Energy diagrams, changes of geometry and bond orders were calculated semi-empirically for the thermolysis of 1,2-dioxetane. Stretching of the O–O bond, then of the C–C bond and distortion of the whole quadrangular structure make major, but different, contributions to the reaction coordinate on the path to formaldehyde. The activation barrier represents a vast region where the gaps between the ground and excited states are small, and this favours horizontal radiationless transitions leading to the excitation of a product. The results show that semi-empirical calculations may help to provide better insight into the nature and mechanism of the chemiluminescence excitation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

The influence of female and male cues on the male searching behavior of the sheep tick, Ixodes ricinus (Acari: Ixodidae), was studied under constant laboratory conditions by means of a computerized video tracking system. Males
were released into an open glass arena in which one half had been exposed for 1 h to 5 freely walking unfed females or five
males. The obtained track data were analyzed to reveal if male walking pattern was random or affected by cues of conspecifics
left on the arena surface. The results showed that males spent significantly more time and walked a significantly longer distance
in the area with female cues compared to the control area. Moreover, the walking path of males was more tortuous on the cues
half than the control half. In contrast, walking behavior of males was not affected by male cues in any observed parameter.
These results provide the first evidence that unfed females leave sex-specific semiochemicals on a substrate during their
walk and that these cues have an effect on male searching behavior. Since this effect was not observed when female cues were
24-h old, the semiochemicals seem to either evaporate or are subject to degradation. The biological significance of these
findings for mate-searching in I. ricinus males is discussed. 相似文献

Euglena gracilis is a fresh‐water flagellate possessing secondary chloroplasts of green algal origin. In contrast with organisms possessing primary plastids, mRNA levels of nucleus‐encoded genes for chloroplast proteins in E. gracilis depend on neither light nor plastid function. However, it remains unknown, if all these mRNAs are trans‐spliced and possess spliced leader sequence at the 5′‐end and if trans‐splicing depends on light or functional plastids. This study revealed that polyadenylated mRNAs encoding the chloroplast proteins glyceraldehyde‐3‐phosphate dehydrogenase (GapA), cytochrome f (PetA), and subunit O of photosystem II (PsbO) are trans‐spliced irrespective of light or plastid function. 相似文献

Abstract. Walking activity of 3-day-old adult female Gryllus bimaculatus (de Geer) (Ensifera, Gryllidae) was measured over 24 h. A high level of locomotor activity during the scotophase was found, which was two- to three-fold higher than that during the photophase. The titre of lipid in the haemolymph was relatively low 2 h after lights on, increased significantly 2 h after lights off, although, 2 h after lights on in the next photophase, the lipid titre had decreased to the basal level. Topical application of homologous Grybi-adipokinetic hormone (AKH) (100 pmol in 20% 2-propanol) led to a significant increase in haemolymph lipids, comparable with the maximal increase caused by injection of AKH (3 pmol in water). Topical application of AKH also stimulated locomotor activity in crickets (maximal stimulation 1.8-fold with 100 pmol Grybi-AKH). The results suggest that AKH penetrates the cuticle quickly. It is assumed that AKH stimulates locomotory activity at least in part via the increase of haemolymph lipid titres; however, the stimulation of locomotor activity via a direct neuromodulatory effect of AKH cannot be excluded. 相似文献

To determine the metabolic effects of grapefruit juice consumption we established a model in which C57Bl/6 mice drank 25–50% sweetened GFJ, clarified of larger insoluble particles by centrifugation (cGFJ), ad libitum as their sole source of liquid or isocaloric and sweetened water. cGFJ and control groups consumed similar amounts of liquids and calories. Mice fed a high-fat diet and cGFJ experienced a 18.4% decrease in weight, a 13–17% decrease in fasting blood glucose, a three-fold decrease in fasting serum insulin, and a 38% decrease in liver triacylglycerol values, compared to controls. Mice fed a low-fat diet that drank cGFJ experienced a two-fold decrease in fasting insulin, but not the other outcomes observed with the high-fat diet. cGFJ consumption decreased blood glucose to a similar extent as the commonly used anti-diabetic drug metformin. Introduction of cGFJ after onset of diet-induced obesity also reduced weight and blood glucose. A bioactive compound in cGFJ, naringin, reduced blood glucose and improved insulin tolerance, but did not ameliorate weight gain. These data from a well-controlled animal study indicate that GFJ contains more than one health-promoting neutraceutical, and warrant further studies of GFJ effects in the context of obesity and/or the western diet. 相似文献

Introduction
HIV-positive women have an increased risk of invasive cervical cancer but cytologic screening is effective in reducing incidence. Little is known about cervical screening coverage or the prevalence of abnormal cytology among HIV-positive women in Ukraine, which has the most severe HIV epidemic in Europe.Methods
Poisson regression models were fitted to data from 1120 women enrolled at three sites of the Ukraine Cohort Study of HIV-infected Childbearing Women to investigate factors associated with receiving cervical screening as part of HIV care. All women had been diagnosed as HIV-positive before or during their most recent pregnancy. Prevalence of cervical abnormalities (high/low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions) among women who had been screened was estimated, and associated factors explored.Results
Overall, 30% (337/1120) of women had received a cervical screening test as part of HIV care at study enrolment (median 10 months postpartum), a third (115/334) of whom had been tested >12 months previously. In adjusted analyses, women diagnosed as HIV-positive during (vs before) their most recent pregnancy were significantly less likely to have a screening test reported, on adjusting for other potential risk factors (adjusted prevalence ratio (APR) 0.62, 95% CI 0.51–0.75 p<0.01 for 1st/2nd trimester diagnosis and APR 0.42, 95% CI 0.28–0.63 p<0.01 for 3rd trimester/intrapartum diagnosis). Among those with a cervical screening result reported at any time (including follow-up), 21% (68/325) had a finding of cervical abnormality. In adjusted analyses, Herpes simplex virus 2 seropositivity and a recent diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis were associated with an increased risk of abnormal cervical cytology (APR 1.83 95% CI 1.07–3.11 and APR 3.49 95% CI 2.11–5.76 respectively).Conclusions
In this high risk population, cervical screening coverage as part of HIV care was low and could be improved by an organised cervical screening programme for HIV-positive women. Bacterial vaginosis testing and treatment may reduce vulnerability to cervical abnormalities. 相似文献30.

Silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) obtained by mechanical grinding of porous silicon have been used for visualization of living cells in vitro. It was found that SiNPs could penetrate into the cells without any cytotoxic effect up to the concentration of 100 μg/ml. The cell cytoplasm was observed to be filled by SiNPs, which exhibited bright photoluminescence at 1.6 eV. SiNPs could also act as photosensitizers of the singlet oxygen generation, which could be used in the photodynamic therapy of cancer.
