Although rarely considered predators, wildlife hunters can function as important ecological and evolutionary agents. In part, their influence relates to targeting of large reproductive adults within prey populations. Despite known impacts of size-selective harvests, however, we know little about what enables hunters to kill these older, rarer, and presumably more wary individuals. In other mammalian predators, predatory performance varies with knowledge and physical condition, which accumulates and declines, respectively, with age. Moreover, some species evolved camouflage as a physical trait to aid in predatory performance. In this work, we tested whether knowledge-based faculty (use of a hunting guide with accumulated experience in specific areas), physical traits (relative body mass [RBM] and camouflage clothing), and age can predict predatory performance. We measured performance as do many hunters: size of killed cervid prey, using the number of antler tines as a proxy. Examining ∼4300 online photographs of hunters posing with carcasses, we found that only the presence of guides increased the odds of killing larger prey. Accounting for this effect, modest evidence suggested that unguided hunters presumably handicapped with the highest RBM actually had greater odds of killing large prey. There was no association with hunter age, perhaps because of our coarse measure (presence of grey hair) and the performance trade-offs between knowledge accumulation and physical deterioration with age. Despite its prevalence among sampled hunters (80%), camouflage had no influence on size of killed prey. Should these patterns be representative of other areas and prey, and our interpretations correct, evolutionarily-enlightened harvest management might benefit from regulatory scrutiny on guided hunting. More broadly, we suggest that by being nutritionally and demographically de-coupled from prey and aided by efficient killing technology and road access, wildlife hunters in the developed world might have overcome many of the physical, but not knowledge-based, challenges of hunting.  相似文献

Photon absorption by one of the roughly 200 chlorophylls of the plant Photosystem II (PSII) results in formation of an equilibrated excited state (Chl200*) and is followed by chlorophyll oxidation (formation of P680+) coupled to reduction of a specific pheophytin (Phe), then electron transfer from Phe- to a firmly bound quinone (QA), and subsequently reduction of P680+ by a redox-active tyrosine residue denoted as Z. The involved free-energy differences (DeltaG) and redox potentials are of prime interest. Oxygen-evolving PSII membrane particles of spinach were studied at 5 degrees C. By analyzing the delayed and prompt Chl fluorescence, we determined the equilibrium constant and thus free-energy difference between Chl200* and the [Z+,QA-] radical pair to be -0.43+/-0.025 eV, at 10 mus after the photon absorption event for PSII in its S(3)-state. On basis of this value and previously published results, the free-energy difference between P680* and [P680+,QA-] is calculated to be -0.50+/-0.04 eV; the free-energy loss associated with electron transfer from Phe to QA is found to be 0.34+/-0.04 eV. The given uncertainty ranges do not represent a standard deviation or likely error, but an estimate of the maximal error. Assuming a QA-/QA redox potential of -0.08 V, the following redox-potential estimates are obtained: +1.25 V for P680/P680+; +1.21 V for Z/Z+ (at 10 mus); -0.42 V for Phe-/Phe; -0.58 V for P680*/P680+.  相似文献

Although stem cells succumbing to reproductive death are assumed to be the single relevant targets in radiation tissue damage, recent studies showed intestinal stem cell damage is conditionally linked to crypt endothelial apoptosis, defining a two-target model. Here we report that when mouse intestines were protected against microvascular apoptosis, radiation switched as the dose escalated to a previously unrecognized crypt stem cell target, activating ceramide synthase-mediated apoptosis to initiate intestinal damage. Whereas ataxia telangiectasia-mutated (ATM) kinase normally represses ceramide synthase, its derepression in Atm(-/-) mice increased crypt stem cell radiosensitivity 3.7-fold without sensitizing the microvascular response. Discovery of this intestinal radiosensitivity mechanism allowed design of an antisense Atm oligonucleotide treatment which phenocopied the Atm(-/-) mouse, reordering ceramide synthase-mediated stem cell death to become the first-line gastrointestinal response of wild-type littermates. These experiments indicate that tissues operate multiple potential targets activated consecutively according to their inherent radiosensitivities that may be reordered therapeutically to control radiation tissue responses.  相似文献

