The frequency of natural hazards has been increasing in the last decades in Europe and specifically in Mediterranean regions due to climate change. For example heavy precipitation events can lead to disasters through the interaction with exposed and vulnerable people and natural systems. It is therefore necessary a prevention planning to preserve human health and to reduce economic losses. Prevention should mainly be carried out with more adequate land management, also supported by the development of an appropriate risk prediction tool based on weather forecasts. The main aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between weather types (WTs) and the frequency of floods and landslides that have caused damage to properties, personal injuries, or deaths in the Italian regions over recent decades. In particular, a specific risk index (WT-FLARI) for each WT was developed at national and regional scale. This study has identified a specific risk index associated with each weather type, calibrated for each Italian region and applicable to both annual and seasonal levels. The risk index represents the seasonal and annual vulnerability of each Italian region and indicates that additional preventive actions are necessary for some regions. The results of this study represent a good starting point towards the development of a tool to support policy-makers, local authorities and health agencies in planning actions, mainly in the medium to long term, aimed at the weather damage reduction that represents an important issue of the World Meteorological Organization mission.  相似文献

In a previous paper we demonstrated that, in Paracentrotus lividus embryos, deciliation represents a specific kind of stress that induces an increase in the levels of an acidic protein of about 40 kD (p40). Here we report that deciliation also induces an increase in Hsp40 chaperone levels and enhancement of its ectodermal localization. We suggest that Hsp40 might play a chaperoning role in cilia regeneration.  相似文献

The nervous system is a crucial component of the body and damages to this system, either by of injury or disease, can result in serious or potentially lethal consequences. Restoring the damaged nervous system is a great challenge due to the complex physiology system and limited regenerative capacity.Polymers, either synthetic or natural in origin, have been extensively evaluated as a solution for restoring functions in damaged neural tissues. Polymers offer a wide range of versatility, in particular regarding shape and mechanical characteristics, and their biocompatibility is unmatched by other biomaterials, such as metals and ceramics. Several studies have shown that polymers can be shaped into suitable support structures, including nerve conduits, scaffolds, and electrospun matrices, capable of improving the regeneration of damaged neural tissues. In general, natural polymers offer the advantage of better biocompatibility and bioactivity, while synthetic or non-natural polymers have better mechanical properties and structural stability. Often, combinations of the two allow for the development of polymeric conduits able to mimic the native physiological environment of healthy neural tissues and, consequently, regulate cell behaviour and support the regeneration of injured nervous tissues.Currently, most of neural tissue engineering applications are in pre-clinical study, in particular for use in the central nervous system, however collagen polymer conduits aimed at regeneration of peripheral nerves have already been successfully tested in clinical trials.This review highlights different types of natural and synthetic polymers used in neural tissue engineering and their advantages and disadvantages for neural regeneration.  相似文献

The article analyses the main chemical signals used by anurans and urodeles for social interactions such as defence and reproduction. Some emblematic examples have been selected from the most significative reports. The antipredatory arsenal of many frogs and toads includes secretions of cutaneous glands, randomly distributed on the body or localised in “critical” skin regions. These substances act as repellent, alarm or venom, with specific toxicity and pharmacological actions. Other chemical cues facilitate social interactions. These “pheromones” allow animals to recognize conspecifics and to identify their sex, reproductive condition and social status. In many cases courtship pheromones play a crucial role in increasing male success. Evidence such as that suggests that selective pressures from environmental and social constraints produced the high incidence of chemical signalling typical of the amphibia, a view confirmed by the similarity of chemical cues across different taxa.  相似文献

In previous reports, we have shown that interleukin 1 (IL1), a cytokine associated with implantation in mice, is also expressed in reproductive tissues of viviparous squamate reptiles and cartilaginous fishes. In the present study, we investigated the expression of IL1B and its functional membrane receptor type I (IL1R1) in amphibians, a class of vertebrates that is characterized by different reproductive modes, including internal and external fertilization. In particular, we investigated the oviductal tissues of the aplacental viviparous Salamandra lanzai, the oviparous Triturus carnifex, and the ovuliparous Bufo bufo. In immunohistochemistry with anti-human IL1B and IL1R1 polyclonal antibodies we found that in S. lanzai, most cells in the uterine mucosa were immunoreactive for IL1B and IL1R1. In T. carnifex, IL1B and IL1R1 were present in ciliated luminal cells, and there was evidence of IL1B in glandular cells. In B. bufo, the expression of IL1B and IL1R1 was limited to the apical cytoplasm of the ciliated oviductal cells. Western blot analysis showed that a putative mature form of IL1B, similar to that seen in mammals, was present in the oviductal tissues of S. lanzai, whereas different forms, which probably correspond to an inactive pro-IL1B protein, were found in T. carnifex and B. bufo. A band that corresponded to the predicted 80-kDa human IL1R1 was found in S. lanzai and T. carnifex. Although the present study shows that IL1B and IL1R1 expression occurs in all reproductive modes, the differential expression patterns noted between ovuliparity and oviparity and viviparity may reflect the different roles of IL1 in the various reproductive modes.  相似文献

Recent evidence suggested a role for the cell cycle dependent kinases cdc2 and cdk2 in apoptosis. An important mechanism by which many cell types could undergo apoptosis is through the activation of the Fas molecule on the cell membrane. To investigate whether Fas-induced cell death activated cdc2 and cdk2 kinases inappropriately, the human T lymphoma cells HUT-78, which express a high copy number of Fas, and two other previously characterized subclones of the same cell line which express mutant, cell death-deficient dominant-negative forms of Fas, were Fas-challenged and the changes in cdc2 and cdk2 kinase activity monitored. In both wild-type and Fas-mutated HUT-78 cells, apoptosis was associated simultaneously with decreased cdc2 and increased cdk2 activity. The phytoplankton succession in Lake Orta, heavy metals and ammonium polluted for decades and subjected to liming intervention in 1989–90, was studied during 1994. The existence of three main succession stages, with different structures of the community emerged. Chlorophyta are the most important taxonomic group in every season. The spring community was dominated by chlorophytes, Dinobryon sertularia and Kephyrion sp., the summer by Synedra sp. and Westella botryoides, the autumn by Rhizosolenia eriensis and W. botryoides, the winter by Synedra sp., R. eriensis and Synechococcus sp. The abundance of Chlorophyta, less important in other deep subalpine lakes, and the dominance of taxa able to thrive in polluted environments, could be related to the presence of trace metals in the sediments.  相似文献
