A female, horse-like foal was apparently born to a mare mule from mating to a Shetland stallion. The presence of three pregnant Shetland mares in the same pasture, however, raised some questions about parentage, even though all three mares apparently gave birth to single foals within 6 weeks after the birth of the propositus. The transferrin system indicated that the foal was not born to the mare mule but was the offspring of one of the Shetland mares. Apparently one Shetland mare gave birth to twins 3 to 6 weeks apart, and the mare mule came into lactation spontaneously and adopted the first twin. The offspring was determined to be a horse by appearance, karyotype, blood type, and voice.  相似文献

Aerosol deposition in the airways with excessive mucus secretions was investigated utilizing an in vitro airway model lined with various mucus simulants of differing rheological properties. The airway model was made with a straight glass tube (1.0 cm ID and 20 cm in length) and positioned vertically. The mucus simulants were supplied into the tube at a constant rate and made to move upward through the tube as a thin layer (0.6-1.7 mm) undergoing a random wave motion by means of upward airflow. Aerosols (3.0 and 5.0-micron diam) were passed through the mucus-lined tube at flow rates of 0.33-1.17 l/s, and the deposition of the aerosols in the tube was determined by sampling the aerosols at the inlet and the outlet of the tube on filters. During the sampling, pressure drop across the tube model was also measured. Deposition efficiency in the 20-cm-long mucus-lined tube ranged from 13 to 92% with 3.0-micron-diam particles and from 66 to 98% with 5.0-micron-diam particles. This deposition was 25-300 times higher than that in the dry tube. The deposition was higher with increasing viscosity of mucus but was lower with increasing elasticity of mucus. Pressure drop across the mucus-lined tube was much higher than that in the dry tube, and the increase was more prominent with mucous layers with higher viscosity but lower elasticity values. Therefore, aerosol deposition showed a good positive relationship with pressure drop. However, percent increase of aerosol deposition in the mucus-lined tube was 2-5 times higher than that of pressure drop.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A method of calculating the size of membrane pores lacking strong ionic selectivity is presented. By treating the flow of ions through a small channel as a hydrodynamic phenomenon, the electrical conductance becomes a function of the ratio of ion radius to channel radius. Thus when both the channel conductance and the ion size are known, the radius of the channel may be estimated. The method gives good agreement among radii predicted from conductances of four different alkali cations in alamethicin pores.  相似文献

Mean arterial pressure, cardiac output and heart rate were determined in eight male New Zealand white rabbits while conscious and after being anesthetized with halothane plus nitrous oxide for 15 minutes. Delivery of the anesthetic agent was stopped and the measurement repeated at 15, 30, 60 and 210 minutes. In a separate experiment blood samples were obtained for plasma renin activity in six rabbits before anesthesia, after 15 minutes of halothane plus nitrous oxide administration, and again 210 minutes after cessation of the anesthesia. Later, this experiment was repeated with the same rabbits except that they were allowed to breathe room air instead of the anesthesia. The halothane anesthesia resulted in decreased mean arterial pressure and cardiac output, but these returned to the preanesthetic levels by 15 minutes after stopping the anesthesia. Heart rate increased during halothane administration, and although it tended to return toward control levels after cessation of the halothane, heart rate was still elevated 210 minutes later. Halothane plus nitrous oxide produced an increase in plasma renin activity, which then subsided to normal by 210 minutes following anesthesia; breathing room air did not result in increases in plasma renin activity. These studies revealed that although short-term anesthesia with halothane plus nitrous oxide resulted in cardiovascular changes in rabbits, after cessation of the anesthetic agent the cardiovascular system quickly returned to normal.  相似文献

American bison (Bison bison) and domestic cattle (Bos taurus and Bos indicus) evolved from a common ancestor 1–1.4 million years ago. Nevertheless, they show dramatic differences in their susceptibility to infectious diseases, including malignant catarrhal fever (MCF). Although bison are highly susceptible to ovine herpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2) associated MCF, about 20% of healthy domesticated and wild bison are positive for OvHV-2 antibody. We are interested in testing the hypothesis that, within the bison population, the polymorphism of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II genes influences resistance to MCF. However, since little was known about the MHC class II genes of bison, it was necessary to first characterize class II haplotypes present in Bi. bison (Bibi). Thus, the MHC class II haplotypes carried by 14 bison were characterized by the PCR-based cloning and sequencing of their DRB3, DQA, and DQB alleles. Twelve MHC class II haplotypes were identified in the 14 bison. These haplotypes comprised six previously reported and six new Bibi-DRB3 alleles, along with 11 Bibi-DQA and 10 Bibi-DQB alleles. For each bison class II allele, it was possible to identify closely related cattle sequences. The closest bison and bovine DQA, DQB, and DRB3 alleles, on average, differed by only 1.3, 3.5, and 5.8 amino acids, respectively. Furthermore, bison MHC haplotypes with both nonduplicated and duplicated DQ genes were identified; these haplotypes appear to have originated from the same ancestral haplotypes as orthologous cattle haplotypes. Two 2,7'-cyclolignans, ocholignans A and B, were obtained as mass-limited samples from Scyphocephalium ochocoa via high-throughput natural products chemistry methods. The rapid structure elucidation of each compound was primarily facilitated by NMR data acquisition using a capillary-scale NMR probe, CapNMR probe. Ocholignan A was found to possess significant in vitro antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 33591 and S. aureus 78-13607A with a MIC of 16 microg/mL, respectively.  相似文献

