Fish health is affected by water pollution. Oreochromis niloticus collected during summer 2014 from El-Serw, a polluted site on the Nile River, were compared with fish from a reference site, El-Zamalek. Histopathological changes were detected in gill and liver tissue samples using light and electron microscopy. In addition, the degree of DNA damage was measured using the comet assay. To indicate the severity of water pollution at the two sites, physico-chemical properties and heavy metal concentrations were investigated. Gill damage, including lamellar cell hyperplasia and aneurysm, was observed in the fish samples from the polluted site. The livers of fish from the polluted area showed necrosis and an increase in melanomacrophage centres. Histochemical results confirmed a marked rise of gill mucopolysaccharides and a reduction of carbohydrate stored in hepatocytes. Electron microscopy revealed clear alterations in gill and liver tissue of fish from the polluted site. The comet assay showed highly significant DNA damage in tilapia collected from the polluted site, compared to those from the reference site. Histopathological biomarkers and the comet assay may therefore be sensitive indicators of exposure to mixtures of aquatic pollutants in Nile tilapia. 相似文献

Global warming has become a worldwide concern due to its adverse effects on agricultural output. In particular, long-term mildly high temperatures interfere with sexual reproduction and thus fruit and seed set. To uncover the genetic basis of observed variation in tolerance against heat, a bi-parental F2 mapping population from two contrasting cultivars, i.e. Nagcarlang and NCHS-1, was generated and phenotyped under continuous mild heat conditions for a number of traits underlying reproductive success, i.e. pollen viability, pollen number, style length, anther length, style protrusion, female fertility and flowering characteristics, i.e. inflorescence number and flowers per inflorescence. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were identified for most of these traits, including a single, highly significant one for pollen viability, which accounted for 36% of phenotypic variation in the population and modified pollen viability under high temperature with around 20%. QTLs for some traits colocalised, indicating trait dependency or pleiotropic-effect loci. We conclude that a limited set of major genes determines differences in performance of reproductive traits under continuous mild heat in tomato. The results contribute to our fundamental understanding of pollen thermotolerance and may support development of more heat-tolerant tomato varieties. 相似文献

The effects of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) and all-trans retinol on the cell proliferative activity of vitamin A-deprived hamster tracheal epithelium have been studied in vitamin A-deficient, serum-free, hormone-supplemented medium in organ culture. In the absence of retinol, CSC induced a dose-dependent increase in labeling index (LI) during 12 days of culture. The basal cells were more sensitive to CSC exposure than non-basal cells during the first 6 to 8 culture days. However, in squamous metaplastic foci developing after culture day 6, both basal and non-basal cells in the mid-part of the epithelium were labeled. Physiological concentrations of all-trans retinol stimulated the non-basal LI and inhibited the basal cell LI. Compared with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), all retinol concentrations used in the present study inhibited the basal cell LI at each time point examined (4-12 days culture). Exposure of tracheal rings to retinol, either before or after exposure to CSC, or simultaneous exposure to retinol and CSC, clearly decreased the CSC-induced basal cell proliferative activity depending on the retinol concentration used. It is concluded from the present study that squamous metaplasia induced by vitamin A-deficiency or by CSC originates mainly from basal cells and that for the maintenance of these lesions, both basal and non-basal cells play a role. Plasmodium vivax is the most widespread parasite causing malaria, being
especially prevalent in the Americas and Southeast Asia. Children are one of the
most affected populations, especially in highly endemic areas. However, there are
few studies evaluating the therapeutic response of infants with vivax malaria.
This study retrospectively evaluated the parasitaemia clearance in children
diagnosed with vivax malaria during the first five days of exclusive treatment
with chloroquine (CQ). Infants aged less than six months old had a significantly
slower parasitaemia clearance time compared to the group of infants and children
between six months and 12 years old (Kaplan-Meier survival analysis; Wilcoxon
test; p = 0.004). The impaired clearance of parasitaemia in younger children with
vivax malaria is shown for the first time in Latin America. It is speculated that
CQ pharmacokinetics in young children with vivax malaria is distinct, but this
specific population may also allow the detection of CQ-resistant parasites during
follow-up, due to the lack of previous immunity. 相似文献
