Eryngium regnellii Malme belongs to the largest genera in the Apiaceae family, with 250 species worldwide and 65 represented in South America. It is a herbaceous species typical of hill plant communities, which, along with remnant grassland patches, are the most relevant natural habitats for the maintenance of diversity in the Southern Pampas. Eryngium regnellii is key to the maintenance of pollination mutualisms, being a generalist (displaying a diverse assemblage of pollinators) and ubiquitous species (present in all studied sierras). However, fragmentation of the Pampean landscape due to agricultural intensification has led to the loss of natural environments. Therefore, the reintroduction of E. regnellii in strategic places would facilitate the occurrence of wild pollinators, while favoring pollination services in the agroecosystem. The germination requirements of E. regnellii were studied because a better knowledge of the reproductive biology of this species would provide information relevant to its reproduction and reintroduction into degraded areas. Germination percentages and mean time to germination were evaluated, using one control and two pre-germination treatments: chemical scarification with sulfuric acid, and mechanical scarification with sand paper. Chemical scarified seeds did not germinate. Mechanically scarified and control seed groups showed no significant differences either in germination percentages (49% and 59% respectively) or in mean germination time (13 and 14 days, respectively). Results indicate that E. regnellii shows no physical dormancy, and does not require specific pre-germination treatments for germination under the studied laboratory conditions. The high germination capacity of E. regnellii, along with its ecological attributes, make it a potential species for restoring plant-pollinator interactions in the fragmented landscapes of the Southern Pampas.  相似文献

In the production of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), nitrogen fertilization is one of the most costly crop practices, but important to reach high yields. However, high nitrogen (N) content in plants does not always translate into a high fibre production. One way of assessing the efficiency of the N fertilizer is through the enzymatic activity of the nitrate reductase (NR). This is a key enzyme in N assimilation, whose activity is regulated by a number of endogenous and exogenous factors that determine yield. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of N fertilization on yield, fibre quality, biomass, and NR enzymatic activity in vivo in the cotton variety Fiber Max 989. The evaluated application rates were 0, 50, 100, and 150 kg/ha of N, using urea as a source (46% N) in a randomizedblock design with three replicates. At harvest, the maximum yield of seed cotton and the greatest accumulation of total foliar biomass through time was reached after applying 150 kg N/ha. The different N-application rates did not affect the components of cotton-fibre quality. The activity of endogenous NR was greater on plants where 150 kg N/ha were applied. The highest cotton yield and N contents were obtained on these plants. Therefore, the NR activity in vivo could be used as a bioindicator of the N nutritional level in cotton.  相似文献

A mathematical model is presented, which describes interactions between Bt-plants and pests in terms of the plant growth rate, plant annual reseeding, consumption of plant biomass by pests, the action of Bt toxins, and the emergence of Bt-resistant insects. It has been shown that the migration of Bt-susceptible insects affects the Bt-crop yield dynamics and provides the exclusion of Bt-resistant pests if the migration exceeds the threshold value.  相似文献

The prevailing view at present is that postsynaptic expression of the classical NMDA receptor-dependent long-term potentiation relies on an increase in the numbers of local AMPA receptors (AMPARs). This is thought to parallel an expansion of postsynaptic cell specializations, for instance dendritic spine heads, which accommodate synaptic receptor proteins. However, glutamate released into the synaptic cleft can normally activate only a hotspot of low-affinity AMPARs that occur in the vicinity of the release site. How the enlargement of the AMPAR pool is causally related to the potentiated AMPAR current remains therefore poorly understood. To understand possible scenarios of postsynaptic potentiation, here we explore a detailed Monte Carlo model of the typical small excitatory synapse. Simulations suggest that approximately 50% increase in the synaptic AMPAR current could be provided by expanding the existing AMPAR pool at the expense of 100–200% new AMPARs added at the same packing density. Alternatively, reducing the inter-receptor distances by only 30–35% could achieve a similar level of current potentiation without any changes in the receptor numbers. The NMDA receptor current also appears sensitive to the NMDA receptor crowding. Our observations provide a quantitative framework for understanding the ‘resource-efficient’ ways to enact use-dependent changes in the architecture of central synapses.  相似文献

Serial semithin optical sections were used for 3D reconstruction of rat ventricular tissue. At histological resolution, older animals (18 months) were found to have regions of fibrous connective tissue not observed in young animals (2 months). The 3D data were used in mathematical modeling of excitation wave propagation in a medium containing such obstacles. The values of conductance, medium excitation threshold, and pulse repetition rate were determined whereat the model predicts rhythm disorders caused by circulation of the excitation wave.  相似文献

Morphometric electron microscope research was conducted on hippocampal slices from zone CAl in 1-month-old rats after raising extracellular glutamate concentration to 500 µM for 0.5 h and in control animals. Distributions of principal spatial parameters of presynaptic terminals (PT) were obtained using an original statistical-stereological approach. An abrupt increase was demonstrated in numbers of membrane caveolae associated with phases of vesicle recycling (averaging 13 to a single PT), and an increase in mean area of axolemma, as well as minor changes in the volume of test PT. The findings obtained are examined from the aspect of equivalent changes in the physicochemical mechanisms of endo- and exocytosis. Piracetam at a concentration of 10(-6) M was shown to behave as a noncompetitive inhibitor of 3H-imipramine specific binding to rat brain membranes. At the same time piracetam failed to influence specific binding of 3H-mianserin to membranes of guinea-pig cerebellum, which is indicative of its inability to suppress histamine H1 receptors, a component of 3H-imipramine specific binding sites. At a concentration of 10(-4) M piracetam does not change specific binding of 3H-flunitrazepam to rat hippocampal membranes in the absence of GABA, but in the presence of 5 X 10(-5) M GABA, like atypical tranquilizer mebicar, acts as a competitor of 3H-flunitrasepam binding. Though Ro-15 1788 did not suppress anxyolytic piracetam (and mebicar) effect, our results give evidence of a possible involvement of GABA-benzodiazepine supramolecular complex in the anxiolytic activity of piracetam.  相似文献

Simulation of some consequences of invasion of a Bt-resistant insect pest into an agricultural eco-system containing a Bt crop shows that such invasion alters the plant biomass dynamics, decreases the crop yield, and impairs yield predictability. The yield is poorly predictable in a small region of parameter values, which depends on the duration of the insect reproductive period relative to the crop-growing season.

There is a growing body of evidence suggesting a functional relationship between Ca2+ signals generated in astroglia and the functioning of nearby excitatory synapses. Interference with endogenous Ca2+ homeostasis inside individual astrocytes has been shown to affect synaptic transmission and its use-dependent changes. However, establishing the causal link between source-specific, physiologically relevant intracellular Ca2+ signals, the astrocytic release machinery and the consequent effects on synaptic transmission has proved difficult. Improved methods of Ca2+ monitoring in situ will be essential for resolving the ambiguity in understanding the underlying Ca2+ signalling cascades.  相似文献
