A differential distribution of carnitine was found in twelve microdissected areas of the frozen canine brain. The cerebellar cortex showed the highest level of carnitine, while the lowest amounts were found in the hippocampus and pons sections of the brain. However, the inability to demonstrate changes in carnitine levels after stimulation of the major afferent pathways in the caudate nucleus, and failure to demonstrate K+ stimulated release of carnitine in rat brain slices suggest that carnitine does not have a direct neurotransmitter role in the brain. 相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis of all the intrageneric taxa of the genus Dioon Lindley (Zamiaceae) was undertaken by using chloroplast DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Wagner parsimony analysis on a 187 character matrix yielded two equally parsimonious trees, differing only for the position of D. caputoi. The consensus tree has two well-defined major clades. The first is composed of D. mejiae, D. rzedowskii, and D. spinulosum; the second is composed of D. califanoi, D. caputoi, D. edule var. angustifolium, D. edule var. edule, D. holmgrenii, D. merolae, D. purpusii, D. tomasellii var. sonorense, and D. tomasellii var. tomasellii. A phenetic analysis of the same data showed results broadly congruent with the cladistic analysis. This resulting phylogeny is partially congruent with morphological data and is also compatible with the biogeography of the genus. Modem species of Dioon may have evolved as a consequence of a very fast succession of vicariance events that mainly occurred during the early Cenozoic. The short time between each of these events may not have allowed the accumulation of a large number of morphological synapomorphies for the groups of species. 相似文献

The focus of the present study was to investigate the effects of a fast-start pacing strategy on running performance and pulmonary oxygen uptake () kinetics at the upper boundary of the severe-intensity domain. Eleven active male participants (28±10 years, 70±5 kg, 176±6 cm, 57±4 mL/kg/min) visited the laboratory for a series of tests that were performed until exhaustion: 1) an incremental test; 2) three laboratory test sessions performed at 95, 100 and 110% of the maximal aerobic speed; 3) two to four constant speed tests for the determination of the highest constant speed (HS) that still allowed achieving maximal oxygen uptake; and 4) an exercise based on the HS using a higher initial speed followed by a subsequent decrease. To predict equalized performance values for the constant pace, the relationship between time and distance/speed through log-log modelling was used. When a fast-start was utilized, subjects were able to cover a greater distance in a performance of similar duration in comparison with a constant-pace performance (constant pace: 670 m±22%; fast-start: 683 m±22%; P = 0.029); subjects also demonstrated a higher exercise tolerance at a similar average speed when compared with constant-pace performance (constant pace: 114 s±30%; fast-start: 125 s±26%; P = 0.037). Moreover, the mean response time was reduced after a fast start (constant pace: 22.2 s±28%; fast-start: 19.3 s±29%; P = 0.025). We report on the paleopathological analysis of the partial skeleton of the late Pliocene hominin species Australopithecus africanus Stw 431 from Sterkfontein, South Africa. A previous study noted the presence of lesions on vertebral bodies diagnosed as spondylosis deformans due to trauma. Instead, we suggest that these lesions are pathological changes due to the initial phases of an infectious disease, brucellosis. The macroscopic, microscopic and radiological appearance of the lytic lesions of the lumbar vertebrae is consistent with brucellosis. The hypothesis of brucellosis (most often associated with the consumption of animal proteins) in a 2.4 to 2.8 million year old hominid has a host of important implications for human evolution. The consumption of meat has been regarded an important factor in supporting, directing or altering human evolution. Perhaps the earliest (up to 2.5 million years ago) paleontological evidence for meat eating consists of cut marks on animal remains and stone tools that could have made these marks. Now with the hypothesis of brucellosis in A. africanus, we may have evidence of occasional meat eating directly linked to a fossil hominin. 相似文献

At variance with previous reports, the paedomorphic goby Aphia minuta does not show semelparity, but abbreviate iteroparity like other small Mediterranean gobiid species. In spring, the mature ovary contains several batches of eggs at different stages of vitellogenesis. This indicates that the breeding season of A. minuta is quite long and that spawning takes place at least twice during its short lifespan, involving in each ovulatory wave different batches of oocytes which undergo vitellogenesis at different times. These observations agree with the testicular cycle data. In males, which in spring exhibit active spermiation coinciding with deposition of the first batch of oocytes, spermatogonial mitosis also resumes, eventually resulting in the production of new sperm in summer. 相似文献
