Invasive species can alter environments in such a way that normal behavioural decision‐making rules of native species are no longer adaptive. The evolutionary trap concept provides a useful framework for predicting and managing the impact of harmful invasive species. We discuss how native species can respond to changes in their selective regime via evolution or learning. We also propose novel management strategies to promote the long‐term co‐existence of native and introduced species in cases where the eradication of the latter is either economically or biologically unrealistic. 相似文献

The photoprotective potential of the dietary antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin E, lycopene, beta-carotene, and the rosemary polyphenol, carnosic acid, was tested in human dermal fibroblasts exposed to ultraviolet-A (UVA) light. The carotenoids were prepared in special nanoparticle formulations together with vitamin C and/or vitamin E. Nanoparticle formulations, in contrast to dimethylsulphoxide, stablized lycopene in the cell culture medium and allowed efficient cellular uptake. The presence of vitamin E in the formulation further increased the stability and cellular uptake of lycopene. UVA irradiation of the human skin fibroblasts led to a 10-15-fold rise in metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) mRNA. This rise was suppressed in the presence of low microM concentrations of vitamin E, vitamin C, or carnosic acid but not with beta-carotene or lycopene. Indeed, in the presence of 0.5-1.0 microM beta-carotene or lycopene, the UVA-induced MMP-1 mRNA was further increased by 1.5-2-fold. This increase was totally suppressed when vitamin E was included in the nanoparticle formulation. Heme-oxygenase 1 (HO-1) mRNA expression was strongly induced by UVA irradiation but none of the antioxidants inhibited this effect at the concentrations used in this study. Indeed, beta-carotene or lycopene (0.5-1.0 microM) led to a further 1.5-fold rise in the UVA-induced HO-1 mRNA levels. In conclusion, vitamin C, vitamin E, and carnosic acid showed photoprotective potential. Lycopene and beta-carotene did not protect on their own but in the presence of vitamin E, their stability in culture was improved and the rise in MMP-1 mRNA expression was suppressed, suggesting a requirement for antioxidant protection of the carotenoids against formation of oxidative derivatives that can influence the cellular and molecular responses. 相似文献

Skeletal muscle cells have been established as significant producers of IL-6 during exercise. This IL-6 production is discussed as one possible mediator of the beneficial effects of physical activity on glucose and fatty acid metabolism. IL-6 itself could be the exercise-related factor that upregulates and maintains its own production. We investigated this hypothesis and the underlying molecular mechanism in cultured C2C12 cells. IL-6 led to a rapid and prolonged increase in IL-6 mRNA, which was also found in human myotubes. Because IL-6 has been shown to activate AMP-activated kinase (AMPK), we studied whether, in turn, activated AMPK induces IL-6 expression. Pharmacological activation of AMPK with 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1--4-ribofuranoside upregulated IL-6 mRNA expression, which was blocked by knockdown of AMPK 1 and 2 using small, interfering RNA (siRNA) oligonucleotides. However, the effect of IL-6 was shown to be independent of AMPK, since the siRNA approach silencing the AMPK -subunits did not reduce the upregulation of IL-6 induced by IL-6 stimulation. The self-stimulatory effect of IL-6 partly involves a Ca2+-dependent pathway: IL-6 increased intracellular Ca2+, and intracellular blockade of Ca2+ with a Ca2+ chelator reduced the IL-6-mediated increase in IL-6 mRNA levels. Moreover, inhibition of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent kinase kinase with STO-609 or the siRNA approach decreased IL-6 mRNA levels of control and IL-6-stimulated cells. A major, STO-609-independent mechanism is the IL-6-mediated stabilization of its mRNA. Questions: Do the vegetation‐specific patterns in the forelands of river oases of the Taklamakan Desert provide clues to the degree to which a vegetation type depends on unsaturated soil moisture, brought about by extensive floodings, or phreatic water? Location: Foreland of the Qira oasis on the southern rim of the Taklamakan Desert, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Methods: A vegetation map was prepared using a SPOT satellite image and ground truthing. Measurements of soil water contents were obtained from a flooding experiment and transformed into water potentials. Sum excedance values were calculated as the percentage of days on which different thresholds of soil water potentials were transgressed. Groundwater depth was mapped by drilling 30 groundwater holes and extrapolating the distances to the whole study area. Results: The vegetation was characterized by only six dominant or codominant species: Alhagi sparsifolia, Karelinia caspia, Populus euphratica, Tamarix ramosissima, Calligonum caput‐medusae and Phragmites australis. The vegetation patterns encountered lacked any linear features typical of phreatophytes, thus not allowing direct conclusions on the type of the sustaining water sources. Soil water potentials never transgressed a threshold of pF 5 (?10 MPa) in horizons above the capillary fringe during periods without inundation, thus representing water not accessible for plants. Depth to the groundwater ranged between 2.3 and 17.5 m among plots and varied between 1.7 and 8.0 m within a plot owing to dune relief. The seven main vegetation types showed distinct niches of groundwater depths, corresponding to the observed concentric arrangement of vegetation types around the oasis. Conclusions: Inundation by flooding and unsaturated soil moisture are irrelevant for the foreland vegetation water supply. Although distances to the groundwater table can reach about 20 m, which is exceptionally large for phreatophytes, groundwater is the only water source for all vegetation types in the oasis foreland. In consequence, successful maintenance of oasis foreland vegetation will crucially depend on providing non‐declining ground water tables. 相似文献

