Vanadium is important as an indicator of oil pollution since oil is one of the main contributors of vanadium to the environment and because most crude oils contain relatively high concentrations of vanadium (30.6 ± 14.3 mg kg–1 were measured in nine different Kuwait crudes). If oil has settled to the bottom and biodegradation has taken place, it is obvious that enrichment of vanadium in the sediment may be observed.More than 200 sampling sites were selected in the coastal zone of Kuwait and sediment samples were analyzed for grain size distribution, CaC03 content, heavy metals and TOC. The analytical results were normalized by taking into account the natural background levels of vanadium in different sediment fractions.After evaluation of the results, vanadium enrichments of as much as 10 to 77 mg kg–1 were found at 15 sampling locations and of 1 to 10 mg kg–1 at many others. The areas of vanadium enrichment in the sediments were located 3–5 km from the shoreline in the areas of wastewater discharges, near oil loading piers and in the shipping channels. There was no correlation between vanadium and TOC indicating that biodegradation of oils had taken place. However, high TOC values in the sediments were determined in the near shore sediments around the outlets.  相似文献

The Software Defined Networking (SDN) promises exciting new networking functionality. However, there is always remains a chance of programming errors that result in unreliable data communication. The centralized programming model helps decrease bugs' probability where a single controller manages the whole network. Yet, many real-time events occur at switches and end hosts, which often affect and add a delay in the communication process. One of those events includes unannounced destination host migration after installing flow rules during receiving of data packets. Such destination host movement results in the loss of packets because controller is not aware of this recent event. Therefore, we need an efficient approach to transmit packets without any packet loss despite destination host migration. This paper proposed a design to achieve the objective as mentioned above by defining a layer named Intelligent Transmission Control Layer (ITCL). It monitors all the end hosts' connections at their specific locations and performs necessary actions whenever the connection state changes for one or multiple hosts. The controller collects information of end nodes and state change through ITCL using A star search algorithm. After that, it updates flow tables accordingly to accommodate a location-change scenario with a route-change policy. ICTL is developed on prototype-based implementation using a popular POX controller platform. By comparing ITCL with the existing solution, we conclude that our proposed approach exhibits efficient performance in terms of Packet loss, Bandwidth usage, and Network Throughput.

Gibberellic acid (GA) production from milk permeate was studied by 28 mutants of Fusarium moniliforme, among which mutant gamma-14 was selected as the best producer. Experiments were carried out in shaker flasks and fermentative process was analyzed with free and immobilized cells. Immobilization of mutant gamma-14 cells onto loofa sponge discs was studied with respect to the optimization of the incubation temperature, initial pH, inoculum size (number of discs) and its reusability for GA production. Best yield of GA (2.40 gl(-1)) was recorded by immobilized cells under optimized cultural conditions (4 immobilized discs, 30 degrees C and pH 5). Data obtained during four reusable cycles showed high stability of GA production and reduction in the initiation time of acid production, resulting in higher levels of GA in shorter time duration. Immobilization of mutant gamma-14 cells onto loofa sponge discs, permitted repeated reuse under the specified fermentation conditions for GA production from milk permeate.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of Echis pyramidum (EP) venom on time-course of lipid peroxidation in different vital organs of mice. Adult male Swiss albino mice were injected with EP venom (2 mg/kg, i.p.); control mice received vehicle alone (normal saline). Mice were killed at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 h post-envenomation. The liver, lung, kidney, heart, and brain (cerebrum and cerebellum) were collected for the estimation of malondialdehyde (MDA), an index of lipid peroxidation. The results of this study showed that a single injection of EP venom caused a significant lipid peroxidation in all the organs studied. The onset of lipid peroxidation was as early as 1 h and persisted for several hours, suggesting an important role of oxidative stress in the cytotoxicity of EP venom.  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to prove that oxidative stress is the main mechanism responsible for retinal neurodegenerative changes, subsequent apoptosis, and inflammatory cytokine release in rats fed with a high cholesterol diet (HCD) and determine the role of garlic in alleviating these changes. Forty rats were equally divided into four groups: control, garlic-treated (positive control), HCD, and HCD + garlic-treated (HCD + G). By the end of the experiment (24 weeks) blood samples were collected for assessment of serum lipid profile, oxidative stress parameters, and plasma levels of IL-6 and TNF-α. Both eyes of the rats were enucleated; one was used for light microscopic examination and the other for electron microscopic examination. There was a significant increase in the levels of serum lipids, oxidative stress parameters, IL-6 and TNF-α, and area of expression of caspase-3 in the HCD group compared to both the control and HCD + G groups. Histological examination revealed degenerative changes in all layers of the neural retina in the HCD group. Garlic administration resulted in a significant improvement in the biochemical, immunohistochemical, and histological characteristics of hypercholesterolemic rats. These findings support the hypotheses that garlic has strong antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Footprinting, capillary electrophoresis, molecular modelling and NMR studies have been used to examine the binding of a short polyamide to DNA. This molecule, which contains an isopropyl-substituted thiazole in place of one of the N-methylpyrroles, is selective for the sequence 5'-ACTAGT-3' to which it binds with high affinity. Two molecules bind side-by-side in the minor groove, but their binding is staggered so that the molecule reads six base pairs, unlike the related natural products, which tend to bind to four-base-pair sequences. The result suggests that high affinity and selectivity may be gained without resort to very large molecules, which may be difficult to deliver to the site of action.  相似文献

This study focuses on the population biology of the common guitarfish Rhinobatos rhinobatos, a cartilaginous fish listed as Endangered in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Between December 2012 and January 2014, 67 individuals were collected by bottom longlining in coastal Lebanese marine waters at different ports at depths ranging from 10 to 110 m. The total length (LT) of the specimens ranged from 50 to 143 cm, and the mean ± s.d . was 76·2 ± 19·7 cm. The most common LT classes were between 60 and 70 cm. The total mass of the specimens ranged from 410 to 10 000 g, and the mean ± s.d . was 1841 ± 1987 g. A total of 34 males and 33 females were collected, and the sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1. The mass and LT relationship showed positive allometric growth (b = 3·096 and r2 = 0·99), and the mean ± s.d . LT at which 50% of the individuals were sexually mature was 84·73 ± 5·81 cm for females and 78·57 ± 4·88 cm for males. The gonado‐somatic and hepato‐somatic indices were determined along with a condition factor, and parturition appeared to occur in winter. The primary prey items found in the fish stomachs during the autumn and winter seasons were Penaeidae. The results of this study will help to parameterize models of the population dynamics for this exploited fish stock to ensure the long‐term sustainability of its fishery.  相似文献
