In species pairs able to produce fertile hybrids, the amount of introgression can be limited by the frequency of interspecific copulations. We investigated the frequency of interspecific copulations between Kviparus ater and V. contectus and the proportion of hybrid offspring of V. ater females in natural populations in northern Italy. Although there was significant assortative mating, the frequency of interspecific copulations was substantial. At sites where V. contectus was rare, 5.9% of all matings, and up to 73% of matings in which V. contectus was involved, were interspecific. At sites where both species were abundant 14.8% of all matings were interspecific. Male-male matings occurred in approximately 3% of copulations. In 1993, 12 out of 325 V. ater females collected from 10 sympatric populations and held in isolation for two to five months gave birth to 25 hybrid offspring, out of a total of 2548 offspring produced by all females. The proportion of hybrid offspring (ranging from 0 to 2.3% depending on the site) was positively related to the proportion of V. contectus in the population. Since interspecific copulations are frequent and hybrid offspring are produced in nature, we conclude that assortative mating is not an effective isolating mechanism between V. ater and V. contectus.  相似文献

Phylogeographical studies are available for a considerable number of European species, but few analyses exist for temperate species with very large and fairly continuous populations that are also absent from Northern Europe. Therefore, we studied the butterfly Maniola jurtina as a model for this group. The species has two major genetic lineages (mean genetic distance between lineages: 0.033; F CT: 0.052), most probably evolving in glacial differentiation centres in the western and eastern Mediterranean. The onset of this differentiation might have been the beginning of the last glacial stage maximum some 40 kyr bp . A hybrid zone between these two lineages exists in western Central Europe. No genetic substructures have been found within the two lineages ( F SC: 0.017) and average genetic distances are very small. Therefore, it is highly probable that postglacial expansion was of the phalanx type. There is, at most, very limited differentiation at regional and local scales. However, the genetic diversity within populations is high (means: A : 2.68; H E: 17.2%; P : 78%), as would be predicted for such a common species. Comparison of these results with a published allozyme analysis revealed a similar phylogeographical pattern, but lower genetic diversity in the latter. The possibility of carbon (C) being locked away from the atmosphere for millennia is given in hydromorphic soils. However, the water-table-dependent feedback from soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition to the climate system is less clear. At least three greenhouse gases are produced: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). These gases show emission peaks at different water table positions and have different global warming potentials (GWP), for example a factor of 23 for CH4 and 296 for N2O as compared with the equivalent mass of CO2 on a 100-year time horizon. This review of available annual data on all three gases revealed that the radiative forcing effect of SOM decomposition is principally dictated by CO2 despite its low GWP. Anaerobic SOM decomposition generally has a lower potential feedback to the climatic system than aerobic SOM decomposition. Concrete values are constrained by a lack of data from tropical and subarctic regions. Furthermore, data on N2O and on plant effects are generally rare. However, there is a clear latitudinal differentiation for the GWP of soils under anaerobic conditions compared with aerobic conditions when looking at CO2 and CH4: in the tropical and temperate regions, the anaerobic GWP showed a range of 25–60% of the aerobic value, but values varied between 80% and 110% in the boreal zone. Hence, particularly in the vulnerable boreal zone, the feedback from ecosystems to climate change will highly depend on plant responses to changing water tables at elevated temperatures.  相似文献

Since its introduction into the analysis of foodstuffs, sensory analysis has been applied in several contexts. This work seeks to widen the field of sensory analysis to include ornamental plants and to characterize their esthetic quality. Using the rosebush as a plant model, an attribute generation protocol is proposed in order to develop a conventional profile of such products. Further to statistical treatments aiming to verify the unambiguity, discrimination and independence of these attributes, a reduced list of 18 attributes has been set up. These attributes make up the very core of the conventional profiling studies currently undertaken .

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS


The generation of a list of attributes that is not too long, in order to describe plants as exhaustively as possible, is one of the first steps of extending sensory analysis methods to ornamental horticulture. This list will be used to train a panel of assessors to characterize the rosebush.
Two applications are in progress. The first application consists of evaluating the impact of nitrogen nutrition on the visual quality of the rosebush. The second has the objective of determining which characteristics influence consumer preferences.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships and biogeographical history of the tropical genus Nephrolepis, a popular ornamental fern, are investigated using plastid DNA data from three regions: rbcL, rps4 plus the rps4‐trnS intergenic spacer (IGS) and the trnG intron plus the trnGtrnR IGS. Our taxon sampling includes all but one of the 19 species of the genus. We confirm the monophyly of Nephrolepis, resolve infrageneric relationships and propose monophyly of the widespread species Nephrolepis biserrata and Nephrolepis abrupta, awaiting a denser sampling of Nephrolepis cordifolia and Nephrolepis undulata. The controversial inclusion of Nephrolepis in Lomariopsidaceae is not clearly supported. With a view to identifying synapomorphies for the clades retrieved, we reconstruct the evolution in Nephrolepis of sorus position and indusium shape. Finally, based on an estimation of divergence times and reconstruction of ancestral distributions for the genus, we propose an origin of the crown group in the Eocene in the forests of the Laurasian tropical belt, from where two main lineages would have dispersed and become isolated, one in the Neotropics and the other in Asia–Australasia. ABSTRACT. A membranous closing apparatus shuts the lorica opening in disturbed tintinnids of six genera belonging to four families. The homology of the apparatuses is investigated, using data from the literature and Mediterranean tintinnids studied in vivo and by scanning electron microscopy. Morphological and functional similarities indicate that the foldable closing apparatus is not only a synapomorphy of the genera Codonella (Codonellidae) and Dictyocysta (Dictyocystidae), as suggested 80 years ago, but also of Codonaria (Codonellidae) and Codonellopsis (Codonellopsidae). In Codonaria, Codonella, and Dictyocysta, the apparatuses merge posteriorly into membranous lorica sacs, which probably represent homologous structures. The diagnoses of these genera are improved according to the new findings. The close relationship of Codonella, Codonellopsis, and Dictyocysta is also inferred from small subunit rRNA phylogenies and the ultrastructure of the capsules. It contradicts the current lorica‐based classification of the tintinnids. The assumption that the diaphragm‐like apparatus in the genera Salpingacantha and Salpingella is not homologous to the foldable ones in the genera mentioned above is supported by molecular and cytological features.  相似文献

