The pollen wall of Canna generalis Bailey is exceptionally thick, but only a minor part of it contains detectable amounts of sporopollenin. The sporopollenin is in isolated spinules at the exine surface and in the intine near the plasma membrane. There is no sporopollenin in the > 10 μ thick channeled region between spinules and intine. We suggest that the entire pollen wall of C. generalis is similar to the thick intine and thin exine typical for germinal apertures in many pollen grain types. Considered functionally, the Canna pollen wall may offer an infinite number of sites for pollen tube initiation and would differ significantly from grains that are inaperturate in the sense of an exine lacking definite germinal apertures. 相似文献

A portable unit was developed to provide uniform irradiation of the human testes. The device had built-in radiological protection and provided a dosage independent of the subject geometry, uniform to within +or- 5%. Single doses, between 8-600 rad were administered to the testes of human subjects. Observations were made both before and following irradiation. Parameters evaluated included sperm concentration, motility and morphology, seminal fluid volume, plasma and urinary gonadotropin and testosterone levels, urinary estrogens, and comparison of testicular biopsies taken before and after irradiation in the same subject. Although acoustic signals are important for communication in many taxa, signal propagation is affected by environmental properties. Strong environmental constraints should drive call evolution, favoring signals with greater transmission distance and content integrity in a given calling habitat. Yet, few empirical studies have verified this prediction, possibly due to a shortcoming in habitat characterization, which is often too broad. Here we assess the potential impact of environmental constraints on the evolution of advertisement call in four groups of torrent‐dwelling frogs in the family Ranidae. We reconstruct the evolution of calling site preferences, both broadly categorized and at a finer scale, onto a phylogenetic tree for 148 species with five markers (~3600 bp). We test models of evolution for six call traits for 79 species with regard to the reconstructed history of calling site preferences and estimate their ancestral states. We find that in spite of existing morphological constraints, vocalizations of torrent‐dwelling species are most probably constrained by the acoustic specificities of torrent habitats and particularly their high level of ambient noise. We also show that a fine‐scale characterization of calling sites allows a better perception of the impact of environmental constraints on call evolution. 相似文献

We have modified gradient HPLC procedures for simultaneous quantification of retinol, γ-tocopherol, α-tocopherol, lutein/zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, trans-lycopene, cis-lycopene, α-carotene and β-carotene in 200-μl aliquots of human plasma. The photosensitivity of these analytes in plasma exposed to fluorescent lighting for up to 72 h was investigated and most were stable under these conditions. The stability of these analytes held in darkness at −20°C, 4°C or room temperature for up to 48 h after extraction from plasma was also investigated. Variability in measurement of most analytes was greater at room temperature than at 4°C or −20°C. There were statistically significant variations in the measured concentrations of some analytes in samples kept cold. However, the magnitude of these variations was small and of little biological significance, particularly over the first 24 h. 相似文献
