All epidermal cells in root tips of panicoid grasses have been considered to be capable of hair formation. Observations made in this investigation suggested that cells of two maturation potentials may be present in the root-tip epidermis of Panicum virgatum. Protein bodies which swell and fuse in the region of elongation were revealed in the meristem of this grass by different staining procedures. In many roots not all cells seemed to receive the same amount of these bodies or of the protein-positive material which appeared to arise from them. Only deeply stained cells with large nucleoli were seen to form hairs. Epidermal cells of very hairy roots contained uniform nucleoli and exhibited similar distributions of protein material. The protein positive inclusions were never found in the cortex, a region of cells with one maturation potential. Following chloramphenicol treatment, root tips were found to contain epidermal cells with nucleoli of similar size, a reduced amount of protein bodies, and a reduction in the number of root hairs. RNase treatment did not appear to affect the integrity of the inclusions. The significance of such protein bodies is discussed in relation to differentiation of epidermal cells in P. virgatum.  相似文献

Numerous specimens of the pteridospermous pollen organs Idanothekion glandulosum and Callandrium callistophytoides are present in Middle and Upper Pennsylvanian petrifaction material, respectively. Several specimens of Idanothekion, previously known only in an isolated condition, are attached to foliage assignable to the monostelic seed fern Callistophyton. Proof of the affinities of Idanothekion allows this genus to be elevated from a form genus to an organ genus in the Callistophytaceae. The structure of the foliage and the mode of attachment of the Idanothekion specimens are like those previously described for Callandrium. Structural features of Idanothekion and Callandrium are compared, and the question of their identity is discussed. At present one basic type of pollen organ, borne on the abaxial surface of foliar pinnules, is known for members of the Callistophytaceae.  相似文献

A breed-specific polymyositis is frequently observed in the Hungarian Vizsla. Beneficial clinical response to immunosuppressive therapies has been demonstrated which points to an immune-mediated aetiology. Canine inflammatory myopathies share clinical and histological similarities with the human immune-mediated myopathies. As MHC class II associations have been reported in the human conditions we investigated whether an MHC class II association was present in the canine myopathy seen in this breed. 212 Hungarian Vizsla pedigree dogs were stratified both on disease status and degree of relatedness to an affected dog. This generated a group of 29 cases and 183 “graded” controls: 93 unaffected dogs with a first degree affected relative, 44 unaffected dogs with a second degree affected relative, and 46 unaffected dogs with no known affected relatives. Eleven DLA class II haplotypes were identified, of which, DLA-DRB1*02001/DQA1*00401/DQB1*01303, was at significantly raised frequency in cases compared to controls (OR = 1.92, p = 0.032). When only control dogs with no family history of the disease were compared to cases, the association was further strengthened (OR = 4.08, p = 0.00011). Additionally, a single copy of the risk haplotype was sufficient to increase disease risk, with the risk substantially increasing for homozygotes. There was a trend of increasing frequency of this haplotype with degree of relatedness, indicating low disease penetrance. These findings support the hypothesis of an immune-mediated aetiology for this canine myopathy and give credibility to potentially using the Hungarian Vizsla as a genetic model for comparative studies with human myositis.  相似文献

Germination of Ginkgo biloba seeds with intact and removed sarcotesta was compared to test the role of the seed coat in germination biology. The presence of an intact sarcotesta significantly reduced total germination percentage when compared to seeds with the sarcotesta removed. Some seeds were also cold stratified. This treatment was not necessary for germination, but it did improve total germination percentage. The seeds were collected during the period of natural abscission. Contrary to the accepted literature, we found that Ginkgo seeds contain well-developed embryos at the time of dispersal. These data demonstrate that the seed coat contributes to winter dormancy of G. biloba, and that the phenology of this species is less primitive than popularly believed.  相似文献

Filicalean frond segments bearing indusiate sori with gradate development have been discovered in Pennsylvanian deposits of eastern North America. The specimens combine characters of Schizaeaceae, Gleicheniaceae, Cyatheaceae and Hymenophyllaceae, and together with data from other sources, indicate that the Filicales were in the midst of an evolutionary radiation during the late Paleozoic. Evidence from fossil and extant species prompts the hypothesis that filicalean ferns originated near the base of the Carboniferous, and have undergone three major evolutionary radiations.  相似文献

