Over the last decades, the natural disturbance is increasingly putting pressure on European forests. Shifts in disturbance regimes may compromise forest functioning and the continuous provisioning of ecosystem services to society, including their climate change mitigation potential. Although forests are central to many European policies, we lack the long-term empirical data needed for thoroughly understanding disturbance dynamics, modeling them, and developing adaptive management strategies. Here, we present a unique database of >170,000 records of ground-based natural disturbance observations in European forests from 1950 to 2019. Reported data confirm a significant increase in forest disturbance in 34 European countries, causing on an average of 43.8 million m3 of disturbed timber volume per year over the 70-year study period. This value is likely a conservative estimate due to under-reporting, especially of small-scale disturbances. We used machine learning techniques for assessing the magnitude of unreported disturbances, which are estimated to be between 8.6 and 18.3 million m3/year. In the last 20 years, disturbances on average accounted for 16% of the mean annual harvest in Europe. Wind was the most important disturbance agent over the study period (46% of total damage), followed by fire (24%) and bark beetles (17%). Bark beetle disturbance doubled its share of the total damage in the last 20 years. Forest disturbances can profoundly impact ecosystem services (e.g., climate change mitigation), affect regional forest resource provisioning and consequently disrupt long-term management planning objectives and timber markets. We conclude that adaptation to changing disturbance regimes must be placed at the core of the European forest management and policy debate. Furthermore, a coherent and homogeneous monitoring system of natural disturbances is urgently needed in Europe, to better observe and respond to the ongoing changes in forest disturbance regimes.  相似文献

Approximately 15000 L of unleaded gasoline werereleased into the surrounding vadose zone from aleaking underground storage tank. Initialremediation was by soil vapor extraction andcombustion which soon became cost prohibitive, asadded propane was required to reach the combustionlimit of the extracted vapors. As a cost effectivealternative, a field-scale compost based biofilterwas used in conjunction with soil vapor extractionto remediate the vadose zone. The biofilter wasconstructed on site using 4:1 diatomaceousearth:composted horse manure. Results of a fivemonth study showed that the biofilter removedapproximately 90% of total petroleum hydrocarbons(TPH) and >90% of the BTEX compounds (benzene,toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene), achieving thestringent permit requirements set at either 90% TPHreduction or less than 1.36 kg per day of volatileorganic compounds (VOC's) released to theatmosphere. The biofilter showed the capacity toreadily adapt to changing environmental conditionssuch as increased contaminant loading, andvariations in temperature and moisture. Thebacterial population in the biofilter was uniformlydiverse throughout the biofilter, suggesting that aconsortium of bacteria was needed for efficientbiodegradation. The cost of biofilter set up andoperation saved 90% in the first year alone of theoperating expenses incurred by soil vapor extractionand combustion.  相似文献

DNA-membrane complexes have been obtained from Escherichia coli by using a freeze-thaw lysis procedure that avoids lysozyme and detergents. Complexes made in this manner and containing DNA near the origin of replication are uniquely sensitive to ionic strength, Pronase, and trypsin. There is approximately one such complex per chromosomal origin. The sensitivities suggest that origin-specific binding is mediated by a protein. By using these unique characteristics to distinguish origin-specific complexes from the majority of DNA-membrane binding sites, it was found that the origin-specific binding persists after termination of chromosomal replication.  相似文献

The synthesis of two components of the basal lamina, laminin and type IV collagen, and their extracellular deposition on the surface of myotubes was studied in cultures of embryonic mouse and quail skeletal muscle cells and in the rat myoblast cell line L6. Production of type IV collagen and laminin by myoblasts and muscle fibroblasts was demonstrated by incorporation of radioactive amino acids into proteins and by immunoprecipitation with specific antibodies and electrophoretic analysis of labeled proteins. Immunofluorescence staining experiments revealed strong intracellular reactions with antibodies to laminin and type IV collagen in mononucleated myogenic and fibrogenic cells. Cells of fibroblast-like morphology showed a more intense staining than bipolar, spindle-shaped cells which perhaps represented postmitotic myoblasts. Myotubes did not show detectable intracellular staining. The formation of a basal lamina on myotubes was indicated by the deposition of laminin and type IV collagen on the surface of myotubes as viewed by immunofluorescence examination of unfixed cells. Staining for extracellular laminin was stronger in mass cultures than in myogenic clones, suggesting that secretion and deposition of components of the basal lamina on the myotube surface are complex processes which may involve cooperation between myogenic and fibrogenic cells.  相似文献

Radioimmunoassays were developed for the basement membrane components, 7 S collagen and fragments of the noncollagenous protein laminin, which allowed quantitative analysis of as little as 0.1–0.4 ng of these proteins. Similar materials could be detected by these assays in serum, in kidney digests, and in the medium of cell cultures obtained from mice and rats. Distinct changes in the amounts of antigen in serum and kidney were observed during aging and in mice inoculated with a basement membrane tumor.  相似文献
