC, respectively. Maintenance of p at lower 3 and relativeleaf water content (RWC) in prestressed PC was attributableto a higher alkaloid content and greater leaf cell wall elasticity.RWCW was plotted against p to determine its contribution tohydration maintenance at lower p. Genotype PC showed greaterRWCw at lower p compared with REC and WC. The present studyhas demonstrated that there are cultivar differences in alkaloidaccumulation and water relations in acclimated plants and thatthe relative ranking for drought resistance within periwinkleappeared to correspond with the changes in osmotic properties. The partitioning and utilization of carbon (C) and nitrogen(N) in nodulated roots and nodules of chickpea (Cicer arietinumL.) was studied at two moisture levels at 10-d intervals 40–140d after sowing (DAS). More C was used in respiration and lessin growth of nodulated roots and nodules under water stresscompared to controls during all growth stages except at theearly vegetative stage. Similarly, less nitrogen was investedin dry matter of both nodules and nodulated roots under stress,except during the vegetative stage where more nitrogen was used.Calculated over the entire growth period, as much as 14 and20% of the total nitrogen and 3 and 4% of the total carbon fixedby the plant was lost to the rooting medium under controlledand stressed conditions, respectively. The efficiency of nitrogen fixation with respect to net C utilizationwas maximal during seed filling under both control and stressconditions However, the efficiency of nitrogen fixation wasalways greater under drier conditions. The biomass and net primary productivity (NPP) of 2- to 8-year-oldplantations of Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. (= E. hybrid) growingin the tarai (a level area of superabundant water) region ofCentral Himalaya were estimated. Allometric equations for allthe above-ground and below-ground components of trees and shrubswere developed for each stand. Understorey, forest floor biomassand litter fall were also estimated from stands. Shrubs appearedfirst at 5-year-old plantation. The biomass of vegetation, forestfloor littermass, tree litter fall and net primary productivity(NPP) of trees and shrubs increased with the increase in plantationage, whereas herb biomass and NPP significantly (P < 0·01)decreased with the increase in plantation age. The total plantationbiomass increased from 7·7 t ha–1 in the 2-year-oldto 126·7 t ha–1 in the 8-year-old plantation andNPP from 8·6 t ha–1 year–1 in the 2-year-oldto 23·4 t ha–1 year–1 in the 8-year-old plantation.The biomass accumulation ratio ranged from 0·81 to 5·93. This paper deals with nutrient dynamics in 2- to 8-year-oldplantations of Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. previously investigatedfor dry matter dynamics. The nutrient concentrations changedin the order: herb > shrub > tree. The nutrient concentrationsin the different components of these vegetation types also decreasedwith plantation age. The nutrient content in trees and shrubsincreased and in herbs it decreased with increase in plantationage. The uptake of nutrients by vegetation and also by componentswith or without adjustment for retranslocation, has been calculatedseparately. Turnover time for different nutrients ranged between1.05 and 1.35 years. Compartmental models for nutrient dynamicshave been developed to represent the distribution of nutrientcontents and net annual fluxes within the system. SYNOPSIS. The erythrocytic stages of Plasmodium gallinaceum in chicken embryos injected with parasitized blood either from a syringe-passaged infection in chickens or from a chicken infected with sporozoites, were characterized by abnormal structure. Particularly evident were large, unstained vacuoles within the cytoplasm; these occurred with greatest frequency in schizonts. The presence of myelin bodies within these vacuoles was revealed by transmission electron microscopy; abnormal cytokinesis and aberrant merozoites provided additional evidence of the parasite's inability to develop naturally within the milieu of the embryonic erythrocytes. Fifty-five passages were necessary to restore normal structure of the parasites in embryos, while only 5 passages were required for such restoration in neonate chicks. The probable adaptation of the parasite to the proportions of hemoglobin of the adult chicken may be responsible for the abnormal growth in the immature host.  相似文献

Excised rice leaves (Oryza sativa L. cv. Ratna) werefloated on a 10–3M solution of benzirnidazole under dark or continuous red light. Compared to the water control a degradation of chlorophyll, protein, RNA, DNA and a decrease in the activity of alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase was delayed at the same time as an increase of α-amino nitrogen and the activity of acid inorganic pyrophosphatase occurred, Benzimidazole was more effective under red light than in the dark in retarding senescence. The possible role of inorganic pyrophosphatases is discussed with respect to biosynthesis during leaf senescence.  相似文献
