Nutrient-rich water bodies are usually expected to host low species richness at the local scale (water body). Nevertheless, they can support a diverse and sometimes unique biodiversity when diversity is considered at a regional scale. This discrepancy between the two scales is well documented for natural water bodies, but little is known about biodiversity of artificial water bodies, like fish ponds. We hypothesise that nutrient-rich water bodies can collectively host high species richness at the regional scale. Thus, these are important ecosystems for the regional conservation of biodiversity. We investigated 84 fish ponds in the Dombes region, France, with five taxonomic groups: macrophytes, phytoplankton, macroinvertebrates, dragonflies, and amphibians. Species richness patterns were determined for α- (single pond), β- (between ponds), and γ- (regional pond network) levels. For most studied species groups, richness per fish pond and at the regional level proved to be relatively high in comparison with natural ponds in other landscapes. Contribution of α-diversity to regional diversity was highest for dragonflies with 41 %, and lowest for amphibians and macrophytes with 16 and 18 %, respectively. For macroinvertebrate families and phytoplankton genera it was intermediate. Contribution of β-diversity to regional diversity was similar for all species groups with 22–25 %. Furthermore, some ponds hosted a large number of less frequent species and some endangered species, indicating that the conservation of biodiversity of fish ponds must be established at a regional scale. 相似文献

Drosophila cells were treated in vitro with N-phosphonacetyl-L-aspartate (PALA) which is a specific inhibitor of aspartate transcarbamylase, the second enzyme of the pyrimidine biosynthetic pathway. By stepwise selection using increasing amounts of this inhibitor, PALA-resistant (PALAr) stable clones have been isolated. Enzymatic activities of aspartate transcarbamylase, carbamyl phosphate synthetase and dihydro-orotase, borne by the same multifunctional protein, CAD, are increased 6-12-fold in these resistant clones compared with parental cells. The aspartate transcarbamylase in PALAr cells is shown by physical, kinetic and immunological criteria to be normal. The data from immunotitration and immunoblotting experiments indicate that the increased enzyme activities result from the overproduction of CAD. 相似文献

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and pericyte progenitors (PPs) are both perivascular cells with similar multipotential properties regardless of tissue of origin. We compared the phenotype and function of the 2 cell types derived from the same bone-marrow samples but expanded in their respective media – pericyte conditions (endothelial cell growth medium 2 [EGM-2]) for PPs and standard medium (mesenchymal stem cell medium [MSM]) for MSCs. After 3 weeks of culture, whatever the expansion medium, all cells showed similar characteristics (MSC markers and adipo-osteo-chondroblastic differentiation potential), although neuronal potential was greater in EGM-2– than MSM-cultured cells. As compared with MSM-cultured MSCs, EGM-2–cultured PPs showed higher expression of the pericyte-specific antigen 3G5 than α-smooth muscle actin. In addition, EGM-2–cultured PPs showed an immature phenotype, with upregulation of stemness OCT4 and SOX2 proteins and downregulation of markers of osteoblastic, chondroblastic, adipocytic and vascular smooth muscle lineages. Despite having less effective in vitro immunosuppression capacities than standard MSCs, EGM-2–cultured PPs had higher engraftment potentials when combined with biomaterials heterotopically-transplanted in Nude mice. Furthermore, these engrafted cells generated more collagen matrix and were preferentially perivascular or lined trabeculae as compared with MSM-cultured MSCs. In conclusion, EGM-2–cultured PPs are highly immature cells with increased plasticity and engraftment potential. 相似文献

MOTIVATION: We suggest the use of Poisson regression for time inference and hypothesis testing on a bifurcating Phylogenetic tree with known topology. This method is computationally simple and naturally accommodates variable substitution rates across different sites, without requiring the estimation of these rates. We identify the assumptions under which this is a maximum-likelihood inference approach and show that in some realistic situations--in particular, when the probability of repeated mutation within each branch of the tree is small--these assumptions hold with high probability. RESULTS: Our motivating domain is human mitochondrial DNA trees, and we illustrate our method on a problem of estimating the time to most recent common ancestor of all non-African mtDNA, using publicly available data. We test for molecular clock violations using multiple comparisons, and conclude that the global molecular clock hypothesis cannot be rejected based on these data. 相似文献

The direct enantiomeric resolution of albendazole sulfoxide (SOABZ), an anthelmintic drug belonging to the benzimidazole class, is reported on a chiral stationary phase (CSP) synthesized by covalent binding of (S)-N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)tyrosine-O-(2-propen-1-yl) methyl ester on a gamma-mercaptopropyl-silanized silica gel. A comparison with the resolution achieved on commercially available Pirkle-type CSPs obtained from N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl) derivatives of (R)-phenyglycine or (S)-phenylalanine is described. Some structurally related chiral sulfoxides including oxfendazole (SOFBZ) are also studied. Optimization of the mobile phase nature and composition is investigated showing that a hexane-dioxane-ethanol ternary mixture affords an almost baseline resolution (Rs = 1.25); however, in this case, albendazole sulfone (SO2ABZ) is eluted between the two sulfoxide enantiomers; accordingly, a hexane-ethanol mobile phase would be preferred for biological samples containing both metabolites. The influence of temperature on the resolution is depicted with a hexane-ethanol mobile phase. Finally, application to the enantiomeric assays of SOABZ in plasmatic extracts of rat, sheep, bovin, and man after oral administration of albendazole (sulfoxidized to SOABZ and SO2ABZ) is reported.
