Fructose is now such an important component of human diets that increasing attention is being focused on the fructose transporter GLUT5. In this review, we describe the regulation of GLUT5 not only in the intestine and testis, where it was first discovered, but also in the kidney, skeletal muscle, fat tissue, and brain where increasing numbers of cell types have been found to have GLUT5. GLUT5 expression levels and fructose uptake rates are also significantly affected by diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and inflammation and seem to be induced during carcinogenesis, particularly in the mammary glands. We end by highlighting research areas that should yield information needed to better understand the role of GLUT5 during normal development, metabolic disturbances, and cancer. 相似文献

Pupal Period Affects Calling Behavior of the Wheat Moth, Pseudaletia sequax (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

The effects of pupal period and age on calling behavior of virgin females of Pseudaletia sequax were determined. Calling behavior of groups of females of similar age of pupation was observed every 10 min for six calling days. Females were considered calling when they assumed a characteristic position: wings and abdomen elevated, displaying the ovipositor and presumably releasing pheromone. Calling behavior was discontinuous. Females with a shorter pupal period took more time to start calling than females with a longer pupal period and called for a longer period. On the first day of calling, females took more time to initiate calling, on average during the seventh hour of the scotophase, whereas on the second day of calling, most females initiated calling during the fifth hour of the scotophase. On subsequent days of calling, the average time to initiate calling changed to the fourth hour of the scotophase. The mean time of calling per day decreased significantly with the number of days since first calling, and the mean number of calling bouts increased with days since first calling. 相似文献

In this work the antiproliferative activity of goniothalamin (1), both in racemic and in its enantiomeric pure forms, in a solid tumor experimental model using laboratory animals is described. The antiedematogenic activity displayed by racemic 1 in the carrageenan edema model in mice together with the reduction of Ehrlich solid tumor model suggest a relationship between anticancer and antiinflammatory activities with the antiinflammatory activity favoring the antiproliferative activity itself. 相似文献

The reproductive biology of Epinephelus morio (red grouper) and Mycteroperca bonaci (black grouper) were evaluated based on 533 specimens collected from artisanal fisheries landings in the Abrolhos Bank, Brazil, between May 2005 and September 2012. Sex ratio for the black grouper was 1:14 (n = 155 females and 11 males; 26.1–147 cm TL) and 1:10 for the red grouper (n = 334 females and 33 males; 15.0–96.0 cm TL). For both species, highest values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) for females were recorded between July and October, indicating spawning during the austral winter. The length at first maturity (L50) for females was estimated at 62.0 and 47.0 cm TL for the black and red grouper, respectively. Batch fecundity based on TL and TW ranged from 2 to 15.4?106 and 1.5 to 13.7?106 for the black and red grouper, respectively. Interviews with experienced fishers revealed that spawning seasons of both groupers are largely unrecognized. Results demonstrate a positive relationship between GSI peaks, lower temperatures and stronger winds. The information provided herein may help decision-making regarding fisheries management and conservation for E. morio and M. bonaci at various levels of governance in the Abrolhos Bank, the region with the largest and richest coralline reefs in the South Atlantic. 相似文献

We investigated the effect of Helianthus tuberosus agglutinin (HTA) on neutrophil migration in vivo and in vitro. The role of resident cells in this effect was analyzed. Peritonitis was induced by injecting stimuli into rat (150-200 g) peritoneal cavities, and in vitro neutrophil chemotaxis was performed using a Boyden microchamber. HTA (80, 200, or 500 microg/mL per cavity) induced significant in vivo neutrophil migration (p < 0.05); in vitro assays showed that this lectin also induced neutrophil chemotaxis, an effect inhibited by the incubation of lectin associated with alpha-D(+)-mannose, its specific binding sugar. Depletion of the resident-cell population by peritoneal lavage did not alter HTA-induced neutrophil migration (200 microg/mL per cavity). The opposite strategy, increasing peritoneal macrophages by intraperitoneally injecting rats with thioglycollate, did not enhance the neutrophil migration produced by HTA (200 microg/mL per cavity). In addition, injection of supernatant from HTA-stimulated macrophage culture (300 microg/mL) into rat peritoneal cavities did not induce neutrophil migration. However, reduction of the peritoneal mast-cell population potentiated the neutrophil migration (p < 0.05) induced by HTA (200 microg/mL per cavity). Lectin from H. tuberosus has a direct neutrophil chemotatic effect that is modulated by mast cells. 相似文献

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), a tropical pathogen, has re-emerged and has massive outbreaks abruptly all over the world. Containing many dominant epitopes, the envelope E2 protein of CHIKV has been explored for the vaccination or diagnosis. In the present study, the antigenicity of a recombinant expressed intrinsically disorder domain (IUD) of E2 was tested for the detection of the antibody against CHIKV through western blot method. The gene of the IUD of E2 was inserted into 2 different vectors and expressed as recombinant GST-E2 and recombinant MBP-E2 fusion protein, respectively. Two kinds of fusion proteins were tested with 30 CHIKV patient sera and 30 normal sera, respectively. Both proteins were detected by 25 patients sera (83.3%) and 1 normal serum (3.3%). This test showed a relatively high sensitivity and very high specificity of the recombinant E2 proteins to be used as diagnostic antigens against CHIKV infection. 相似文献

Several non-indigenous bivalve species have been colonising aquatic ecosystems worldwide, in some cases with great ecological
and economic impacts. In this paper, we focus on the ecosystem engineering attributes of non-indigenous invasive bivalves
(i.e., the capacities of these organisms to directly or indirectly affect the availability of resources to other species by
physically modifying the environment). By reviewing the ecology of several invasive bivalves we identify a variety of mechanisms
via which they modify, maintain and/or create habitats. Given the usually high densities and broad spatial distributions of
such bivalves, their engineering activities can significantly alter ecosystem structure and functioning (e.g., changes in
sediment chemistry, grain size, and organic matter content via bioturbation, increased light penetration into the water column
due to filter feeding, changes in near bed flows and shear stress due to the presence of shells, provision of colonisable
substrate and refuges by shells). In addition, changes in ecosystem structure and functioning due to engineering by invasive
bivalves often have very large economic impacts. Given the worldwide spread of non-indigenous bivalves and the varied ways
in which they physically modify habitats, their engineering effects should receive more serious consideration in restoration
