Chlamydia isopodii sp. n., an obligate intracellular parasite of Porcellio scaber

In an ultrastructural study of the hepatopancreas of Porcellio scaber, an obligate intracellular parasite, Chlamydia, was noted in the epithelial cells. Although the infection was found to extend the entire length of the hepatopancreas, it was most extensive in the glandular region. Indirect immunofluorescence testing revealed no cross-reactivity with either lymphogranuloma venereum or psittacosis antisera.     

Redox study of electron donation to P-680 in Photosystem II

Flash-induced absorption changes at 820 nm were studied as a function of redox potential in Tris-extracted Photosystem II oxygen-evolving particles and Triton subchloroplast fraction II particles. The rereduction kinetics of P-680+ in both preparations showed biphasic recovery phases with half-times of 42 and 625 microseconds at pH 4.5. The magnitude of the 42 microseconds phase of P-680+ rereduction was strongly dependent on the redox potential of the medium. This absorption transient, attributed to electron donation from D1 (the secondary electron donor in oxygen-inhibited chloroplasts), titrated as a single redox component with a midpoint potential of +240 +/- 35 mV. The experimentally determined midpoint potential was found to be independent of pH over the tested range 4.5-6.0. In contrast, the magnitude of the 625 microseconds phase of P-680+ rereduction was independent of redox potential between +350 and +100 mV. These results are interpreted in terms of a model in which an alternate electron donor with Em approximately equal to 240 mV, termed D0, serves as a rapid donor (t 1/2 less than or equal to 2 microseconds) to P-680+ in Tris-extracted and Triton-treated Photosystem-II preparations. According to this model, the slower electron donor, D1, is functional only when D0 becomes oxidized.     

Response of lentil to VA Mycorrhizal inoculation and plant available P levels of unsterile soils

Summary Responses of lentil in unsterile soils at low, medium and high levels of plant available soil P toGlomus fasciculatum inoculation were evaluated. It was observed that growth, dry matter accumulation, nodulation, and nitrogen fixation were considerably improved in VAM inoculated plants over uninoculated control at low and medium levels of plant available soil P.     

Massive deformation of the scrotal wall by idiopathic calcinosis of the scrotum

Idiopathic calcinosis of the scrotum is a rare disease that may cause massive deformation of the scrotal wall. The first patient we present was also known to have neurofibromatosis. In the second patient we describe, nodules of idiopathic calcinosis of the scrotum were seen with walls that evidenced no epithelial lining, as well as calcification in epithelial cysts. At present, the only possible treatment is excision, and we excised the afflicted skin without problems in primary wound closure.     

Identification of N5-methyl-N5-formyl-2,5,6-triamino-4-hydroxypyrimidine as a major adduct in rat liver DNA after treatment with the carcinogens, N,N-dimethylnitrosamine or 1,2-dimethylhydrazine

Human Tamm-Horsfall urinary glycoprotein from an individual of the blood group Sd(a+) phenotype was tritium-labelled by treatment with galactose oxidase and sodium boro[3H]hydride and was then digested with endo-beta-galactosidase. A series of dialysable, labelled fragments was released from which a pentasaccharide was isolated that strongly inhibited the agglutination of Sd(a+) red cells by human anti-Sda serum and hence contained the Sda determinant structure. Reduction, methylation analysis and sequential exo-glycosidase digestion established the structure of the pentasaccharide as: GalNAc beta(1 leads to 4)[NeuAc(2 leads to 3)]Gal beta(1 leads to 4)GlcNAc beta(1 leads to 3)Gal     

Restriction fragment length polymorphisms of horse class II MHC genes observed using various human alpha-and beta-chain cDNA probes

Genomic DNA isolated from 20 horses was digested with up to six restriction endonucleases and subjected to southern blot hybridization analysis using various human class II alpha- and beta-chain cDNA probes. A high degree of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was found for the DQ alpha, DP beta, DQ beta and DR beta probes, about 20 polymorphic bands being detected for each. DR alpha showed 2-4 polymorphic bands, whereas no evidence for DP alpha-like genes was found. A number of correlations of RFLPs with individual alloantisera were apparent.     

A radioimmunoassay for epinephrine and norepinephrine in tissues and plasma

An I¹²⁵ radioimmunoassay (RIA) has been developed for the measurement of plasma and tissue epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE). The assay utilizes an antibody which specifically binds metanephrine. E and NE are detected by conversion to metanephrine with the enzymes catechol-0-methyltransferase and phenylethanol-amine-N-methyltransferase. The assay is very specific and will allow the measurement of E and NE in less than 500 μl of normal human plasma. E and NE concentrations were determined by both the RIA and a radioenzymatic assay in canine, human and rat biologic samples. The correlation coefficients between the two assays were .962 for E and .956 for NE. The RIA is sensitive, specific, precise and significantly less costly and time consuming than present radioenzymatic methods.
