In finite populations, linkage disequilibria generated by the interaction of drift and directional selection (Hill-Robertson effect) can select for sex and recombination, even in the absence of epistasis. Previous models of this process predict very little advantage to recombination in large panmictic populations. In this article we demonstrate that substantial levels of linkage disequilibria can accumulate by drift in the presence of selection in populations of any size, provided that the population is subdivided. We quantify (i) the linkage disequilibrium produced by the interaction of drift and selection during the selective sweep of beneficial alleles at two loci in a subdivided population and (ii) the selection for recombination generated by these disequilibria. We show that, in a population subdivided into n demes of large size N, both the disequilibrium and the selection for recombination are equivalent to that expected in a single population of a size intermediate between the size of each deme (N) and the total size (nN), depending on the rate of migration among demes, m. We also show by simulations that, with small demes, the selection for recombination is stronger than both that expected in an unstructured population (m = 1 - 1/n) and that expected in a set of isolated demes (m = 0). Indeed, migration maintains polymorphisms that would otherwise be lost rapidly from small demes, while population structure maintains enough local stochasticity to generate linkage disequilibria. These effects are also strong enough to overcome the twofold cost of sex under strong selection when sex is initially rare. Overall, our results show that the stochastic theories of the evolution of sex apply to a much broader range of conditions than previously expected.  相似文献

Intraventricular injections of the fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) are known to increase the size of the optic tectum in embryonic chicks. Here we show that this increase in tectum size is due to a delay in tectal neurogenesis, which by definition extends the proliferation of tectal progenitors. Specifically, we use cumulative labeling with the thymidine analog EdU to demonstrate that FGF2 treatment on embryonic day 4 (ED4) reduces the proportion and absolute number of unlabeled cells in the rostroventral tectum when EdU infusions are begun on ED5, as one would expect if FGF2 retards tectal neurogenesis. We also examined FGF2′s effect on neurogenesis in the caudodorsal tectum, which is born 2-3 days after the rostroventral tectum, by combining FGF2 treatment on ED4 with EDU infusions beginning on ED8. Again, FGF2 treatment reduced the proportion and number of EdU-negative (i.e., unlabeled) cells, consistent with a delay in neurogenesis. Collectively, these data indicate FGF2 in embryonic chicks delays neurogenesis throughout much of the tectum and continues to do so for several days after the FGF2 injection. One effect of this delay in neurogenesis is that tectal cell numbers more than double. In addition, tectal laminae that are born early in development become abnormally thin and cell-sparse after FGF2 treatment, whereas late-born layers remain unaffected. Combined with the results of prior work, these data indicate that FGF2 delays tectal neurogenesis and, thereby, triggers a cascade of changes in tectum size and morphology.  相似文献

Objective

To evaluate the relationship of children’s obesity and dental decay.

Methods

We measured parameters related to obesity and dental decay in 8,275 4th and 5th grade Kuwaiti children (average age = 11.36 years) in a cross-sectional study. First to determine body weight, height, age for computation of BMI . Second, to determine numbers of teeth, numbers of fillings and numbers of untreated decayed teeth to determine extent and severity of dental disease. From these measurements, we computed measures of dental decay in children from four body weight categories; obese, overweight, normal healthy weight and underweight children.

Results

The percentage of children with decayed or filled teeth varied inversely with the body weight category. The percentage of decayed or filled teeth decreased from 15.61% (n=193) in underweight children, to 13.03% (n=4,094) in normal healthy weight children, to 9.73% (n=1,786) in overweight children to 7.87% (n=2,202) in obese children. Differences between all groups were statistically significant. Male children in this population had more dental decay than female children but the reduction of tooth decay as a function of BMI was greater in male children.

Conclusions

The finding of an inverse obesity-dental decay relationship contradicts the obesity-sugar and the obesity-dental decay relationship hypotheses. Sugar is well recognized as necessary and sufficient for dental decay. Sugar is also hypothesized to be a leading co-factor in obesity. If the later hypothesis is true, one would expect dental decay to increase with obesity. This was not found. The reasons for this inverse relationship are not currently clear.  相似文献

Evolutionary responses are required for tree populations to be able to track climate change. Results of 250 years of common garden experiments show that most forest trees have evolved local adaptation, as evidenced by the adaptive differentiation of populations in quantitative traits, reflecting environmental conditions of population origins. On the basis of the patterns of quantitative variation for 19 adaptation‐related traits studied in 59 tree species (mostly temperate and boreal species from the Northern hemisphere), we found that genetic differentiation between populations and clinal variation along environmental gradients were very common (respectively, 90% and 78% of cases). Thus, responding to climate change will likely require that the quantitative traits of populations again match their environments. We examine what kind of information is needed for evaluating the potential to respond, and what information is already available. We review the genetic models related to selection responses, and what is known currently about the genetic basis of the traits. We address special problems to be found at the range margins, and highlight the need for more modeling to understand specific issues at southern and northern margins. We need new common garden experiments for less known species. For extensively studied species, new experiments are needed outside the current ranges. Improving genomic information will allow better prediction of responses. Competitive and other interactions within species and interactions between species deserve more consideration. Despite the long generation times, the strong background in quantitative genetics and growing genomic resources make forest trees useful species for climate change research. The greatest adaptive response is expected when populations are large, have high genetic variability, selection is strong, and there is ecological opportunity for establishment of better adapted genotypes.  相似文献

