Lepilemur edwardsi and Avahi occidentalis are two species of nocturnal, folivorous 'vertical clingers and leapers' (VCL). They have a similar body mass and share the same morphological adaptation for leaping. In a field study under sympatric conditions at Ampijoroa, Madagascar, comparison of support use with support availability using Jacobs' D preference values (Jacobs, 1974) showed that both species actively chose or avoided branches with certain qualities. However, while both species showed a preference for small oblique and horizontal branches, they selected them at different heights in the forest and with varying degrees of preference and avoidance for the other available supports. Despite their traditional locomotor assignation, both species showed a surprisingly strong preference for horizontal supports. These striking variations in detail of support preference may aid the maintenance of species segregation and niche difference. 相似文献

A restricted index selection experiment on mice was carried out for 14 generations on rate of early postnatal development (growth rate from birth to 10 days of age) vs. rate of development much later in ontogeny (growth rate from 28 to 56 days of age). Early rate of development (E) approximates hyperplasia (changes in cell number) and later rate (L) reflects hypertropy (changes in cell size). The selection criteria were as follows: E+L0 was selected to increase early body weight gain while holding late body weight gain constant; E-L0 was selected to decrease early body gain while holding late gain constant; E0L+ was selected to increase late gain holding early gain constant; and E0L- was selected to decrease late gain holding early gain constant. After 14 generations of selection, significant divergence among lines has occurred and the changes in the growth trajectories are very close to expectation. Summary Leaf disc transformation-regeneration technique was applied to the drought tolerant wild relative of cultivated tomato,Lycopersicon chilense, using a plasmid construct which contained the coding sequences of neomycin phosphotransferase (NPTII) and chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) genes. The two genotypes used, LA2747 and LA1930, showed a distinct difference in their aptitude to transformation; a higher success rate was obtained for the first genotype in every stage of the process. Shoots were formed on the regeneration medium containing 100 g/ml kanamycin through direct or indirect organogenesis. Root formation became only possible when the concentration of kanamycin was reduced to 50 g/ml. Expression of chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene was observed in all of the kanamycin-screened plants after they matured; the activity of the gene was absent or low in some of the young plants. The presence of the CAT gene in transgenic plants was further confirmed by Southern blot analysis. Although transgenic plants grew to maturity, they did not produce fruit, owing to the self incompatibility ofL. chilense.

An anaerobic liquid enrichment method followed by plating on a selective medium revealed that the soft rot coliform bacterium Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora was generally present in water from drains, ditches, streams, rivers and lakes (including reservoirs) in southern Scotland and in Colorado, United States, in mountainous, upland and arable areas through the year. Many sites were remote from susceptible or diseased crops. Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica was isolated much less frequently and no Erwinia bacteria were isolated from underground waters. Erwinia bacteria were also found in rain-water in Scotland, in winter snow from mountain passes in Colorado, and in sea water from the west and east coasts of Scotland and from the coasts of Oregon, California, Texas, Louisiana and Florida. The significance of the occurrence of these bacteria in water is discussed in relation to the control of blackleg and soft rot diseases of potato by production of Erwinia -free stocks. 相似文献

Mice of the PL/J strain exhibit a high percentage of morphologically abnormal sperm and provide a model for studying the function of abnormal sperm. The ability of such sperm to reach the site of fertilization within the female reproductive tract has been investigated. We have found a decrease in the percentage of structurally abnormal sperm within the population that reaches the oviduct. This observation suggests either that there is an active selection against abnormal sperm or that they are physiologically disadvantaged in reaching the site of fertilization. 相似文献

1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra at 500 MHz have been obtained for taurocholate/egg phosphatidylcholine mixtures of varying composition. The excellent chemical shift dispersion permits identification of most resonances for each component. This high-resolution character of the NMR spectra is retained until the phosphatidylcholine (PC) mole fraction exceeds 60–70% (the exact limit depends on ionic strength). 1H linewidths have been monitored as a function of solute composition in order to evaluate trends in local molecular mobility of each component as the distribution of aggregate particles is varied, and to examine the effects of added NaCl in altering micellar size and shape. Although prior light scattering studies (Mazer, N.A., Benedek, G.B. and Carey, M.C. (1980) Biochemistry 19, 601–615) and our own work indicate a 6-fold increase in particle hydrodynamic radius from pure taurocholate micelles to 1 : 1 taurocholate/PC mixtures containing 150 mM NaCl, both lipid components retain substantial motional freedom and exhibit narrow NMR signals in this compositional region. As the solubilization limit for PC is approached (approx. 2:1 PC:taurocholate), differential behavior is observed for the two components: the motion of taurocholate becomes preferentially restricted, while polar portions of the PC remain mobile until large multilayers predominate. 相似文献

Summary Field experiments were carried out using15N-labelled calcium nitrate, to investigate the relative uptake by barley of fertilizer-N and soil-N. On imperfectly drained till soils uptake of soil-N increased with increasing rate of fertilizer, but remained constant on a brown sand, possibly due to more efficient root exploration in the latter soil. In four out of five seasons, late uptake of soil-derived N was a major feature, and uptake from ploughed soil as compared with uptake from direct-drilled soil was correlated with seasonal rainfall patterns. Significantly higher quantities of both fertilizer- and soil-derived N were taken up by winter barley than by spring barley, reflecting the longer growth period and higher dry matter yield from the former crop. 相似文献

Photoaffinity labeling techniques have recently demonstrated that mammalian β1- and β2-adrenergic receptors reside on peptides of Mr 62 000–64 000. These receptor peptides are susceptible to endogenous metalloproteinases which produce peptides of Mr 30 000–55 000. Several proteinase inhibitors markedly attenuate this process, specifically EDTA and EGTA. In this study we investigated the functional significance of this proteolysis (and its inhibition) in the β2-adrenergic receptor-adenylate cyclase system derived from rat lung membranes. Membrane preparations containing proteolytically derived fragments of the receptor of Mr 40000–55 000 are fully functional with respect to their ability to bind β-adrenergic antagonist radioligands such as [3H]dihydroalprenolol and β-adrenergic antagonist photoaffinity reagents such as p-azido-m-[125I]iodobenzylcarazolol. They retain the ability to form a high-affinity, agonist-promoted, guanine nucleotide-sensitive complex thought to represent a ternary complex of agonist, receptor and guanine nucleotide regulatory protein. Nonetheless, after proteolysis, GTP is less able to revert this high-affinity receptor complex to one of lower affinity, and all aspects of adenylate cyclase stimulation are reduced. In addition, the functional integrity of the N protein in membranes prepared without proteinase inhibitors is reduced as assessed by reconstitution studies with the cyc[su− variant of S49 lymphoma cell membranes. These results suggest that endogenous proteolysis does not directly impair the ability of β-adrenergic receptors to either bind ligands or interact with the guanine nucleotide regulatory protein. However, they imply that endogenous proteolysis likely impairs the functionality of other components of the adenylate cyclase system, such as the nucleotide regulatory protein. 相似文献