Three types of anatomically preserved vegetative shoots with features that characterize crown group Equisetum have been discovered in Lower Cretaceous deposits (≈136 Ma) of British Columbia, Canada, suggesting the genus is much older than currently believed. Specimens include two types of aerial shoots described as E. haukeanum sp. nov. and E. vancouverense sp. nov. and one type of subterranean rhizome. Shoots are 1-2 mm in diameter, jointed, and in cross section have fluted stems with a hollow pith. Distinctive patterns of cortical sclerenchyma and different ridge morphologies characterize each shoot morphotype. Nodes display irregular branching, highly fused leaf sheaths, and a nodal diaphragm. The aerial stem morphospecies have vallecular canals on alternating radii with carinal canals of an equisetostele surrounded by only a few tracheids. No secondary tissues are produced. Bands of surficial stomata flank the furrows of one morphospecies. Rhizomes and aerial shoots are of a similar size, suggesting that the plants were equivalent in stature to the smallest living Equisetum species. These fossils augment our understanding of evolutionary transformations that led from Paleozoic Archaeocalamitaceae and Calamitaceae to crown group Equisetaceae, suggesting that the initial diversification of Equisetum began far earlier than suggested by molecular-clock-based estimates.  相似文献

Interleukin (IL)-1 expression is induced rapidly in response to diverse CNS insults and is a key mediator of experimentally induced neuronal injury. However, the mechanisms of IL-1-induced neurotoxicity are unknown. The aim of the present study was to examine the toxic effects of IL-1 on rat cortical cell cultures. Treatment with IL-1beta did not affect the viability of pure cortical neurones. However, IL-1 treatment of cocultures of neurones with glia or purified astrocytes induced caspase activation resulting in neuronal death. Neuronal cell death induced by IL-1 was prevented by pre-treatment with the IL-1 receptor antagonist, the broad spectrum caspase inhibitor Boc-Asp-(OMe)-CH(2)F or the antioxidant alpha-tocopherol. The NMDA receptor antagonist dizolcipine (MK-801) attenuated cell death induced by low doses of IL-1beta but the alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionic acid receptor antagonist 2,3-dihydroxy-6-nitro-7-sulfamoyl-benzo(F)quinoxaline (NBQX) had no effect. Inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase with N(omega)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester had no effect on neuronal cell death induced by IL-1beta. Thus, IL-1 activates the IL-1 type 1 receptor in astrocytes to induce caspase-dependent neuronal death, which is dependent on the release of free radicals and may contribute to neuronal cell death in CNS diseases.  相似文献

Background and aims

Liming is considered normal agricultural practise for remediating soil acidity and improving crop productivity; however recommended lime applications can reduce yield. We tested the hypothesis that elevated xylem sap Ca2+ limited gas exchange of Phaseolus vulgaris L. and Pisum sativum L. plants that exhibited reduced shoot biomass and leaf area when limed.

Methods

We used Scholander and whole-plant pressure chamber techniques to collect root and leaf xylem sap, a calcium-specific ion-selective electrode to measure xylem sap Ca2+, infra-red gas analysis to measure gas exchange of limed and unlimed (control) plants, and a detached leaf transpiration bioassay to determine stomatal sensitivity to Ca2+.

Results

Liming reduced shoot biomass, leaf area and leaf gas exchange in both species. Root xylem sap Ca2+ concentration was only increased in P. vulgaris and not in P. sativum. Detached leaves of both species required 5 mM Ca2+ supplied to via the transpiration stream to induce stomatal closure, however, maximum in vivo xylem sap Ca2+ concentrations of limed plants was only 1.7 mM and thus not high enough to influence stomata.

Conclusion

We conclude that an alternative xylem-borne antitranspirant other than Ca2+ decreases gas exchange of limed plants.  相似文献

When saccading to a silent clock, observers sometimes think that the second hand has paused momentarily. This effect has been termed chronostasis and occurs because observers overestimate the time that they have seen the object of an eye movement. They seem to extrapolate its appearance back to just prior to the onset of the saccade rather than the time that it is actually fixated on the retina. Here, we describe a similar effect following an arm movement: subjects overestimate the time that their hand has been in contact with a newly touched object. The illusion's magnitude suggests backward extrapolation of tactile perception to a moment during the preceding reach. The illusion does not occur if the arm movement triggers a change in a continuously visible visual target: the time of onset of the change is estimated correctly. We hypothesize that chronostasis-like effects occur when movement produces uncertainty about the onset of a sensory event. Under these circumstances, the time at which neurons with receptive fields that shift in the temporal vicinity of a movement change their mappings may be used as a time marker for the onset of perceptual properties that are only established later.  相似文献
