Prevalence of systemic diseases in patients undergoing minor oral surgeries

It is of interest to evaluate the prevalence of systemic disorders in patients undergoing minor oral surgeries at a dental hospital. This will help to take necessary precautions prior to oral surgeries. We used the digital case records of 1288 patients who underwent minor oral surgeries in a hospital. Demographic details and systemic diseases of the patients were recorded from digital case records. Data shows that 103 patients (7.9%) of the total number of patients undergoing minor oral surgeries had systemic diseases with 3.8% of patients diagnosed with diabetes. Statistically significant associations were found between type of minor oral surgery and the type of systemic disease (p<0.001); age of patients and type of minor oral surgery (p<0.001); age and type of systemic diseases (p<0.001) and gender of patient and type of minor oral surgery (p = 0.005). Thus, data shows the prevalence of systemic diseases in patients undergoing minor oral surgeries was 7.9%.     

Courtship Behavior of Zaprionus indianus (Gupta) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) from Populations Colonizing South America

We describe for the first time the sexual behavior and the courtship song of males of the African fly Zaprionus indianus (Gupta), a recent invader of South America. The male courtship song is formed by monocyclic pulses and the courtship behavior is simple when compared to that of species of Drosophila. Two interpulse interval (IPI) distributions were observed: pre-mounting and mounting. No significant difference was observed between the pre-mounting IPIs of males that descended from three geographical populations from South America. We also observed the songs produced by females and the homosexual behavior exhibited by males. A sequence of bursts is produced by females as a refusal signal against males, while males emit a characteristic song that identifies sex genus, which differs from the courtship song. The short courtship and mating latencies recorded reveal vigorous males and receptive females, respectively.

A decrease of neuroprotector effect of ganglioside GM1 on PC12 cells under conditions of oxidative stress in the presence of inhibitor of tyrosine kinase of Trk-receptors

Effects of inhibitors of tyrosine kinases (K-252a, genistein) and of phospholipase A2 (bromophenacetyl bromide) on viability of PC12 cells are studied in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and ganglioside GM1. The degree of inhibition of hydrogen peroxide cytotoxic effect by ganglioside GM1 amounted to 52.8 +/- 4.3 %. However, in the presence in the medium of 0.1 and 1 microM inhibitors of tyrosine kinase of Trk-receptors (K-252a) it was as low as 32.7 +/- 6.5 % and 11.7 +/- 9.8 %, respectively. GM1 prevented Na+, K+-ATPase produced by H2O2, but in the presence of 1 microM K-252a this effect was practically not pronounced. In the presence of another inhibitor of tyrosine kinases--genistein, a tendency for a decrease of the GM1 protective effect was observed at its concentrations 0.1 and 1 microM, whereas at a higher concentration 10 microM genistein depressed the GM1 neuroprotective effect statistically significantly. It was found that inhibitor of phospholipase A2 bromophenacetyl bromide did not affect the action of GM1 aimed at increasing the viability of cells under action of hydrogen peroxide on them. It seems that this enzyme is not involved in the cascade of reactions participating in realization of the ganglioside protective effect. Thus, inhibitor of tyrosine kinase of Trk-receptors K-252 decreases or practically prevents the ganglioside GM1 neuroprotective effect of PC12 cells under stress conditions; the same ability is characteristic of genistein--an inhibitor of tyrosine kinases of the wider spectrum of action.     

Invertebrate communities associated with macrophytes in Lake Ladoga: effects of environmental factors

Littoral invertebrate communities (meio- and macrobenthos and zooplankton) were studied in seven types of macrophyte associations commonly encountered in Lake Ladoga: in reed (Phragmites) beds on sand, soft and hard bottoms, in associations with the prevalence of Potamogeton spp., Carex spp., and Equisetum fluviatile, and in diverse vegetation stands with e.g. Polygonum amphibium, Cicuta virosa, Typha latifolia and Eleocharis acicularis. Some of the studied habitats were affected by sewage pollution, others were in comparatively undisturbed areas. Statistically significant differences between invertebrate communities in the different macrophyte associations were found. In stepwise multiple linear regression analysis the following factors were identified as determinants of abundance of aquatic invertebrates in macrophyte associations: shoot density, plant dry weight biomass, periphyton biomass, periphyton chlorophyll a, periphyton primary production, and concentrations of Sr, Mg, Ca, P, Mn, Zn, Pb and Cu. Pollution was shown to have a minor effect on the composition of littoral invertebrate communities. It is not possible to determine one single principle factor responsible for the structure and density of invertebrates in macrophyte communities.     

Localization of several rhodopsin regeneration enzymes in retinal rods]

The distribution of NAD kinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase within membranes of both outer and inner retina rod segments was studied by the sucrose gradient centrifugation of crude outer segment preparations. Rhodopsin and retinoldehydrogenase served as markers for outer segment membranes, whereas succinate dehydrogenase was a marker for inner ones. It is shown that NAD kinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase are localized within inner segment membranes of the photoreception cell and that the activity of these enzymes in the crude preparations is due to contamination of the inner segments.     

Catalysis of the biodegradation of unusable medicines by alkanotrophic rhodococci

Experiments on the biodegradation of unusable medicines containing a phenolic hydroxy group by actinobacteria of the genus Rhodococcus were performed. Six species and sixty-four strains were tested. It was found that rhodococci could degrade paracetamol, and some R. ruber strains showed high levels of its degradation. An efficient method for the identification and quantification of paracetamol and the products of its conversion (p-aminophenol, pyrocatechol, and hydroquinone) immediately in the culture liquid was developed. Conditions for the complete biodegradation of paracetamol dosage forms (pills) were optimized. The experimental results can be applied for the development of biotechnological methods for degrading medicines: faked, rejected, or those that are expired.