Lanchester's models of attrition describe casualty rates during battles between groups as functions of the numbers of individuals and their fighting abilities. Originally developed to describe human warfare, Lanchester's square law has been hypothesized to apply broadly to social animals as well, with important consequences for their aggressive behaviour and social structure. According to the square law, the fighting ability of a group is proportional to the square of the number of individuals, but rises only linearly with fighting ability of individuals within the group. By analyzing mortality rates of fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) fighting in different numerical ratios, we provide the first quantitative test of Lanchester's model for a non-human animal. Casualty rates of fire ants were not consistent with the square law; instead, group fighting ability was an approximately linear function of group size. This implies that the relative numbers of casualties incurred by two fighting groups are not strongly affected by relative group sizes and that battles do not disproportionately favour group size over individual prowess.  相似文献

Questions

How do changes in grazing intensity by different herbivores and differences in forest structure affect the assembly of ecological clusters within plant ecological networks in dryland plant communities?

Location

Eastern Australia across an area of 0.4 million km2.

Methods

We used correlation network analysis and structural equation modelling to examine how changes in grazing intensity, by different herbivores, and differences in forest structure (tree canopy cover, basal area and density) and soil fertility influenced the assembly of ecological clusters of plant communities (i.e. relative abundance of ecological clusters formed by co‐occurring plant species within an ecological network) in three forested communities from eastern Australia.

Results

Livestock grazing and forest structure regulated the relative abundance of ecological clusters within plant networks, but their effects on these plant assemblies were highly dependent on the ecological cluster and forest community type, with no single winner or loser across forest types, conditions or grazing intensities. Thus, the relative abundance of some ecological clusters increased under grazing while others declined, a response that was maintained across different forest structures. The relative importance of grazing, forest structure and soil fertility varied across forest community type. The two eucalypt communities exhibited mixed effects of grazing and forest structure (Eucalyptus largiflorens ) or forest structure only (Eucalyptus camaldulensis ). In the third (Callitris glaucophylla ) community, grazing played a larger role in controlling the plant community assembly. Soil fertility (soil C and P) effects were of a similar magnitude to grazing and forest structure, but the effects differed among clusters.

Conclusions

Livestock grazing and forest structure regulated the relative abundance of ecological clusters within networks of plant communities in forests in eastern Australia. Our study uses a novel approach of ecological clusters to show that differences in grazing and forest structure will always disadvantage some plant ecological clusters. Furthermore, changes in one cluster will ultimately affect other clusters. Any changes in management therefore will have varied effects on different ecological plant clusters.

Six female rhesus macaques were immunized orally and intranasally at 0 weeks and intratracheally at 12 weeks with an adenovirus type 5 host range mutant (Ad5hr)-simian immunodeficiency virus SIVsm env recombinant and at 24 and 36 weeks with native SIVmac251 gp120 in Syntex adjuvant. Four macaques received the Ad5hr vector and adjuvant alone; two additional controls were naive. In vivo replication of the Ad5hr wild-type and recombinant vectors occurred with detection of Ad5 DNA in stool samples and/or nasal secretions in all macaques and increases in Ad5 neutralizing antibody in 9 of 10 macaques following Ad administrations. SIV-specific neutralizing antibodies appeared after the second recombinant immunization and rose to titers > 10,000 following the second subunit boost. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgA antibodies able to bind gp120 developed in nasal and rectal secretions, and SIV-specific IgGs were also observed in vaginal secretions and saliva. T-cell proliferative responses to SIV gp140 and T-helper epitopes were sporadically detected in all immunized macaques. Following vaginal challenge with SIVmac251, transient or persistent infection resulted in both immunized and control monkeys. The mean viral burden in persistently infected immunized macaques was significantly decreased in the primary infection period compared to that of control macaques. These results establish in vivo use of the Ad5hr vector, which overcomes the host range restriction of human Ads for rhesus macaques, thereby providing a new model for evaluation of Ad-based vaccines. In addition, they show that a vaccine regimen using the Ad5hr-SIV env recombinant and gp120 subunit induces strong humoral, cellular, and mucosal immunity in rhesus macaques. The reduced viral burden achieved solely with an env-based vaccine supports further development of Ad-based vaccines comprising additional viral components for immune therapy and AIDS vaccine development.  相似文献

Glycoprotein E (gE) gene of pseudorabies virus (PRV) is conserved among diverse alphaherpesviruses and therefore is predicted to be important for virus survival. gE contributes to viral spread from cell to cell in a variety of hosts and is responsible, in part, for increased virulence or pathogenesis of the virus. Virulence and spread mediated by gE are thought to be highly correlated. We initiated this study to explore the hypothesis that these two phenotypes might reflect separate functions of the gE protein. We did so by focusing on the role of the gE carboxy terminus in neuronal spread. Viruses harboring nonsense mutations affecting the expression of the gE cytoplasmic domain had several notable phenotypes. First, the truncated gE proteins expressed from these mutants are not found in virion envelopes. Second, the mutants retain the ability to spread to all retinorecipient regions of the rodent brain after retinal infection of rats. Third, the mutants have the reduced virulence phenotype of a gE deletion mutant in rats. Finally, the mutants have distinct plaque-size phenotypes on MDBK cells but not PK15 cells. Based on these observations, we suggest that gE-mediated virulence and spread may reflect separate functions that are not mediated by gE on virus particles.  相似文献