Thrombin is a potent vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) mitogen. Because recent evidence implicates reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) in VSMC proliferation in general and atherogenesis in particular, we investigated whether ROI generation is necessary for thrombin-induced mitogenesis. Treatment of human aortic smooth muscle cells with thrombin increased DNA synthesis, an effect that was antagonized by diphenyleneiodonium but not by other inhibitors of cellular oxidase systems. This effect of thrombin was accompanied by increased O-2 and H2O2 generation and NADH/NADPH consumption. ROI generation in response to thrombin pretreatment could also be blocked by diphenyleneiodonium, suggesting that the NAD(P)H oxidase was necessary for ROI generation and thrombin-induced mitogenesis. Because of observed differences between the VSMC and neutrophil oxidase, we examined whether the cytosolic components of the phagocytic NAD(P)H oxidase were present in VSMC. p47(phox) and Rac2 were present in VSMC. Furthermore, thrombin increased expression of p47(phox) and Rac2 and stimulated their translocation to the cell membrane. We examined whether p47(phox) might be similarly regulated in vivo in a rat aorta balloon injury model and found that p47(phox) protein was increased after injury. Immunocytochemistry localized expression of p47(phox) to the neointima and media of injured arteries. Our data demonstrate that generation of O-2 and H2O2 is required for thrombin-mediated mitogenesis in VSMC and that p47(phox) is regulated by thrombin in vitro and is associated with vascular lesion formation in vivo. 相似文献

Bremia lactucae is one of the most important pathogens in lettuce production. Recent molecular?studies revealed considerable genetic variation in this species complex. However, only few accessions from the same host have been examined for most species and no study investigating the morphological distinctiveness of phylogenetic lineages of Bremia has so far been reported. Thus it is believed that morphological species delimitation in Bremia is not feasible. In the present study, multiple accessions of neglected species, which had been described decades ago, but have not been widely accepted, were investigated, considering both multi-gene phylogenies and morphological characters. All previously described species from host genera other than Lactuca investigated, Bremia microspora, Bremia ovata, Bremia saussureae, and Bremia sonchicola, could be confirmed as distinct, host-specific entities. Also, morphological characteristics of their conidiophores and conidia allowed delimitation of these species. Therefore, not only the wide species concept to merge all Bremia species on the Asteraceae under B. lactucae is inappropriate but also their delimitation on the basis of morphological characters seems feasible. In addition, it has been shown that Bremia elliptica is phylogenetically distinct from the other species infecting the genus Lactuca, B. lactucae. It is therefore concluded that B. lactucae is most likely limited to Lactuca sativa and closely-related species, and that most species of Bremia are highly host specific. This finding might stimulate the search for durable resistance genes in genera closely related to the genus Lactuca and in divergent species of the genus itself. 相似文献

Thermally activated transport and phonon scattering in P3HT:PCBM (poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl):[6,6]‐phenylC61‐butyric acid methyl ester) bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells is studied via temperature‐dependent external‐quantum‐efficiency (EQE) spectroscopy. The hopping barriers for combined exciton and charge transport are balanced for the individual blended materials in a sample, which possesses a blending ratio and a morphology that give rise to a maximal power‐conversion efficiency. Increasing the PCBM weight fraction leads to a reduction of exciton hopping barriers in PCBM, while for P3HT exciton hopping barriers remain constant. This reduction of PCBM exciton hopping barriers is attributed to a higher PCBM crystallinity in the PCBM‐rich solar cell as compared to the BHJ with the optimized blending ratio. The morphology‐dependent difference in exciton hopping activation energies between P3HT and PCBM is attributed to a higher impact of phonon scattering in P3HT than in PCBM, as concluded from the much stronger decrease of P3HT‐related temperature‐dependent external quantum efficiencies above room temperature in the PCBM‐rich BHJ solar cell. All EQE data of P3HT:PCBM‐based BHJ solar cells is modeled consistently over a broad temperature range by a simple analytical expression involving temperature activation and phonon scattering, without the need to distinguish two separate hopping regimes. 相似文献
