Abstract:  The relative efficiency of cylindrical, linear and cross-barrier traps for trapping bark beetles was investigated based on a theoretical model. Using this model, the effective trap interception area of each trap type was calculated and trap efficiency was defined as the ratio of the effective interception area to the trap surface area. The relative efficiencies of the three trap types were calculated as the ratios of their respective effective interception areas. Based on this approach, assuming random directional movement of dispersing beetles, the order of efficiency of the three trap types, from highest to lowest, was linear, cross-barrier and cylindrical. The expected ratios of trap catches based on the relative efficiencies of the three trap types were fitted to data from trapping experiments with the mountain pine beetle ( Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins). In general, there was large variation in trap catches among traps of the same type but the ratios of mean catches per trap conformed to the expected ratios. The results indicate that the model of trap efficiency could be used for designing efficient traps. The methods presented are amenable for assessing the efficiency of other trap designs.  相似文献

BackgroundBarrett''s esophagus (BE) is a commonly undiagnosed condition that predisposes to esophageal adenocarcinoma. Routine endoscopic screening for BE is not recommended because of the burden this would impose on the health care system. The objective of this study was to determine whether a novel approach using a minimally invasive cell sampling device, the Cytosponge, coupled with immunohistochemical staining for the biomarker Trefoil Factor 3 (TFF3), could be used to identify patients who warrant endoscopy to diagnose BE.ConclusionsThe Cytosponge-TFF3 test is safe and acceptable, and has accuracy comparable to other screening tests. This test may be a simple and inexpensive approach to identify patients with reflux symptoms who warrant endoscopy to diagnose BE.  相似文献

A variety of syn-vivo bioerosion traces produced by foraminiferans is recorded in shells of Nautilus sampled near New Caledonia and Vanuatu. These are two types of attachment scars of epilithic foraminiferans and two forms of previously undescribed microborings, a spiral-shaped and a dendritic one, both most likely being the work of endolithic ''naked'' foraminiferans. Scanning electron microscopy of epoxy-resin casts of the latter revealed that these traces occur in clusters of up to many dozen individuals and potentially are substrate-specific. The foraminiferan traces are the sole signs of bioerosion in the studied Nautilus conchs, and neither traces of phototrophic nor other chemotrophic microendoliths were found. While the complete absence of photoautotrophic endoliths would be in good accordance with the life habit of Nautilus, which resides in aphotic deep marine environments and seeks shallower waters in the photic zone for feeding only during night-time, the absence of any microbial bioerosion may also be explained by an effective defence provided by the nautilid periostracum. Following this line of reasoning, the recorded foraminiferan bioerosion traces in turn would identify their trace makers as being specialized in their ability to penetrate the periostracum barrier and to bioerode the shell of modern Nautilus.  相似文献

Background

Large epidemiologic studies have the potential to make valuable contributions to the assessment of gene-environment interactions because they prospectively collected detailed exposure data. Some of these studies, however, have only serum or plasma samples as a low quantity source of DNA.

Methods

We examined whether DNA isolated from serum can be used to reliably and accurately genotype single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) using Sequenom multiplex SNP genotyping technology. We genotyped 81 SNPs using samples from 158 participants in the NYU Women’s Health Study. Each participant had DNA from serum and at least one paired DNA sample isolated from a high quality source of DNA, i.e. clots and/or cell precipitates, for comparison.

Results

We observed that 60 of the 81 SNPs (74%) had high call frequencies (≥95%) using DNA from serum, only slightly lower than the 85% of SNPs with high call frequencies in DNA from clots or cell precipitates. Of the 57 SNPs with high call frequencies for serum, clot, and cell precipitate DNA, 54 (95%) had highly concordant (>98%) genotype calls across all three sample types. High purity was not a critical factor to successful genotyping.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that this multiplex SNP genotyping method can be used reliably on DNA from serum in large-scale epidemiologic studies.  相似文献

In addition to mitochondria, BCL‐2 is located at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) where it is a constituent of several distinct complexes. Here, we identify the BCL‐2‐interacting protein at the ER, nutrient‐deprivation autophagy factor‐1 (NAF‐1)—a bitopic integral membrane protein whose defective expression underlies the aetiology of the neurodegenerative disorder Wolfram syndrome 2 (WFS2). NAF‐1 contains a two iron–two sulphur coordinating domain within its cytosolic region, which is necessary, but not sufficient for interaction with BCL‐2. NAF‐1 is displaced from BCL‐2 by the ER‐restricted BH3‐only protein BIK and contributes to regulation of BIK‐initiated autophagy, but not BIK‐dependent activation of caspases. Similar to BCL‐2, NAF‐1 is found in association with the inositol 1,4,5‐triphosphate receptor and is required for BCL‐2‐mediated depression of ER Ca2+ stores. During nutrient deprivation as a physiological stimulus of autophagy, BCL‐2 is known to function through inhibition of the autophagy effector and tumour suppressor Beclin 1. NAF‐1 is required in this pathway for BCL‐2 at the ER to functionally antagonize Beclin 1‐dependent autophagy. Thus, NAF‐1 is a BCL‐2‐associated co‐factor that targets BCL‐2 for antagonism of the autophagy pathway at the ER.  相似文献
