The metabolism of d-glyceraldehyde by the lens

1. The metabolism of d-glyceraldehyde by the lens was examined. 2. When low concentrations of d-[U-(14)C]glyceraldehyde were incubated with lens extracts there was no incorporation of the label into protein; more than two-thirds of the labelled metabolites consisted of glyceric acid and glycerol, their relative proportions depending on the species. Lactic acid, a phosphate, glutathione-glyceraldehyde compounds and a neutral compound were also formed. 3. When high concentrations of d-[U-(14)C]glyceraldehyde were incubated with lens, extensive incorporation of the label into protein occurred and the protein became yellow-brown. This coloured protein did not exhibit the fluorescent properties shown by the brown proteins of human cataractous senile lens, or of naphthaquinone-treated lens. 4. Evidence that d-glyceraldehyde is formed by the lens was sought but not found.     

BONE MARROW RESTORATION AFTER LOCALIZED DEPLETION

Studies have been made of marrow restoration after localized depletion of the rabbit femur by dextran perfusion. Restoration was shown to involve an initial period of reorganization which blends with a more prolonged period of hemic cell repopulation. Cellularity returned to normal levels by 35 days, the recovery of myeloid cells being somewhat more rapid than that of the erythroid elements. In either case, the evolution of immature hemic cells was soon followed by the appearance of more mature forms even at the earliest stages of marrow repopulation. ³H-TdR uptake per cell increased rapidly to a level approximately twice normal after the first week. The augmented incorporation of thymidine, revealed by scintillation spectrometry and confirmed upon autoradiography, was shown to be due to an increase in DNA synthesis rate as well as in the fraction of participating cells. It is suggested that the enhanced cell production is brought about by a decrease in the proliferative cell cycle and an increase in the growth fraction. The origin of the repopulating cells remains a moot point. Cell migration from the epiphyseal marrow is apparently not involved. Irrespective of the source of stem-type cells, the stimulus for regeneration appears to be locally determined.     

Uptake and light activated esterification of P by isolated chloroplasts

1. 1. Esterification of ³²P₁ by illuminated chloroplasts prepared on a sucrose gradient was examined to establish the optimal incubation conditions.

2. 2. The evidence is consistent with phosphorylation being closely coupled to the sum of noncyclic and pseudocyclic electron flow and with the rate of electron flow responding to the availability of electron acceptors.

3. 3. Apparent K_m values for ADP and Mg²⁺ were found to be 40 and 250 μM, respectively. The K_m value for Mg²⁺ was increased by the presence of Ca²⁺. Two apparent values were observed for P₁ at 0.2 and 1.1 mM. Chloroplast damage resulted in increased apparent K_m (P₁) values.

4. 4. Acceleration of the esterification resulting from the addition of ADP and P₁ to the medium indicated that these compounds were able to penetrate to the active site of esterification.

5. 5. Ribose 5-phosphate (Rib-5-P) was shown to inhibit P₁ esterification without affecting the apparent K_m for ADP or P₁. The evidence suggests that Rib-5-P interferes with the uptake of P₁, and possibly ADP.

Dämpfung der Gewebeatmung (QO2) von Mäuseleber durch künstliche Impulsstrahlung

Zusammenfassung In einem gegen die natürliche Langwellenstrahlung abgeschirmten Versuchsraum wurde die Atmung von Mäuselebergewebe in künstlich erzeugten elektromagnetischen Feldern gemessen. Unter der Einwirkung von zyklonale Wetterlagen simulierenden Programmen (30–100 pulses sec^–1, > 100 mV m^–1, 10–100 kHz) ergab sich im Vergleich zu den Kontroll-QO₂-Werten eine signifikante Dämpfung der Gewebeatmung um 42% ± 2,8% (p<0,001). Die Applikation eines H-Feld-Programms blieb ohne Wirkung. Programme mit Simulierung antizyklonaler Wetterlagen(1–3 pulses sec^–1, <10 mV m^–1, 10 kHz) hatten ebenfalls keinen Einfluss auf die Atmungsgeschwindigkeit der Mäuseleber.

