Endomycopsis montevidensis n. sp.

A new species of the genusEndomycopsis is proposed. It was isolated from wast water, at Montevideo-Uruguay.By its morphological and biochemical proprieties it differs from allEndomycopsis previously described.Este trabajo fue desarrollado en el Laboratorio de Micologia de la Facultad de Quimica de Montevideo, Uruguay y en uso de una beca de la Universidad Federal de Pernambuco para perfeccio bamiento en el estudo de las levaduras.     

Human mycoses in Portugal [1960–1973]

A critical survey is made of human mycoses diagnosed in European Portugal and in the Portuguese Overseas Provinces. Dermatophyte infections and pityriasis versicolor are commom in the entire territory. The more frequently isolated dermatophytes in Continental Portugal wereTrichophyton violaceum, Microsporum canis, Trichophyton tonsurans andTrichophyton schoenleinii, in the scalp andTrichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton megninii andEpidermophyton floccosum in the other body sites. In the Overseas Provinces the species found in white people were very much the same, whereas in negroes mainlyMicrosporum audouinii andT. violaceum in Mozambique,M. audouinii in Angola, andTrichophyton soudanense, M. audouinii andT. rubrum in Guinea were identified.In Continental Portugal cases of candidiasis, mycetoma, aspergillosis, sporotrichosis and cryptococcosis were described in patients who had never been outside Europe; and tinea nigra, African histoplasmosis and South-American blastomycosis in individuals who live or lived in India, Africa and Brazil.The first case of North-American blastomycosis was reported in Mozambique.     

Diphosphoglycerate mutase and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate phosphatase activities of red cells: comparative electrophoretic study

Erythrocyte diphosphoglycerate mutase (EC 2.7.5.4.) and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.13.) activities of normal human adults, and DPG mutase deficient subject as well as of several animal species were subjected to electrophoretic study on starch gel. In U.V. light 2,3-diphosphoglycerate phosphatase activity was revealed as a band of fluorescence decrease on a fluorescent background, by the oxydation of NADH, whereas diphosphoglycerate mutase appeared as a fluorescent zone. It was found that the electrophoretic pattern of both DPG mutase and 2,3-DPG phosphatase activities was different from one species to the other, but that, in each species, 2,3-DPG phosphatase activity showed the same electrophoretic pattern as DPG mutase activity.
