Experimental salmon thrombin/fibrinogen dressings have been shown to provide effective hemostasis in severe hemorrhage situations. The hypothesis for this study was that swine would still remain healthy without coagulopathy six months after exposure to salmon thrombin/fibrinogen dressings. Initial exposure was by insertion of the salmon dressing into the peritoneal cavity. Three months after the initial exposure, the same animals were subjected to two full thickness dermal wounds on the dorsal surface. One wound was bandaged with the salmon thrombin/fibrinogen bandage and the other wound was dressed with a standard bandage. The animals were monitored for an additional three months. Blood was drawn every 14 days over the six months for immunological and coagulation function analysis. All of the animals (8 pigs) remained healthy during the six month period and the dermal wounds healed without incidence. Lymph nodes and spleen showed signs of normal immune response and Western blots showed development of antibodies against salmon fibrinogen, but none of the animals made antibodies that recognized any species of thrombin. Coagulation parameters (fibrinogen concentration, thrombin time, PT and aPTT) and hematological parameters remained normal over the course of the study when compared to initial values of the subject swine. 相似文献

Basophil and eosinophil leucocytes infiltrate the small intestinal lamina propria of guinea-pigs infected with the nematode Trichostrongylus colubriformis. By comparing the morphology of both cell types at the site of infection with bone marrow and buffy coat cells, it was found that, after entering the lamina propria, basophils developed an electron lucent halo beneath the granule-limiting membrane while the characteristic orderly periodicity of the granules changed to a fibrillar or amorphous appearance. The granules also tended to coalesce but remained within the cell. Approximately half the eosinophils at the site of infection developed deficiencies in the amorphous outer matrix of their granules but showed no obvious change in the central electron-dense cores. 相似文献

A stage‐structured Leslie matrix model of a partial, discrete population of Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus) (Ixodida: Ixodidae) ticks was developed to elucidate the impact of climate trends on the distribution and phenology of this species in the western Palaearctic. The model calculates development and mortality rates for each instar and evaluates recruitment rates based on the development of the tick population. The model captures the changes in development and mortality rates, providing a coherent index of performance correlated with the tick's geographic range. Maximum development rates are recorded for latitudes south of 36 °N and are spatially correlated with sites of maximum temperature, highest saturation deficit and highest mortality. The maximum available developmental time (the total annual time during which temperature allows development) for I. ricinus in the western Palaearctic is < 45% of the total year. North of 60 °N, available developmental time decreases sharply to only 15% of the year. The latitudinal boundary at which survival rates sharply drop is 43–46 °N, clearly delimiting the classically recognized extent of the main tick populations. The pattern of activity for larval–nymphal synchrony shows a clear west–east pattern. The model demonstrates the impact of climate according to tick stage and geographic location, and provides a practical framework for testing how the tick's lifecycle is affected by climate change. 相似文献

Buds of Claytonia virginica were examined from 9 locations in the metropolitan New York area. A large amount of meiotic irregularity was characteristic of the populations studied. Chromosome counts on pollen mother cells were higher than any reported previously for the taxon, which contains an extensive aneuploid series including at least 40 different numbers ranging from 2n = 12 to ca. 190. In one New Jersey population, plants having approximately 90 chromosomes were associated with those having only 16. All the observations indicated that Claytonia virginica is an unusual species with an ability to tolerate fluctuations in chromosome material without apparent effects on fertility and morphology. 相似文献

Fifty-two taxa of living and extinct vascular plants were evaluated in an unconstrained numerical cladistic analysis using
101 morphological characters to simultaneously resolve the phylogenetic relationships of ferns sensu lato. Included in the
analysis were ferns assignable to the Cladoxylales, Stauropteridales, Rhacophytales, Zygopteridales, Ophioglossales, Marattiales,
Filicales, and Hydropteridales, as well as a rhyniophyte, a trimerophyte, equisetophytes, lignophytes, and the psilotophytesPsilotum andTmesipteris. The results placed ferns and fernlike plants in three distinct clades, indicating that ferns s.l. are a polyphyletic grade
group. Fern clades consist of extinct stauropterids; extinct cladoxylaleans, rhacophytaleans, and zygopteridaleans; and eusporangiates
and leptosporangiates with living and extinct species. Psilotophytes occur near the base of the tree rather than nesting with
the Filicales, as hypothesized by some. These results place Ophioglossales as the sister group to Marattiales plus the leptosporangiates,
supporting the hypothesis that Ophioglossales represent ferns rather than progymnosperms. These analyses are a first attempt,
which includes extinct plants, to develop cladistic hypotheses for the overall topology of fern phylogeny and to lay the groundwork

Monoletes pollen extracted from the seed fern synangium Dolerotheca sclerotica Baxter illustrate four stages in the development of the sporoderm. In the first stage the grains are up to 100 μm long and possess an apparent homogeneous exine in which there is little differentiation between the nexine and sexine. Numerous nexine lamellae and the initiation of sexine expansion mark stage 2 in exine ontogeny. Further expansion of the sexine continues in the third stage until the ratio between the nexine and sexine is approximately 1:5. The final stage in maturation of the sporoderm shows an expanded alveolate sexine with some of the sporopollenin units broken and disorganized. It is at this stage of development that nexine lamellae are most prominent. The formation of sporoderm layers in the fossil grains is compared with pollen grain development in living cycads (Cycadophyta) and a model proposed to account for the apparent early formation of nexine lamellae in Monoletes. A megasporangiate fructification has been discovered in dysoxic, offshore marine shales from Upper Pennsylvanian deposits of northcentral Texas. This specimen, described as Suavitas imbricata gen. et sp. nov., consists of imbricating, helically arranged sporophylls that diverge from a stout axis. The axis is characterized by parenchymatous pith and weakly developed vascular tissue. Sporangia are terminal with a horizontally elongated, apical dehiscence slit. There is one large functional megaspore in each sporangium, and the megaspore wall is constructed of interconnected rodlets. Parsimony analysis indicates that Suavitas may be related to rhizomorphic lycophytes. The unique combination of characters displayed by this species illustrates the central role played by extinct species in characterizing overall patterns of plant relationships, and emphasizes the uniqueness of plant communities from extrabasinal habitats during the late Paleozoic. 相似文献

Resting oxygen consumption corrected for body size, increased in young marsupials (Bennett's Wallaby) with body weights of 50-400 g. Up to 250 g body wt injections of noradrenaline caused either a fall or no change in metabolic rate, but above this age a significant rise was evoked.
