Eighty-five catalase- and oxidase-positive Gram-negative rods and cocci susceptible to penicillin G were isolated from a variety of food sources. The phenotypic relationships of these isolates with reference cultures of Bergeyella -like, Chryseobacterium, Empedobacter, Myroides , Moraxella , Sphingobacterium and Weeksella -like strains were examined by numerical taxonomy. Seventy-three isolates were recovered in five groups; 80% of the isolates clustered in groups 1, 2 and 3 and produced indole, bearing a strong resemblance to Weeksella and Bergeyella . They could not, however, be regarded as belonging to the known species of W. virosa and B. zoohelcum . It is suggested that three species may be necessary to accommodate the environmental Weeksella - or Bergeyella -like bacteria. The isolates in groups 4 and 5 had white colonies and were unable to produce indole, in this way resembling the Moraxella genus. 相似文献

Epidemiological evidence has suggested an association between meat consumption and the risk of breast cancer. 2-Amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP), a heterocyclic amine found in cooked meat, has been implicated in the aetiology of breast cancer and has been shown to induce tumour formation in rodent mammary glands. In addition, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) which has also been shown to induce tumour formation at a number of sites in rodents including the breast, are produced during the cooking of meat through the pyrolysis of fats. The aim of this study was to examine the bioavailability of these compounds to human breast tissue and their ability to bind to DNA to form DNA adducts. Patients undergoing breast surgery at York District Hospital were orally administered prior to surgery a capsule containing 20 μg of 14C PhIP (182 kBq, specific activity 2.05 GBq/mmol) or 5 μg of 14C B[a]P (36 kBq, specific activity 1.81 GBq/mmol). At surgery, normal and tumour breast tissue was resected and tissue concentrations of carcinogen measured by liquid scintillation counting and DNA adduct levels by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) were subsequently determined. It was found that both 14C PhIP and 14C B[a]P were able to reach the target organ where they had the ability to form DNA adducts. The level of adducts ranged from 26.22–477.35 and 6.61–208.38 adducts/1012 nucleotides following administration of 14C PhIP and 14C B[a]P, respectively, with no significant difference observed between levels in normal or tumour tissue. In addition, the data obtained in this study were comparable to adduct levels previously found in colon samples following administration of the same compounds to individuals undergoing colorectal surgery. Speakman and co-workers suggested the diurnal Samoan flying fox, Pteropus samoensis, may be at risk of hyperthermia when flying during the day, particularly at high levels of insolation. We monitored activity of this bat and climate simultaneously at two different sites and four times of year in American Samoa. Flight activity varied significantly with time of day, between days, study sites and seasons. Out of the six data sets collected, the four with the highest mean levels of insolation showed a significant decrease in bat numbers with increasing temperature and sunlight. When each individual activity count was directly compared to the predictions of Speakman and co-workers'' biophysical model, 85 to 95% of bat flight activity was found to be in conditions the model suggested would not pose a risk of hyperthermia. This supports the suggestion that in extreme conditions the animals would not fly as they risked overheating. The 5 to 15% of counts in which animals were seen to fly in conditions the model predicted they should not may be explained by erroneous assumptions underlying the model predictions. 相似文献

Cardiolipin (CL) is responsible for modulation of activities of various enzymes involved in oxidative phosphorylation. Although energy production decreases in heart failure (HF), regulation of cardiolipin during HF development is unknown. Enzymes involved in cardiac cardiolipin synthesis and remodeling were studied in spontaneously hypertensive HF (SHHF) rats, explanted hearts from human HF patients, and nonfailing Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. The biosynthetic enzymes cytidinediphosphatediacylglycerol synthetase (CDS), phosphatidylglycerolphosphate synthase (PGPS) and cardiolipin synthase (CLS) were investigated. Mitochondrial CDS activity and CDS-1 mRNA increased in HF whereas CDS-2 mRNA in SHHF and humans, not in SD rats, decreased. PGPS activity, but not mRNA, increased in SHHF. CLS activity and mRNA decreased in SHHF, but mRNA was not significantly altered in humans. Cardiolipin remodeling enzymes, monolysocardiolipin acyltransferase (MLCL AT) and tafazzin, showed variable changes during HF. MLCL AT activity increased in SHHF. Tafazzin mRNA decreased in SHHF and human HF, but not in SD rats. The gene expression of acyl-CoA: lysocardiolipin acyltransferase-1, an endoplasmic reticulum MLCL AT, remained unaltered in SHHF rats. The results provide mechanisms whereby both cardiolipin biosynthesis and remodeling are altered during HF. Increases in CDS-1, PGPS, and MLCL AT suggest compensatory mechanisms during the development of HF. Human and SD data imply that similar trends may occur in human HF, but not during nonpathological aging, consistent with previous cardiolipin studies. 相似文献

A food-producing role for cephalic exocrine glands has arisen independently in both taxa of highly eusocial bees, Apis and Meliponini. With several exceptions, there is little evidence that food is produced by glands of solitary bees or by most bees at lower levels of sociality. We suggest that this association with sociality is due to four adaptive features of these glands: (1) food from the glands allows feces from queens and larvae to have a small volume, (2) the queen's fecundity can be increased, (3) nutrient recovery via cannibalism can be facilitated, and (4) rearing of emergency replacement queens is accelerated. Acceleration of the rearing of other castes and of queens in the normal process of colony fission is not clearly an advantage ascribed to these glands. Trophic eggs produced by meliponine colony workers are analogous to the secretions from food-producing glands in Meliponini and Apis workers. 相似文献

The resistance of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) to droughtstress was increased when plants, grown under a 9 h light period,received a 30 min far red (FR) illumination at the beginningof the dark period. With the addition of FR light, the plantsdisplayed higher stomatal resistance and lower rate of transpiration.Therefore, with the addition of FR, the plants remained at higherleaf turgor potential during the period of drought stress whencompared to plants stressed without the FR illumination.