New Caledonia is an important biodiversity hotspot with much undocumented biodiversity, especially in many insect groups. Here we used an integrative approach to explore species diversity in the tenebrionid genus Uloma (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae, Ulomini), which encompasses about 150 species, of which 22 are known from New Caledonia. To do so, we focused on a morphologically homogeneous group by comparing museum specimens with material collected during several recent field trips. We also conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses based on a concatenated matrix of four mitochondrial and three nuclear genes for 46 specimens. The morphological study allowed us to discover and describe four new species that belong to the group of interest, the Uloma isoceroides group. Molecular analyses confirmed the species boundaries of several of the previously described species and established the validity of the four new species. The phylogenetic analyses also provided additional information on the evolutionary history of the group, highlighting that a species that was thought to be unrelated to the group was in fact a member of the same evolutionary lineage. Molecular species delimitation confirmed the status of the sampled species of the group and also suggested some hidden (cryptic) biodiversity for at least two species of the group. Altogether this integrative taxonomic approach has allowed us to better define the boundaries of the Uloma isoceroides species group, which comprises at least 10 species: Uloma isoceroides (Fauvel, 1904), Uloma opacipennis (Fauvel, 1904), Uloma caledonica Kaszab, 1982, Uloma paniei Kaszab, 1982, Uloma monteithi Kaszab, 1986, Uloma robusta Kaszab, 1986, Uloma clamensae sp. n., Uloma condaminei sp. n., Uloma jourdani sp. n., and Uloma kergoati sp. n. We advocate more studies on other New Caledonian groups, as we expect that much undocumented biodiversity can be unveiled through the use of similar approaches.  相似文献

The pervasiveness of mobile devices, which is increasing daily, is generating a vast amount of geo-located data allowing us to gain further insights into human behaviors. In particular, this new technology enables users to communicate through mobile social media applications, such as Twitter, anytime and anywhere. Thus, geo-located tweets offer the possibility to carry out in-depth studies on human mobility. In this paper, we study the use of Twitter in transportation by identifying tweets posted from roads and rails in Europe between September 2012 and November 2013. We compute the percentage of highway and railway segments covered by tweets in 39 countries. The coverages are very different from country to country and their variability can be partially explained by differences in Twitter penetration rates. Still, some of these differences might be related to cultural factors regarding mobility habits and interacting socially online. Analyzing particular road sectors, our results show a positive correlation between the number of tweets on the road and the Average Annual Daily Traffic on highways in France and in the UK. Transport modality can be studied with these data as well, for which we discover very heterogeneous usage patterns across the continent.  相似文献

Delayed selfing allows self-fertile organisms to reproduce even in the absence of mate, and is thought to have evolved as a reproductive assurance strategy. In animal species with strong inbreeding depression, the time during which selfing should be postponed in the absence of mates (referred to as the waiting time) is predicted to have evolved as a function of inbreeding depression, resource reallocation and survival. Under the same theoretical perspective, variation in population density should trigger the evolution of a plastic adjustment of the waiting time. A condition is that individuals should be able to perceive environmental cues (e.g. chemicals) of the density of potential mates. These predictions were tested here using the hermaphroditic freshwater snail Physa acuta , based on two experiments in which rearing water was conditioned such as to manipulate the probability of mate encounter through chemical signals emitted by snails. First, a choice trial experiment showed that the exploration behaviour of individuals is sensible to chemical signals. The second experiment aimed at documenting fitness components (age at first reproduction, growth before and after reproduction, and fecundity over a three-week period) under five treatments (20 individuals per treatment) with different water-conditioning and access to mate. As predicted theoretically, this experiment detected the occurrence of a waiting time (11 days) and resource reallocation to growth when comparing individuals from pure water (no chemicals) and outcrossing individuals. However, the waiting time and resource reallocation to future fecundity did not increase with increasing chemical cues of conspecifics density. There is therefore no evidence that delayed selfing is plastic and adjusted according to mate encounter probability.  相似文献

Epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (EET) and thromboxane A(2) are arachidonic acid derivatives. The former has initially been defined as an epithelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor displaying broncho-relaxing and anti-inflammatory properties, as recently demonstrated, whereas thromboxane A(2) induces vaso- and bronchoconstriction upon binding to thromboxane-prostanoid (TP)-receptor. EETs, however, are quickly degraded by the soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) into inactive diol compounds. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 14,15-EET on TP-receptor activation in human bronchi. Tension measurements performed on native bronchi from various species, acutely treated with increasing 14,15-EET concentrations, revealed specific and concentration-dependent relationships as well as a decrease in the tension induced by 30 nM U-46619, used as a synthetic TP-receptor agonist. Interestingly, acute treatments with 3 μM N-(methylsulfonyl)-2-(2-propynyloxy)-benzenehexanamide, an epoxygenase inhibitor, which minimizes endogenous production of EET, resulted in an increased reactivity to U-46619. Furthermore, we demonstrated that chronic treatments with trans-4-[4-(3-adamantan-1-yl-ureido)-cyclohexyloxy]-benzoic acid (t-AUCB), a sEH inhibitor, reduced human bronchi reactivity to U-46619. During our tension measurements, we also observed that human bronchi generated small-amplitude contractions; these spontaneous activities were reduced upon acute 14,15-EET treatments in the presence of t-AUCB. Altogether, these data demonstrate that endogenous and exogenous 14,15-EET could interfere with the activation of TP-receptors as well as with spontaneous oscillations in human airway smooth muscle tissues.  相似文献
