Questions: (1) What is the recovery potential of soil seed banks of intact, average and degraded floodplain woodlands? (2) Will soil seed banks of different functional groups (native and exotic, dryland and wetland) display contrasting responses to site degradation? Location: Semi‐arid, seasonally flooded woodland of eastern Australia. Methods: Diversity, abundance and composition of soil seed banks were assessed using a glasshouse study. Surface soil samples were taken from a total of nine sites with three levels of degradation (intact, average, degraded) from three microsites (sub‐canopy, canopy edge, open). Results: A total of 26 662 individuals of 82 species germinated. Seed abundance increased tenfold from intact to degraded sites, but there was no effect on richness. Species composition of all functional groups varied significantly among degradation states. Seeds of native wetland and exotic dryland species were more abundant in degraded than in intact sites. However, the abundance of native dryland germinants did not differ among degradation classes and no seeds of exotic wetland species were observed. Richness of exotic dryland species was significantly higher in degraded sites. Conclusions: Increasing disturbance promoted seed banks of exotic but not native dryland species and native but not exotic wetland species. Unexpectedly, disturbance promoted the abundance of native seeds more than exotics, although this was driven by a single species. Our results suggest that the dryland phase of the floodplain community is more resilient to degradation than predicted.  相似文献

Temporal variation in the abundance of the encephalitis virus vector mosquito, Culex tarsalis Coquillet, was linked significantly with coincident and antecedent measures of regional climate, including temperature, precipitation, snow pack, and the El Ni?o/Southern Oscillation anomaly. Although variable among traps, historical records that spanned two to five decades revealed climate influences on spring and summer mosquito abundance as early as the previous fall through early summer. Correlations between winter and spring precipitation and snow pack and spring Cx. tarsalis abundance were stronger than correlations with summer abundance. Spring abundance was also correlated positively with winter and spring temperature, whereas summer abundance correlated negatively with spring temperature and not significantly with summer temperature. Correlations with antecedent climate provide the opportunity to forecast vector abundance and therefore encephalitis virus risk, a capability useful in intervention decision support systems at local and state levels.  相似文献

Treatment with Sendai virus does affect the lateral mobility of cell surface components on cultured human cells (KB) and cultured mouse cells (3T3). Diffusion coefficients and mobile fractions of a fluorescent lipid analog, tetramethyl rhodamine-succinyl concanavalin A (ConA) and tetramethyl rhodamine-anti human β2 microglobulin antibodies on the cell surface were measured by fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FPR). Diffusion coefficients of receptors for ConA and for antibodies to β2 microglobulin (presumably histocompatibility antigens) were increased 2- to 3-fold by exposure to the ultraviolet inactivated virus at virus doses from 250 to 2 500 HAU/ml, regardless of whether the particular cells measured had been fused. No mobility enhancement was induced with trypsinized Sendai virus, nor by influenza virus, indicating a probable requirement for the Sendai virus F protein. Virus treatment reduced the diffusion coefficient of a lipid analog in 3T3 cells. The results are compatible with the hypothesis that the Sendai virus disrupts a mobility restraint system, perhaps cytoskeleton-membrane connections.  相似文献

G-banded metaphase preparations of cultured fibroblasts were used to construct the karyotypes of Petrogale brachyotis (2n = 18) and P. concinna (2n = 16). The two karyotypes differ significantly from the plesiomorphic karyotype of the genus and from those of all other Petrogale species examined. Petrogale brachyotis and P. concinna are characterised by three synapomorphies: a 1-10 centric fusion, a 3a-6 centric fusion, and a submetacentric chromosome 2 (2s). Both species also possess autapomorphies. Petrogale brachyotis is characterised by submetacentric chromosomes 5 (5s) and 4 (4sm), whereas P. concinna is characterised by a 5-9 centric fusion and a submetacentric chromosome 8 (8m). The 2s, 5s, 4sm, and 8m chromosomes all appear to be derived from their plesiomorphic homologs by centromeric transpositions. Although the rate of chromosome evolution varies considerably in Petrogale, the genus clearly exhibits karyotypic orthoselection, with all the autosomal rearrangements identified being either centric fusions or centromeric transpositions. This study also illustrates the potential for convergent evolution in chromosomally diverse groups and demonstrates the importance of G-banding studies for accurate identification of chromosome rearrangements.  相似文献

Excessive airway mucus can alter both the mass and site of aerosol deposition, which, in turn, may affect airway responsiveness to inhaled materials. In six prone sheep, we therefore measured pulmonary airflow resistance (RL) and cumulative aerosol deposition during five standard breaths (AD5) at base line and 3 min after inhalation challenge with 2% carbachol in buffered saline (10 breaths, tidal volume = 500 ml) or after an intravenous loading dose of carbachol (3 micrograms/kg) followed by a constant infusion of 0.3 micrograms.kg-1.min-1 with and without instillation of 20 ml of a mucus simulant (MS) into the distal end of each of the main bronchi or 30 ml of MS into the right main bronchus only by means of a flexible fiber-optic bronchoscope. Before carbachol challenge, RL did not change with MS into either both lungs or one lung only. AD5 increased from 36 +/- 2% (SE) before to 42 +/- 2% after MS instillation into both lungs (P less than 0.05) but remained unchanged after MS into one lung. After carbachol inhalation, RL increased significantly by 154 +/- 20 before and 126 +/- 25% after MS into both lungs and 162 +/- 24 before and 178 +/- 31% after MS into one lung (P less than 0.05). When the percent increase in RL was normalized for total aerosol deposition (% delta RL/AD5), the normalized values were lower after MS (3.0 +/- 0.5) than before MS (4.4 +/- 0.3) into both lungs (P less than 0.05) but were not significantly different before and after MS into the right lung only.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
