Recent studies suggest that action video game players exhibit superior performance in visuospatial cognitive tasks compared with non-game players. However, the neural basis underlying this visuospatial cognitive performance advantage remains largely unknown. The present human behavioral and imaging study compared gray matter volume in action video game experts and non-experts using structural magnetic resonance imaging and voxel-based morphometry analysis. The results revealed significantly larger gray matter volume in the right posterior parietal cortex in experts compared with non-experts. Furthermore, the larger gray matter volume in the right posterior parietal cortex significantly correlated with individual performance in a visual working memory task in experts. These results suggest that differences in brain structure may be linked to extensive video game play, leading to superior visuospatial cognitive performance in action video game experts.  相似文献

An outbreak of acute enteritis due to Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni involving a total of 35 out of 74 children occurred at a nursery school in Tokyo in January 1979 and lasted for 7 days. It was the first case of a community outbreak of the disease to be recognized in Japan. The major symptoms observed in the patients consisted of diarrhea (88%), fever (82%), abdominal pain (39%), and vomiting (6.1%). The rate of isolation of the organism from the patients was 39%. Sera of four patients showed elevated agglutinin titers against the organism ranging from 1 : 80 to 1 : 320. Although it is suggested that the outbreak was caused by a communal lunch or between-meal snacks prepared by and provided at the nursery school, the incriminated food, source and route of contamination could not be pinpointed.  相似文献

In the mouse sytem, specific determinants other than major histocompatibility complex (MHC) gene products are capable of inducing strong primary proliferative responses in naive T cells. These determinants are encoded by at least two gene loci designated as minor lymphocyte stimulatory (Mls) loci. In order to elucidate the biological role of the Mls system, an effort has been initiated to clarify the fundamental immunogenetic characteristics of the Mls system. In this report, we describe the unexpected finding that Mls c determinants are expressed on splenocytes of strains including those which have been used as prototypic examples of three other Mls types: Mls a (DBA/2, DBA/1), Mls b , (BALB/c), and Mls x (PL/J). The expression of Mls c by these strains was demonstrated both by the response patterns of unprimed T cells from MHC-identical inbred or F1 hybrid strains and by the responses of a panel of Mls-specific T-cell clones. α-Tocopherol was reacted with an alkylperoxyl radical at 37°C in benzene. 2,2′-Azobis(2,4- dimethylvaleronitrile) was used to generate the alkylperoxyl radicals. The reaction products of α- tocopherol were isolated by reverse-phase and normal-phase high performance liquid chromatography, and their structures were characterized. They were four stereoisomers of 8a-(l-cyano-l,3- dimethyl)butylperoxy-α-tocopherone, spirodiene dimer and two geometrical isomers of the trimer. When α-tocopherol at a low concentration was reacted with AMVN, the major products were 8a- alkylperoxy-α-tocopherones. On the other hand, the products of the alkylperoxyl radical with α- tocopherol at a high concentration were spirodiene dimer and trimer in addition to the 8a-alkylperoxy- α-tocopherones.  相似文献

Visual systems in deep-sea fishes have been previously studied from a photobiological aspect; however, those of deep-sea fish inhabiting the hydrothermal vents are far less understood due to sampling difficulties. In this study, we analyzed the visual pigment of a deep-sea snailfish, Careproctus rhodomelas, discovered and collected only near the hydrothermal vents of oceans around Japan. Proteins were solubilized from the C. rhodomelas eyeball and subjected to spectroscopic analysis, which revealed the presence of a pigment characterized by an absorption maximum (λmax) at 480 nm. Immunoblot analysis of the ocular protein showed a rhodopsin-like immunoreactivity. We also isolated a retinal cDNA encoding the entire coding sequence of putative C. rhodomelas rhodopsin (CrRh). HEK293EBNA cells were transfected with the CrRh cDNA and the proteins extracted from the cells were subjected to spectroscopic analysis. The recombinant CrRh showed the absorption maximum at 480 nm in the presence of 11-cis retinal. Comparison of the results from the eyeball extract and the recombinant CrRh strongly suggests that CrRh has an A1-based 11-cis-retinal chromophore and works as a photoreceptor in the C. rhodomelas retina, and hence that C. rhodomelas responds to dim blue light much the same as other deep-sea fishes. Because hydrothermal vent is a huge supply of viable food, C. rhodomelas likely do not need to participate diel vertical migration and may recognize the bioluminescence produced by aquatic animals living near the hydrothermal vents.  相似文献

Annulate lamellae, though few, were observed in the epithelial cells of rete ovarii of 1-month-old rabbits, but not of other-aged juvenile rabbits examined. There were little differences in the fine structural details between the rete ovarii with annulate lamellae and those without annulate lamellae. Most rete ovarii cells were undergoing atrophy. This finding suggests that annulate lamellae may be quite ordinal, transitory organelles common to virtually all cell types.  相似文献

SecM, a bacterial secretion monitor protein, contains a specific amino acid sequence at its C-terminus, called arrest sequence, which interacts with the ribosomal tunnel and arrests its own translation. The arrest sequence is sufficient and necessary for stable translation arrest. However, some previous studies have suggested that the nascent chain outside the ribosome affects the stability of translation arrest. To clarify this issue, we performed in vitro translation assays with HaloTag proteins fused to the C-terminal fragment of E. coli SecM containing the arrest sequence or the full-length SecM. We showed that the translation of HaloTag proteins, which are fused to the fragment, is not effectively arrested, whereas the translation of HaloTag protein fused to full-length SecM is arrested efficiently. In addition, we observed that the nascent SecM chain outside the ribosome markedly stabilizes the translation arrest. These results indicate that changes in the nascent polypeptide chain outside the ribosome can affect the stability of translation arrest; the nascent SecM chain outside the ribosome stabilizes the translation arrest.  相似文献