The correlation of the effects of vitamin K3 and dicumarol (ananti-vitamin K in pharmaceutical applications) on the transplasmamembrane electrical potential difference of maize roots withthe reduction of the artificial electron acceptors hexacyanoferrate(III) or hexabromoiridate (IV) and the concomitant enhancementof acidification of the incubation medium was investigated. Vitamin K3 depolarized the plasma membrane of Zea mays L. roots,while dicumarol had no significant effect on the membrane potential.Plants treated with vitamin K3 for 30 min followed by intenserinsing showed higher reduction of hexabromoiridate (IV) thanhexacyanoferrate (III), as well as a stimulated acidificationof the incubation medium. Depolarization of the plasma membraneby hexacyanoferrate (III) or hexabromoiridate (IV) decreasedafter an incubation with vitamin K3. Pretreatment with dicumarolcaused an inhibition of hexacyanoferrate (III) reduction andmedium acidification as well as depolarization by K3. The reductionof hexabromoiridate (IV) was not affected by dicumarol pretreatment.The proton secretion associated with the reduction was slightlylowered. According to our results, it seems possible that vitaminK3 acts as an electron acceptor for the plasmalemma electrontransport system of maize roots whereas dicumarol appears toinhibit electron and proton transport. Canada's forests play an important role in the global carbon (C) cycle because of their large and dynamic C stocks. Detailed monitoring of C exchange between forests and the atmosphere and improved understanding of the processes that affect the net ecosystem exchange of C are needed to improve our understanding of the terrestrial C budget. We estimated the C budget of Canada's 2.3 × 106 km2 managed forests from 1990 to 2008 using an empirical modelling approach driven by detailed forestry datasets. We estimated that average net primary production (NPP) during this period was 809 ± 5 Tg C yr?1 (352 g C m?2 yr?1) and net ecosystem production (NEP) was 71 ± 9 Tg C yr?1 (31 g C m?2 yr?1). Harvesting transferred 45 ± 4 Tg C yr?1 out of the ecosystem and 45 ± 4 Tg C yr?1 within the ecosystem (from living biomass to dead organic matter pools). Fires released 23 ± 16 Tg C yr?1 directly to the atmosphere, and fires, insects and other natural disturbances transferred 52 ± 41 Tg C yr?1 from biomass to dead organic matter pools, from where C will gradually be released through decomposition. Net biome production (NBP) was only 2 ± 20 Tg C yr?1 (1 g C m?2 yr?1); the low C sequestration ratio (NBP/NPP=0.3%) is attributed to the high average age of Canada's managed forests and the impact of natural disturbances. Although net losses of ecosystem C occurred during several years due to large fires and widespread bark beetle outbreak, Canada's managed forests were a sink for atmospheric CO2 in all years, with an uptake of 50 ± 18 Tg C yr?1 [net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2=?22 g C m?2 yr?1].  相似文献

Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) is a natural enemy of pest mites used worldwide in many crops. Its correct identification is thus essential to ensure biological control success. The present study aimed to characterize molecular and morphological intraspecific variations for assisting in the diagnosis of the species and to build baseline information about expected variations within a commercially important phytoseiid species. Morphological and molecular [12S rRNA, cytochrome b mitochondrial (mt)DNA, and internal transcribed spacer] analyses were carried out on fourteen populations collected worldwide and on one mass‐reared strain. The genetic distances between the specimens of N. californicus and another related species were high and no overlap was observed, sustaining the reliability of such molecular methods for assisting a specific diagnosis. Furthermore, the genetic distances between populations of N. californicus were very low and overlap between intra‐ and interpopulations distances was observed, except for two populations collected in France (Marsillargues and Midi‐Pyrénées). The high mitochondrial differentiation between these two latter populations and the others questions their specific status: do they belong to the species N. californicus or to another cryptic species? However, using nuclear DNA marker analyses, no distinct differences were observed. Furthermore, even if significant morphological differences were observed between the populations, these differences were very small and the standard errors within each population were very low. We thus concluded that all the populations studied belong to the species N. californicus, despite unexpected high mitochondrial variations. The present study thus displays the importance of an integrative taxonomic approach for avoiding misidentifications. Parasites often affect the abundance and life‐history traits of their hosts. We studied the impact of a social parasite – a slavemaking ant – on host ant communities using two complementary field manipulations. In the first experiment, we analysed the effect of social parasite presence on host populations in one habitat. In a second experiment, conducted in two habitats, we used a cross‐fostering design, analysing the effect of sympatric and allopatric social parasites. In the first experiment, host colonies benefited to some extent from residing in parasite‐free areas, showing increased total production. Yet, in the second experiment, host colonies in plots containing social parasites were more productive, and this effect was most evident in response to allopatric social parasites. We propose several explanations for these inconsistent results, which are related to environmental variability. The discrepancies between the two habitats can be explained well by ecological variation as a result of differences in altitudes and climate. For example, ant colonies in the colder habitat were larger and, for one host species, colonies were more often polygynous. In addition, our long‐term documentation – a total of four measurements of community structure in 6 years – showed temporal variation in abundance and life‐history traits of ant colonies, unrelated to the manipulations. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 559–570.  相似文献
