 Recent research suggests that increases in growing-season length (GSL) in mid-northern latitudes may be partially responsible for increased forest growth and carbon sequestration. We used the BIOME-BGC ecosystem model to investigate the impacts of including a dynamically regulated GSL on simulated carbon and water balance over a historical 88-year record (1900–1987) for 12 sites in the eastern USA deciduous broadleaf forest. For individual sites, the predicted GSL regularly varied by more than 15 days. When grouped into three climatic zones, GSL variability was still large and rapid. There is a recent trend in colder, northern sites toward a longer GSL, but not in moderate and warm climates. The results show that, for all sites, prediction of a long GSL versus using the mean GSL increased net ecosystem production (NEP), gross primary production (GPP), and evapotranspiration (ET); conversely a short GSL is predicted to decrease these parameters. On an absolute basis, differences in GPP between the dynamic and mean GSL simulations were larger than the differences in NEP. As a percentage difference, though, NEP was much more sensitive to changes in GSL than were either GPP or ET. On average, a 1-day change in GSL changed NEP by 1.6%, GPP by 0.5%, and ET by 0.2%. Predictions of NEP and GPP in cold climates were more sensitive to changes in GSL than were predictions in warm climates. ET was not similarly sensitive. First, our results strongly agree with field measurements showing a high correlation between NEP and dates of spring growth, and second they suggest that persistent increases in GSL may lead to long-term increases in carbon storage. The present work was conducted to elucidate the effect of soil type, salinity stress and allelochemicals from alfalfa on the germination efficiency, seedling growth and photosynthetic pigments of Medicago sativa L. The highest germination rate (69.9%) was recorded for seeds cultivated in sandy soil followed by that of clay soil (42%) and then loamy soil (19%). The maximum germination rate was attained at 50 mM NaCl concentration level, after that the values were decreased as the salinity levels increased. The maximum lengths (cm) of plumule and radicle and their growth rates (cm/day) were obtained at control level and found to decline significantly as the salinity increased. Aqueous extracts of alfalfa reduced the germination rate, radicle and plumule growth and seedling dry weight of L. sativum. However, chlorophyll and carotenoid content was increased, their maxima were recorded at 50% concentration level. The chlorophyll a/b ratio attained its maximum at the full strength concentration level.  相似文献

The interaction of membranes with peptides and proteins is largely determined by their amphiphilic character. Hydrophobic moments of helical segments are commonly derived from their two-dimensional helical wheel projections, and the same is true for β-sheets. However, to the best of our knowledge, there exists no method to describe structures in three dimensions or molecules with irregular shape. Here, we define the hydrophobic moment of a molecule as a vector in three dimensions by evaluating the surface distribution of all hydrophilic and lipophilic regions over any given shape. The electrostatic potential on the molecular surface is calculated based on the atomic point charges. The resulting hydrophobic moment vector is specific for the instantaneous conformation, and it takes into account all structural characteristics of the molecule, e.g., partial unfolding, bending, and side-chain torsion angles. Extended all-atom molecular dynamics simulations are then used to calculate the equilibrium hydrophobic moments for two antimicrobial peptides, gramicidin S and PGLa, under different conditions. We show that their effective hydrophobic moment vectors reflect the distribution of polar and nonpolar patches on the molecular surface and the calculated electrostatic surface potential. A comparison of simulations in solution and in lipid membranes shows how the peptides undergo internal conformational rearrangement upon binding to the bilayer surface. A good correlation with solid-state NMR data indicates that the hydrophobic moment vector can be used to predict the membrane binding geometry of peptides. Semax, a member of ACTH-derived peptides family, has been employed in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke in patients. It decreased neurological deficit and reduced NO hyperproduction in the rat brain, caused by acute cerebral hypoperfusion. We suggested that semax is also able to protect rat heart from ischemic damage in acute myocardial infaction (AMI). AMI was induced by left coronary artery occlusion, myocardial ischemic area averaged 30 % of left ventricle. In 2 hours after coronary occlusion, the AMI group developed 11 % reduced mean arterial blood pressure and 48 % increased diastolic blood pressure in left ventricle in comparison with sham-operated control group. However, infusion of either dobutamine, which directly stimulates myocardial contractility, or sodium nitroprusside and phenylephrine, that change vascular resistance and thus cardiac afterload, did not reveal distinctions in hemodynamic parameters between groups. These data indicate absense or only moderate cardiac dysfunction in rats with AMI and are consistent wih morphometrical and histochemical studies that did not detect any necrotic or apoptotic (TUNEL-test) changes in left ventricular cardiomyocytes in spite of development of distinct ischemic disturbances of mitochondria and nuclear in about 50 % of cardiomyocytes in 2 hours after AMI. Semax (150 microg/kg), given i. p. 15 min and 2 hours after coronary occlusion, caused no effect on cardiac function, but completely prevented ischemia-induced ultrastructural changes of cardiomyocytes. This protective effect was accompanied by the ability of peptide to blunt the increase in plasma concentrations of nitrates, observed in AMI group.  相似文献

