Summary The ability of an erpobdellid leech, Erpobdella montezuma, to discriminate between two congeneric amphipod prey (Hyalella montezuma and Hyalella azteca) through mechanoreception was examined. Both E. montezuma and H. montezuma, a pelagic filter feeder, are endemic to the near thermally constant environment of Montezuma Well, Arizona, and form a highly specialized predator-prey relationship. In contrast, H. azteca, a benthic detritivore, is widely distributed throughout North America. Erpobdella montezuma was highly responsive to the prey signals of the endemic H. montezuma and showed only a limited response to H. azteca. An inverse relationship occurred between the frequency of attack and size of the leech. The abilities of Erpobdella punctata and Nephelopsis obscura, neither found in Montezuma Well, to detect the signals of both amphipod prey were also examined. These species with non-specialized diets showed a low response to the signals of both prey species. This study demonstrates that very close predator-prey relationships can develop over evolutionary time in isolated aquatic systems through the use of mechanoreception. 相似文献

A glutathione transferase from human mononuclear leukocytes with a high activity towardtrans-stilbene oxide (GT-tSBO) has been studied in liver and blood from fetus and adults and in blood from neonates. Using starch gel electrophoresis, different phenotypes of GST1 have been determined, GST1 0, GST1 1, and GST1 2. As judged from activity measurements and the fact that only those individuals who express the null allele of GST1, the GST1 0, which has a low activity towardtrans-stilbene oxide, it is concluded that the hepatic transferase GST1 is identical to GT-tSBO, as well as to hepatic transferase μ. In addition, it has been shown that the different genotypes of GST1 1 (GST1 1-1, GST1 1-0) and GST1 2 (GST1 2-2, GST1 2-0) can be separated by measuring the GT-tSBO activity in whole blood from the same individual. It is also demonstrated that GT-tSBO activity is much lower in fetal liver, approximately 10 times, compared with adult liver, while this activity seems to be unchanged in the blood from fetus and adults, as well as in neonates. 相似文献

Murine squamous carcinoma cells (KLN205) grown in a medium supplemented with the retinoid, 13-cis retinoic acid (RA), had dose-dependent, selective increases in the expression of certain lectin receptors, which correlated with a dramatic decrease in the ability to form pulmonary colonies (P ?.0003) (Couch MJ, Pauli BU, Weinstein RS, Coon JS: JNCI, 78:971 ?977, 1987). These findings suggest a possible relationship between the RA-induced glycoconjugate alterations and the decreased experimental metastatic behavior. We further define the mechanism of RA's action. The finding that RA treatment (5 × 10?6 M, 5 × 10?7 M) did not perturb the cell cycle of KLN205 cells provides further proof that the decreased metastatic behavior is not attributable to any inhibition in the rate of growth or to alterations in the cell cycle. Furthermore, since stable subpopulations with variable lectin binding could not be detected, the mechanism of RA's action does not appear to be due to selection of variant tumor-cell subpopulations. Finally, in a scries of experiments designed to determine the reversibility of the RA treatment, the RA-induced decrease in metastatic behavior reverted back to a more metastatic state in the same time frame (3 days) as the reversion of the RA-induced changes in cell-surface glycoconjugate expression. This reversion provides further evidence for a close relationship between the RA-induced modulation of tumor cell-surface glycoconjugate expression and the decreased metastatic behavior; it suggests that transient, reversible modulation of the tumor cell surface may play a role in determining metastatic behavior. 相似文献

Feeding on Chironomus riparius, Glyptotendipes paripes (Chironomidae). and Daphnia magna by the predatory freshwater leech, Nephelopsis obscura , was investigated in the laboratory and predictive models developed to estimate prey capture rate in the field. Experimental arena (container) size significantly affected predation rates when arena diameter was less than twice the total body length of the predator. An antigen making a major contribution to the immune response to Drosophila melanogaster chromatin resides primarily on a nonhistone charge-class family of proteins of Mr 74,000. Immunofluorescence detects this antigen at interbands, puffs and diffuse bands of D. melanogaster salivary chromosomes isolated without exposure to acid fixatives, and on nucleoplasmic ribonucleoprotein droplets. In the electron microscope, gold labelling reveals the binding of monoclonal antibodies specific for the antigen at chromosomal loci generally bearing putative ribonucleoprotein (RNP) particles. A nonintrusive auxonometric system, based on the DARWIN image processor (Telewski et al. 1983 Plant Physiol 72: 177-181), is described and demonstrated in the analysis of gravitropism and thigmomorphogenesis in corn seedlings (Zea mays). Using this system, growth and bending of regularly shaped plants or organs can be quickly and accurately measured without, in any way, interfering with the plant. Furthermore, the growth and bending curves are automatically plotted. Thigmomorphogenesis in the aerial part of corn seedlings involves growth promotion at a low force load and growth retardation at higher force loads. The time courses of the two kinds of response are somewhat different, with retardation occurring immeditely after mechanical perturbation and growth promotion taking somewhat longer to begin. Gravitropic experiments show that when dark-grown corn seedlings are placed on their side in the light, the resulting curvature is due to two consecutive morphological mechanisms. In the first instance, lasting for about 15 minutes, the elongation of the bottom edge of the plant accelerates, while the elongation of the top edge remains constant. After that, for the next 1.75 hours, the elongation of the top edge decelerates and stops while that of the bottom edge remains constant at the increased rate for most of the period. The measurements taken from both experiments at relatively high resolution (0.08-0.1 millimeter) show that the growth curves are not smooth but show many small irregularities which may or may not involve micronutations. 相似文献

Meloidogyne incognita (Mi) and Rotylenchulus reniformis (Rr) interactions on sweet potato were studied in naturally and artificially infested field plots for 3 years. In a naturally infested field, early season counts of Mi or Rr were positively correlated with later counts of the same nematode, but negative correlations were found between early Mi and subsequent Rr, and early Rr and subsequent Mi counts. In field plots fumigated with methyl bromide and then infested with low levels of Rr, Mi, and Rr + Mi, final population densities of Mi juveniles were reduced by Rr, but Rr was not affected by Mi. In field plots with a high natural population density of Rr, artificial infestation with high levels of Mi in both fumigated and nonfumigated treatments inhibited Rr, while the final Mi juvenile population density was not affected. Results indicate that a competitive interaction exists with each species capable of inhibiting the other and becoming the dominant population. The nematodes had no apparent effect on yield at the inoculum densities used, either alone or mixed. Both nematodes increased cracking of sweet potatoes, but mixed populations did not differ in incidence of cracking from either Rr or Mi alone. 相似文献
