Oestrone Sulphate Measurements for the Prediction of Small or Large Litters in Pigs

Serum from 88 pregnant sows and gilts was sampled 24 and 28 days after their first insemination or mating day. The oestrone sulphate (E1S) concentration in the samples was assessed with a commercially available radioimmunoassay kit modified for use with swine serum. The first aim was to test whether it was possible to predict litters of total number <10 piglets at term. The second aim was to compare the use of day 24 or day 28 samples, or of both, in this prediction.     

Z-form of intraphage DNA

The bacteriophage lambda gt10 DNA containing an insertion of 20 pairs of GC-bases capable of being arranged as Z-form was cloned. Two independent methodological approaches based on the main properties of Z-form were used to study the shape of the insertion: formation of transition bridges composed of unpaired nucleotides between left-rotating Z-forms and right-rotating B-forms of helix (j-domain) and high immunogenic activity of Z-form. O-beta-diethylaminoethylhydroxyamine (OHA), an analogue of hydroxylamine, is capable of reacting specifically with unpaired cytidines. In this work this modification was used to inhibit the process of restriction at BamH1-site adjacent to (gc)10 insertion, that N-Methyl-bis(2-chloethyl) amine (MBCA) is capable of fixing the Z-form of the insertion in situ. Fixed Z-form is conserved even after DNA has been isolated from bacteriophage, thereby providing an opportunity of its identification by anti-Z-antibodies. It was shown that from 4 to 6% of the total number of insertions are in the Z-form. The hypothesis of significant role of Z-form in the process of packing of DNA molecules in capsid is put forward.     

The temperature and temperature gradients distribution in the rabbit body thermophysical model with evaporation of moisture from its surface

On created in laboratory heat-physical model of a rabbit body reflecting basic heat-physical parameters of the body such as: weight, size of a relative surface, heat absorption and heat conduction, heat capacity etc., a change of radial distribution of temperature and size was found across a superficial layer of evaporation of water from its surface, that simulates sweating, with various ratio of environmental temperature and capacity of electrical heater simulating heat production in animal. The experiments have shown that with evaporation of moisture from a surface of model in all investigated cases, there is an increase of superficial layer of body of a temperature gradient and simultaneous decrease of temperature of a model inside and on the surface. It seems that, with evaporation of a moisture from a surface of a body, the size of a temperature gradient in a thin superficial layer dependent in our experiments on capacity for heat production and environmental temperature, is increased and can be used in a live organism for definition of change in general heat content of the body with the purpose of maintenance of its thermal balance with environment.     

The concept of the parasitological typing of lakes

The parasitological typology of lakes is proposed (with example of the Karelia-Kola limnological region). The characteristics of the main types of lakes with allowance of the parasitological data are given. The parasitological typology of lakes is based on studies of the parasite fauna diversity and differs from the trophical classification for lakes proposed by S. V. Gerd (1949).

Influence of a variation potential on photosynthesis in pumpkin seedlings (Cucurbita pepo L.)

The influence of a variation potential on photosynthesis in pumpkin seedlings (Cucurbita pepo L.) was investigated in our work. It was shown that the variation potential induced by cotyledon burning propagates into a leaf. It decreases CO₂ assimilation and transpiration as well as increases nonphotochemical quenching. Investigation of isolated chloroplasts showed that lowering of the pH in incubation medium from 6.9–7.2 to 6.5 increases nonphotochemical quenching. It was proposed that lowering of the cytoplasmic pH induced by the variation potential takes place in the photosynthetic response development.     

Heat exchange of the rat in thermoneutral zone temperature and comparison with heat exchange in ambient temperature over and under it

With the help of thermonetry and general calorimetry body temperature and heat production in ambient temperatures 20 degrees C, 28 degrees C, 33 degrees C were recorded. The experiments showed, that at the temperature 20 degrees C the rectal temperature was changing very little. But in ambient temperature 33 degrees C the rectal temperature was 40.5 +/- 0.1 degrees C.