In mammals, the vomeronasal organ (VNO) contains chemosensory receptor cells that bind to pheromones and induce a variety of social and reproductive behaviors. It has been traditionally assumed that the human VNO (Jacobson's organ) is a vestigial structure, although recent studies have shown minor evidence for a structurally intact and possibly functional VNO. The presence and function of the human VNO remains controversial, however, as pheromones and VNO receptors have not been well characterized. In this study we screened a human Bacterial Artificial Chromosome (BAC) library with multiple primer sets designed from human cDNA sequences homologous to mouse VNO receptor genes. Utilizing these BAC sequences in addition to mouse VNO receptor sequences, we screened the High Throughput Genome Sequence (HTGS) database to find additional human putative VNO receptor genes. We report the identification of 56 BACs carrying 34 distinct putative VNO receptor gene sequences, all of which appear to be pseudogenes. Sequence analysis indicates substantial homology to mouse V1R and V2R VNO receptor families. Furthermore, chromosomal localization via FISH analysis and RH mapping reveal that the majority of the BACs are localized to telomeric and centromeric chromosomal localizations and may have arisen through duplication events. These data yield insight into the present state of pheromonal olfaction in humans and into the evolutionary history of human VNO receptors.  相似文献

NK cells from NOD mice induced with poly(I:C) in vivo exhibit low cytotoxicity against a range of target cells, but the genetic mechanisms controlling this defect are yet to be elucidated. Defects in the expression of NKG2D and its ligands, the RAE-1 molecules, have been hypothesized to contribute to the reduced NK function present in NOD mice. In this study, we show that segregation of the NK-mediated killing phenotype did not correlate with the NOD Raet1 haplotype and that the large alterations in NKG2D expression previously reported on NK cells expanded in vitro were not observed in primary, poly(I:C)-elicited NK cells in vivo. Additional studies indicate a complex genetic control of defective NOD NK cells including genes linked to the MHC and possibly those that are associated with an altered cytokine response to the TLR3-agonist poly(I:C).  相似文献

One of the most common drawbacks of artificial life conditions imposed by aquaculture is the quite high presence of skeletal anomalies (SAs) in reared fish, which reduce both functional performances and marketing image/commercial value of the reared lots. Thus, skeletal malformations and their incidence are one of the most important factors affecting fish farmer’s production costs, and several efforts have been due to develop appropriate tools in detecting patterns of co‐variation among rearing parameters and fish quality. In this paper we explore the advantages of using Self‐Organized Maps (SOMs) when dealing with the analysis of correlations between the pattern of SA presence and rearing parameters in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.), that is a largely reared fish of high commercial value. SOM, which is one of the best known neural networks with unsupervised learning rules, were applied to develop a model of the occurrence of SAs, both in terms of type and quantity, in seabream lots from different rearing approaches (extensive, semi‐intensive and intensive). The trained SOMs classified lots according to the variation observed in the different weights of SAs, but also allows the detection of a series of correspondence, namely between: (i) the patter of SAs occurrence and the different rearing approach currently used in seabream aquaculture; and (ii) the total SAs incidence and the variability of meristic counts, represent a completely independent dataset. Mesocosms resulted the best rearing approach to produce wild‐like fish, whereas intensive rearing is characterized by the large presence of SA. Globally, results suggested that this approach is reliable to be used for estimate the distance between aquaculture products and the wild‐like phenotype used as quality reference.  相似文献