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infects numerous wild and domestic feline species and is closely related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). Species-specific strains of FIV have been described for domestic cat (Felis catus), puma (Puma concolor), lion (Panthera leo), leopard (Panthera pardus), and Pallas' cat (Otocolobus manul). Here, we employ a three-antigen Western blot screening (domestic cat, puma, and lion FIV antigens) and PCR analysis to survey worldwide prevalence, distribution, and genomic differentiation of FIV based on 3,055 specimens from 35 Felidae and 3 Hyaenidae species. Although FIV infects a wide variety of host species, it is confirmed to be endemic in free-ranging populations of nine Felidae and one Hyaenidae species. These include the large African carnivores (lion, leopard, cheetah, and spotted hyena), where FIV is widely distributed in multiple populations; most of the South American felids (puma, jaguar, ocelot, margay, Geoffroy's cat, and tigrina), which maintain a lower FIV-positive level throughout their range; and two Asian species, the Pallas' cat, which has a species-specific strain of FIV, and the leopard cat, which has a domestic cat FIV strain in one population. Phylogenetic analysis of FIV proviral sequence demonstrates that most species for which FIV is endemic harbor monophyletic, genetically distinct species-specific FIV strains, suggesting that FIV transfer between cat species has occurred in the past but is quite infrequent today.  相似文献

Cyclooxygenases (COXs) are key enzymes in the conversion of arachidonic acid into prostanoids which are involved in apoptosis and inflammation. Two distinct COXs have been identified: COX-1 which is constitutively expressed and COX-2 which is induced by different products such as tumor promoters or growth factors. Previously, we demonstrated that a plant steroid, diosgenin, was a new megakaryocytic differentiation inducer of human erythroleukemia cells. In our study, we investigated the effect of diosgenin on the proliferation rate, cell cycle distribution and apoptosis in the human osteosarcoma 1547 cell line. The effects of this compound were also tested on COX expression and COX activities. Diosgenin treatment caused an inhibition of 1547 cell growth with a cycle arrest in G1 phase and apoptosis induction. Moreover, we found a correlation between p53, p21 mRNA expression and nuclear factor-kappaB activation and we observed a time-dependent increase in PGE2 synthesis after diosgenin treatment.  相似文献

The pharyngeal airway can be considered as an airway luminal shape formed by surrounding tissues, contained within a bony enclosure formed by the mandible, skull base, and cervical vertebrae. Mandibular advancement (MA), a therapy for obstructive sleep apnea, is thought to increase the size of this bony enclosure and to decrease the pressure in the upper airway extraluminal tissue space (ETP). We examined the effect of MA on upper airway airflow resistance (Rua) and ETP in a rabbit model. We studied 11 male, supine, anesthetized, spontaneously breathing New Zealand White rabbits in which ETP was measured via pressure transducer-tipped catheters inserted into the tissues surrounding the lateral (ETPlat) and anterior (ETPant) pharyngeal wall. Airflow, measured via surgically inserted pneumotachograph in series with the trachea, and tracheal pressure were recorded while graded MA at 75 degrees and 100 degrees to the horizontal was performed using an external traction device. Data were analyzed using a linear mixed-effects statistical model. We found that MA at 100 degrees increased mouth opening from 4.7 +/- 0.4 to 6.6 +/- 0.4 (SE) mm (n = 7; P < 0.004), whereas mouth opening did not change from baseline (4.0 +/- 0.2 mm) with MA at 75 degrees . MA at both 75 degrees and 100 degrees decreased mean ETPlat and ETPant by approximately 0.1 cmH2O/mm MA (n = 7-11; all P < 0.0005). However, the fall in Rua (measured at 20 ml/s) with MA was greater for MA at 75 degrees (approximately 0.03 mmH2O.ml(-1).s.mm(-1)) than at 100 degrees (approximately 0.01 mmH2O.ml(-1).s.mm(-1); P < 0.02). From these findings, we conclude that MA decreases ETP and is more effective in reducing Rua without mouth opening.  相似文献

Lagarosiphon major (Ridl.) Moss ex Wager (Hydrocharitaceae), an aquatic macrophyte native to Southern Africa that has become invasive in several countries worldwide, is a potential target for biological control. Biology studies were conducted on Polypedilum (Pentapedilum) n. sp. near reei Oyewo & Sæther (Diptera: Chironomidae), a midge whose larvae were discovered mining the plant's shoot tips in its native range. Field surveys indicated that the midge occurred only at a small number of sites but attained high densities (up to 370 shoots damaged/m2) that prevented further growth from the shoot tips. A population of the midge was imported into quarantine in Ireland to evaluate its potential as a candidate biological control agent. The adult stage is terrestrial and short-lived (4–5 d), with females depositing one–two egg packets into the water bodies. First-instar larvae fed externally on the stems and leaflets. Later instars fed on the apical meristems and burrowed into the shoot tips, with resultant damage stunting the apical growth. Larvae moved readily between shoots to complete their development and pupated within the tunnels excavated by the late instar larvae. Developmental time to adulthood ranged from 31 to 49 days at 20.7°C and a 15 L:9-D cycle. This is the first time that a chironomid has been imported and successfully cultured for consideration as a classical biological control agent. Several aspects of the midge's biology suggest that host specificity testing is warranted to determine its potential as a biocontrol agent of L. major.  相似文献
