Samanea saman has rapid phytochrome-regulated nyctinasty: red light preceding darkness causes pinnules to close while far-rod light allows opening- Not only the initial angle of the pinnules, but the degree of control by phytochrome depends on the “subjective time of day” at which the tissue is exposed. Excised pairs of pinnules close rapidly when submerged in water; such closure is prevented by bubbling oxygen through the water. However, if submergence closure were due solely to low oxygen levels, then nonsubmerged pinnules in a pure nitrogen atmosphere should also close. Instead, they neither close nor respond to light, but they do respond when air is readmitted, indicating that oxygen is necessary for movement rather than for photoreception. The closure of submerged pinnules remains unexplained. Attempts to detect effects of red or far-red on oxygen uptake by pulvinus tissue were unsuccessful. The following method has been used to test the effects of various inhibitors and other substances: pinnules are excised at the first hour of the day, trimmed, submerged in a sealed chamber, given far-red light, and left in darkness while oxygen is bubbled through the medium. Concentrated test solutions are injected either initially or when the red and far-red exposures are given. Thus far, the substances tested have had little or no effect on the phytochrome response.  相似文献

Summary Laboratory studies to determine the tolerance of an isolate ofAlternaria tenuis causing a black core rot of mandarin oranges (Citrus reticulata) have shown that presence of low amounts of manganese, zinc, iron, copper, boron, and molybdenum in a synthetic medium stimulated growth and sporulation of the fungus. Concentrations of 20 ppm or more of copper sulphate, boric acid, and ammonium molybdate, however, caused significant reduction of growth. Conidia of the fungus were very sensitive to even low amounts of copper, zinc, and iron. Copper sulphate was most toxic to spore germination followed, in order of inhibitory effect, by zinc sulphate, ferrous sulphate, and boric acid. Ammonium molybdate and manganese sulphate were stimulatory to spore germination at 5 ppm. There was a positive correlation between percentage of spore germination and average length of germ tubes in different concentrations of various chemicals. The possibility of using copper sulphate, zinc sulphate, and ferrous sulphate as spray materials for trees and as dip for ripe fruits to prevent black core rot are discussed.Assoc. 1. Orosomucoid was prepared from the urine of a nephrotic patient and polymerized by heating it in a range of salt concentrations at pH4·1. 2. Heating at low ionic strengths produced a `chain' polymer of indefinite length but having the same width as the diameter of the monomer (5·0nm.). Similar treatment in high ionic strengths also produced a spherical (`ball') polymer of limited diameter (14·8nm.). 3. The size and shape of both polymers were determined from ultra-centrifuge, gel-filtration and electron-microscope results. The results suggest that eight monomer units condense to form the ball polymer. 4. Heating orosomucoid at pH1·8 hydrolysed the N-acetylneuraminic acid off the molecule; only chains could then be formed, even in high ionic strengths. 5. Both polymers were stable under normal conditions but could be depolymerized in 3m-guanidine hydrochloride. The monomer could be repolymerized on heating: the `chain monomer' only formed chains at all ionic strengths, but the `ball monomer' was indistinguishable from the original monomer in its immunological properties and polymerization reaction.  相似文献

We discovered an enhancing effect of background illumination on amplitude and total duration of electrical reactions of the tectum of the midbrain and pallial thickening in response to a flash and electrical stimulation of the optic nerve. This effect is analogous to the phenomenon of photic potentiation known for the visual system of mammals. Changes of evoked potentials in the contralateral pallial thickening and tectum were fairly stable and survived throughout the course of the entire period of illumination (up to 30 min). The effect was intensified with an increase of illumination intensity. Intensification of response on the part of the tectum and pallial thickening during steady illumination was accompanied by a weakening of slow background electrical activity. During the action of background illumination, the excitability of the tectum rose considerably with direct electrical stimulation. The influence of prolonged illumination on responses of the tectum and pallial thickening was more clearly detected at submaximal strengths of stimulation of the optic nerve or tectum. All of the effects of photic potentiation are confined to centers contralateral to the illuminated eye. This indicates the absence of diffuse effects on excitability of the turtle brain.A. N.