In a room completely shielded against long wave radiation, liver tissue of mice in a Warburg apparatus was exposed to artificial electromagnetic radiation simulating cyclonic and anticyclonic weather. Under the influence of simulated cyclonic weather programs (30–100 pulses sec^–1, > 100 mV m^–1 10–100 kHz) a significant decrease (42% ± 2,8%) of the respiration rate of the liver tissue was found, compared with the control QO₂ (p < 0,001). The application of a cyclonic weather H-field program had no effect. Simulated anticyclonic weather (1–3 pulses sec^–1, < 10 mV m^–1, 10 kHz) also failed to produce a demonstrable effect on the respiration rate of mouse liver tissue.

Resume Dans un local absolument protégé contre l'irradiation naturelle par ondes longues, des tissus de foie de souris ont été exposés, dans un appareil de Warburg, à des impulsions électromagnétiques artificielles, correspondant à celles de temps cyclonal et anticyclonal. Sous l'influence des programmes artificiels simulant le temps cyclonal(30–100 pulses sec^–1, > 100 mV m^–1, 10–100 kHz), il a été constaté une inhibitation significative de la respiration tissulaire de 42% ± 2,8% comparée aux valeurs du QO₂ de contrôle (p < 0.001). L'application d'un temps cyclonal-"H-field"-programme séparé, est demeuré sans effet. De même. les signaux de temps anticyclonal(1–3 pulses sec^–1, < 10 mV m^–1, 10 kHz), n'ont eu aucune influence démonstrable sur la vitesse de respiration du fois de souris.

     

Deoxyribonucleic Acid Base Compositions of Selected Mycoplasmas and L-Phase Variants

Deoxyribonucleic acid base compositions were determined for 25 Mycoplasma strains and 6 L-phase variant strains. Values obtained correlated well with the results of other investigators.     

Electrophoretic and Immunological Differences Between the Cytochrome c3 of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and that of Desulfovibrio vulgaris

The cytochrome c(3) of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and that of D. vulgaris were purified to homogeneity as judged by disc gel electrophoresis and by ultracentrifugation. Both cytochromes had an oxidation-reduction potential of -205 +/- 5 mv at pH 7.0 and showed characteristic absorption bands at 525 and 553 nm in the reduced state. The molecular weights of the two cytochromes (calculated from sedimentation and diffusion data) were similar, with values of 13,500 to 14,300 for D. desulfuricans and 13,800 to 14,700 for D. vulgaris. The two cytochromes differed in their electrophoretic properties on Geon and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and did not share a common precipitating antigenic determinant as judged by immunodiffusion data.

Spore productivity in Cladosporium

The high incidence ofCladosporia in the airspora indicates a prolific production of spores. Six species ofCladosporium were sampled over a period of 9 weeks, using dry and wet (mist-laden) air, and over a period of 4 weeks using humid air. Many more spores were released in wet air than in dry air: numbers released in humid air were generally intermediate between those of wet and dry samples. None of the cultures was exhausted of spores at the end of the sampling periods although samples generally decreased in size from the fifth or sixth week onwards. Removal of spores would seem to be conducive to further sporulation provided the substrate is not exhausted. Maximum productivities recorded for the six species (all in mist-laden air) ranged from 730 to 26 100 spores per mg dry weight of mycelium. Differences in the levels of spore production in culture by the six species do not correlate with their individual frequencies in the airspora, indicating that the latter are more dependent on the distribution and substrate relationships of each species.     

Sodium Content of Community Water Supplies in California

The amount of sodium ion in water used for ingestion may be critical in effective use of a low sodium dietary regimen. Waters containing not over 20 mg of sodium per liter are provided for in the sodium restricted diets set forth by the American Heart Association. For diets containing more than 500 mg of sodium a day, waters of greater sodium content may be used if proper dietary adjustments are made.While assessment of the long-term average sodium content of a community water supply is difficult, the determined values for sodium lend to classification within range categories. The larger community water supplies in California are presented within several range categories of sodium content.The more commonly used water softeners add sodium to water. The sodium-restricted patient should be cautioned against their use. Similar consideration should probably be given to water supplies of retirement communities where the potential for disorders requiring sodium restriction is greater than in the general population.
